They used terrorism like “a wonderful invisible enemy” to “allege” terrorist connections any country they wanted to attack. They played our post-9/11 patriotism like a fine violin and manipulated it into such an overwhelming degree of NATIONALISM that all we wanted to do was INVADE – INVADE – INVADE at the slightest wave of their hand. Truly, to believe that our armies cannot be beaten and that we can do no wrong is a dangerous path to tread in a world so utterly chockfull of AAMDs (Arsenals of ABSOLUTE Mass Destruction). It is as if we’ve all been taken prisoner on some underlying crusade of theirs. …a crusade just as likely to end with us holding hands with loved ones - begging for a chance to have done more - as the bombs fall, as it is with the election of someone who could undue this catastrophe. It’s an utter paradox that the land of the free beginning to act with the tyranny and imperialism of the worst nations in history. Secret prisons? Torture? The invasion of sovereign countries? The postponement of elections? War criminals wrapping themselves in our flag daring us to challenge their patriotism? I'd personally rather live in Russia than endure the slow, grueling death this democracy is undergoing.

Special Comment on Rudy Giuliani

I love it when Keith gets mad. As he so eloquently put it, ENOUGH already with the threats and terrorizing statements this Republican machine makes with impunity. Now Rudy joins the ranks with Karl, Tom, Dick, George, etc. asserting that electing a Democrat as president will bring death and distruction to us all. Notwithstanding a two-thirds disapproval rating, I guess the plan is to continue to depend upon the perception that most Americans are feeble-minded. Otherwise, why do they continue on this course of blackmail? Vote Republican, or you will be targeted. "We fight them over there, so we don't have to fight them here." It is a strategy of distraction, so we won't recognize the terroritists have been here, and in the White House since 2000. Now you need to address some of your colleagues on MSNBC such as, Tucker Carlson. While I love your show, MSNBC seems to allow Enquiry type media to hit their airwaves. I quote......... What about the nutjob called Dennis Kucinich impeaching VP Dick Cheney? He told Congress he doesn't stand alone, be he was there surrounded by a microphones alone.... end quote. by Tucker Carlson. However, what Mr. Carlson did not continue to say, which was very relevant to him calling Senator Kucinich a nutjob, was Senator Kucinich made that response of not standing alone based on a question from a fellow Senator asking him it appeared he stood alone. The Senator stated, and I quote..... I do not stand alone, I stand with millions of my fellow Americans.... end quote. Tucker, he does!!!!!!!!!!

Special Comment on Rudy Giuliani

I might also add, Tucker Carlson had a Republican and a Democrat on his show talking about the upcoming presidential elections, and how Senator Barack Obama would attempt to sway the Black vote. He told the two how Jesse Jackson, when he was running for president said, vote for me because I'm black. The Democrat on the show said, I never heard Jesse say that. Tucker's response was, yeah, but we all know what he was saying. Well, Tucker your president said he had no clue that the yellow cake letter was a forged document, why don't you come out and say, yeah, we all know he knew it was forged! After all, the CIA told him months before he claimed it! Why only chide a republican for using fear? The problem is that Rudy's speech is no different than what speaker-want-a-be Pelosi's in the 2006 campaign....

"Five years after 9/11, we still do not have 100 percent screening at our ports, we still do not have a mandate for chemical and nuclear plants to safeguard them, we still have not brought anywhere near what we need to of fissile material that poses the biggest danger to the safety of the American people. Our ports are not secure, our borders are not secure, and our country is at risk. We could be safer."

Nancy Pelosi, "Five Years After 9/11, We Are Not As Safe As We Should Be"
9/6/06

Fear is used by both sides and yet Mr. Olbermann only gets angry at the right. Why? Well, I have my opinion but I know if I state it this will have no chance of being posted, so I'll skip it. However, for Mr. Olbermann to assert that democrats do not use fear to motivate support is an error at best.....a lie at worst.

Special Comment on Rudy Giuliani

KO, you are a true force in the industry of of journalism and what fair and accurate reporting is. This, by far, was your best "special comment" on a well known public figure going sour. After 911, everyone was looking for a hero, Rudy fell into the postion all too graciously and became the poster boy for good deed doer's after that abismal day took place. If you look at most of his photo ops, he is smiling, probably knowing he would some day use that tragedy to his advantage. Well he did. Now, he has the gaul to say that if you vote the Democratic Way, going down that path will be voting for death. Has he no clue about a democracy and what it is all about. Who could trust a man that would ridicule, a now stronger party than ever and try to take away out God given rights as Americans and try to decide who shall run the country. Did he sit down with his wife and ask her"honey, what cruel and dispiscable comment can I make to the American public right after what happened in Virginia? How can I make people feel even worse than ever and what else can I say to sound like Jim Jones. Keith, I am glad you got so pissed and I hope right afterwards, you had a stiff drink. Bravo! Not really. They might give you a spot of land in Siberia and I can assure you it is much colder there then in PA. Besides, this is still the greatest country in the world. Although at times a nice isolated south pacific island not yet ruined by man sounds nice. Any time you have a collection of people within boundaries called a country or nation you are going to have ups and downs. But the American people have done pretty darn good. And when and if necessary in the event any persons or other types of disasters threaten us the American people will come together to meet those challenges. Japan learned that in WWII. We really are a sleeping giant that is capable of the greatest of of accomplishments. Unfortunately, the opportunity was missed by this administration that could have bolstered our confidence, love, defense and promotion of this country tenfold compared to the frustration and anger we see today. I cannot believe what a fool Bush was and this administration in blowing this opportunity. Right after 911 all the American people were one, were willing and able to throw all differences aside to make this country even greater than what it was, and is. But the opportunity was wasted. We were led down a path that destroyed confidence in the greatness of this country both at home and abroad rather than validating and increasing that greatness. And wasting this opportunity is perhaps the worse crime of this administration. So, we have always known that the American people are up to any task, and that we can meet future challenges together as a nation where few if any can compete. We just to have to begin relying more on ourselves then on our elected officials. Ours is a desire to achieve greatness collectively. Theirs is a desire to achieve greatness personally. The two do not mix.

Special Comment on Rudy Giuliani

This was one of the best Commentaries Keith has done. Thank you for your analysis of the Rudolph Giuliani record and your principaled attack on his performance based on substance, not his glaring personal flaws. Like Wayne Barrett's, your critique is carefully reasoned and well-documented.

The good news is that Giuliani is his own myth-making manipulator. (Fortunately, his ego and temperament are too large to let any of the professional handlers shape his message). After all, when his term as mayor was over, Rudy literally stole his public archive so he could re-write history.

This death-wish control freak will implode, just like 7 World Trade Center, where he brilliantly built his emergency bunker in the sky--setting up the perverted image of a squint-eyed Giuliani leading his people out of the ashes of 9-11--or so the legend goes.

His crime statistics in NYC are just as much a distortion of the facts. But that's another discussion and further proof that self-promotion at any cost and dishonesty have become the rule in politics.

Keep telling the truth, Keith. Would like to thank MSNBC for allowing you the freedom to present your views - I don't think many news channels would allow their anchors to do so. I am very tired of the scare tactic being used by both the administration and some of the people who wish to replace them. ENOUGH.
The politicians were surprised last year when we voted, they may be even more surprised in '08 when more of us go to the poles and vote. Most of the elected officials think we, the people, are stupid and will continue to follow party lines like sheep. They might just get a real shock with what we do the next time we vote. When we get together, when we get mad, when we have had enough of "SSDD" we will put them out of office and take our chances with the new, and untainted new people.

Special Comment on Rudy Giuliani

Great comment,I wish the rest of the American people would wake up and pay attention. We have been sedated with bread and circuses.Keith should write speeches for the next Democratic convention. We are no safer now than we were before 9/11,we are likely worse off.We have a long way to go to make this country safe and we are wasting our reasources in a pointless war.LOVE THE SHOW AND KEEP IT UP.

Special Comment on Rudy Giuliani

Ok Chris, a one way ticket to the far reaches of Siberia land. He was fighting the Russians (can't remember if the reds or whites) while at the same time the Russians were our allies in the war against Germany. Now is this not a crazy world. It musta been all those anthrax letters and maybe the GOP media massages?
What Guiliani and the GOP have been doing is actually an old nazi trick...."Of course the people don't want war..but it's the leaders who determine the policies and it's easy to drag the people along. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pascifists as unpatriotic and leaving the country open to danger" Hermann Goering-Nuremburg trials yep our GOP are the fear and terror mongers...much more concerned about power than the integrity or citizens of this nation.
Notable also that the GOP focused on Clintons sex life while we were being plotted against and 9/11 happened on BUSH and THE GOP watch.

I applaud all of your very eloquent and passionate Special Comment segments. Fear has been a part of our political landscape for far too long. The rhetoric espoused by those who would exploit and wield fear as a weapon, must be met by those patriotic enough to dissent. If the veil of fear in this country is to be lifted from our collective eyes, it will only be from the perspective of the truth, from those brave enough to speak it.

Special Comment on Rudy Giuliani

I listened to Mr Olbermann's Special Comment last night and have re-read the transcript and still find it amazing that someone such as Mr. Olbermann does not realize that over-the-top political rhetoric has been taking place in America for over one hundred years. One glaring example was the famous ad against Goldwater (featuring the little girl and the mushroom cloud). If that wasn't offensive and over-the-top, I don't know what is.

Mr. Olbermann, please do not let your politics and personal feelings get in the way of good reporting. Everyone is entitled to their scathing attacks, but please remember this political hyperbole has gone on before us and will continue long after we are gone. Mr. Giuliani was using a tried and true political tactic and the voters of the United States will speak.

Late yesterday afternoon the Democratic National Committee sent an email bearing the signature of chairman Howard Dean (reproduced at Little Green Footballs), in which he misquotes Giuliani outright:

Rudy Giuliani should be ashamed.

The former New York City Mayor is politicizing September 11th in his 2008 presidential bid. Here's what he said at a recent campaign stop in New Hampshire:

"If a Democrat is elected president in 2008, America will be at risk for another terrorist attack on the scale of Sept. 11, 2001... Never ever again will this country ever be on defense waiting for (terrorists) to attack us if I have anything to say about it. And make no mistake, the Democrats want to put us back on defense!"

I won't let this wannabe Republican nominee get away with remarks like these.

In fact, the first sentence in the Giuliani "quote" was not something Giuliani said but something Roger Simon of The Politico wrote.

I have stated and written multiple times that his insistence on putting the “Command & Control” center inside the World Trade Center, after the attack of 1993, was not only self-serving, it was dangerous and asinine. He was told repeatedly advised by counter-terrorism experts that the results of such a decision could be catastrophic, and they were!! Also, the real reason why he was seemingly everywhere and at the same time at the “center of attention” on the tragic day of September 11, 2001, was BECAUSE he irresponsibly advocated for, and insisted upon the Command & Control Center being located inside the World Trade Center. This man is not only a self-absorbed moron; his irresponsible decision resulted in chaotic emergency communications, in addition to communication failures on that tragic day. This ultimately led to more deaths. This man was a “marginal” mayor at best, and that’s being kind. However, after the stunts he pulled both prior to the attacks and after, he is an utter disgrace. When I hear the words “America’s Mayor” associated with his name, I literally want to vomit. Nothing could be further from the truth. Thanks again Keith, for not only exposing and confirming what I have “attempted” to tell so many “loyal Giuliani’s” for so long to no avail, in addition to revealing the jerk’s SOILED laundry list of despicable words, in conjunction with his utterly despicable fear mongering attempts. In addition, great job on enlightening the American public of his utter incompetence. K – U – D – O – S to you sir!!

Make it a full, “seamless” transition to a major Russian city like MOSCOW, say, and I’m there! I have a funny feeling there’ll be more than a few “political refugees” hot on my trail. Russia may not be the ideal or even the preferred place for such scientific, intellectual, and political refugees fleeing “A-M-E-R-I-C-A” but I would choose it foremost to make the point. …our biggest former adversary -- the past embodiment of all that we are now becoming -- who are now doing better than we are. Both of our democracies are shrinking, but one is shrinking to protect the sovereignty of its people, while the other is being drained away by neocons who only want ABSOLUTE POWER for themselves. How dare people like the Secretary of State “brush off” a congressional subpoena! How dare the Attorney General (the top LEGAL person in the country) politely say he doesn’t remember SEVENTY ONE TIMES! How dare the Democrats pull the wording from their new bill expressly prohibiting an attack on IRAN as if that was part of the original war authorization! Trust me, you can keep this little dreamland, warmongering, self-righteous system that once really was worth fighting for. To be a part of TYRANY as it stands now is not right and I’ll gladly take my first TRUE opportunity to abandon this miserable, self-consuming sinking ship! Just remember as Hillary or Rudy go off on yet another crusade to invade IRAN at the behest of the Israeli lobby that they neither have been suffering from a 15-year arms embargo, nor have any internal divisions like Iraq had. If you are so gullable that "W" could fool you, how can I trust you engaging all of the real evil in the world. Did you not even look at the intelligence report ? Maybe you just didn't understand it ? Maybe you just didn't care. Or maybe, just maybe, you can't take responsibility for your vote. It was politically ok then, not so cool being a lib now. Any way you slice it , all of those who voted for the war under the same pretenses are guilty

Special Comment on Rudy Giuliani

Elaine H. He truly honored the memory of Murrow with his sign off last night.
I find it interesting that the posts disagreeing with Keith have a common thread of "we aren't the only ones who do that". As if that makes fear mongering acceptable. You go ahead and live your sheltered life, afraid of the world that is around you. Afraid of invisible enemies, bad language, people's sexuality, and the boogie man. Afraid that what you want to believe just might not be true, and may not be what I choose to believe. You go ahead and live that life, but don't for a moment assume that just because "it has always been that way", means that I, or Keith or anyone else who agrees with us has to just accept it (all due respect to Mr. Olbermann for lumping him into a sentence with me as if we are aquainted in any way, but you get the point). A change is needed in the political spectrum of this country, and I refuse to let the 30% of this country who support more of the same from a failed administration be the reason it can't happen. Thank you Keith and everyone else writing away every day for "Countdown". Your show actually makes it fun to be this pissed off!

Special Comment on Rudy Giuliani

Loved this comment re Giuliani. Fear qua terror is nothing more than a weapon used by those seeking to have or maintain power to destroy that which they themselves fear: free will. One need not look further than a history book to see the result of fearmongering. For example, Napoleon, Hitler, Lenin, Stalin, Henry VIII, George III, and countless others all failed in the end. Why? Free will and liberty trumps fear. Therefore, those of us liberty loving individuals (who outnumber fearmongers) must stand up once again like our ancestors and proclaim "WE FEAR NOT!"

Special Comment on Rudy Giuliani

Wow Chris: Hey, if you want me to fund your travels and find you a job and a place to live and all that don't be so mad at me. The reality is, Republicans may sort of support him, but he will need the support of moderate Democrats to win the Presidency. This will drive those moderates away. Many Democrats have listened to this junk now for almost thirty years and it is loosing its punch. People look at the number of attacks under Clinton and then under Bush and wonder why Bush has seen more attacks world wide than Clinton, if Clinton was suppose to be so bad for national security. Having more bombs, guns, soldiers and tanks does not make one safe. Clinton invested in police, boarder patrol and coast guard. He had the FBI cooperate with Europol and Interpol. This made it hard for the terrorists to opperate. Bush has taken from police and the related services in order to bolster an over bloated and ineffective military, and that was even before 11 September. Guiliani made a mistake by pushing away Democrats. He may find himself struggling down the road.

Special Comment on Rudy Giuliani

Keith, Absolutely fantastic! Maybe the votes were there because it is hard to imagine an administration that incompetent and immoral.

What did Bush get right about Iraq except that Saddam was a piece of crap? NOthing.

And why has Bin Laden had a pass for the last three years?

And as far as Giuliani -- He chose NOT to perosnally defend the US but rather to whoremonger in office and permit sadistic rapes and killings by the NYPD under his authority.

I have to ask what we can believe from the CIC right now -- can we believe his intel? No. Can we believe the stories about combat deaths and injuries? No. Can we believe that he did not obstruct justice and cause attorneys like Alberto Gonzalez and Monica Goodling to commit unethical acts? NO. Did Bush perform any ordered duty for the last 17 months of his commitment? -- The unit payroll and commander say No.

Special Comment on Rudy Giuliani

Thank you for another rant. I have NEVER stated I want my ex-husband at The Hague, nor have I called him a moron, or a war criminal. Quite the opposite, while he was filled with hatred and contempt for anyone not Arab, he was/is very intelligent and did very well in school. Once again, you are distorting the facts Larry, and interjecting lies. It is your hero George w. Bush who I have called these names, which are ever so deserving. I have many more names for the war criminal, moron, liar, and murderer, in addition to wanting him transported to The Hague; however, I cannot use that language here. Please get your facts straight Larry, as you know nothing about me, my marriage, or my multiple male friends. I have many male friends, and always have since I was a young girl. I love sports and I always related to men well. So stop the asinine assumptions simply because I made a horrible mistake in entering into an inter-cultural marriage with a man who TRULY hated everyone except Arabs, including Americans. He is a bigoted, hate-filled man, who advocated the assignations of multiple world leaders, and I simply could not stay in a marriage with anyone who thinks as he did/still does.

Special Comment on Rudy Giuliani

Larry I don't even think you live in Charleston,SC.Dave Nash, Glen Ellyn, IL.But both of you guys are so fond of pulling the past out of you ass.what the hell does that mean anyway? Your guys have really manged to botch this: Iran,Pakistan very scary,North Korea,South Africa's Nukes,China, the Russian aren't exactly happy with us right now new arms race.... and some how you guys have the audacity to tell us about foreign policy. My foreign policy is I try to learn to say I love you in all the different languages.Try it some time.

Special Comment on Rudy Giuliani

Keith, BRAVO & THANK YOU! I almost got up from my chair last night and gave you a standing ovation regarding what you said about Mr. Guiliani. I'm not surprised that a person of his caliber would stoop to this level, regardless if this tactic has been used in previous elections. Someone please tell Dave from my home state of Illinois to SHUT UP, he's an idiot! Why are so many republicans "HELL BENT ON WAR", FEAR, DESTRUCTION and last but not least "I GOT MINE, YOU GET YOURS" mentality? Also, I have to agree with the comments from Raven of Moriches New York. She's 100% correct on Chris Matthews and Guiliani. I asked Mr. Matthews the following question and he never had the balls to answer. He must be to busy sucking up to his Republican cronies to touch upon my comment. I asked Chris "Can you please explain to me why we would want another Commander and Chief running this country without a shred of foreign policy experience?

We unfortunately have a former Governor in this
position, also without any foreign policy experience
and look at the mess he’s made of this country
listening to advice from people like Karl Rove. Now
the GOP want’s to take a former Mayor and repeat the
same mistakes all over again, I don’t understand this
idea." If I were a Republican this is an election year that I would want a "NONE OF THE ABOVE" box put on my ballot.

Special Comment on Rudy Giuliani

I've read too many of these messages. Most are kiss-ups and I don't kiss anyone's butt, especially Olbermann's. Suffice to say that, generally speaking, ANY Republican in the White house is better than ANY Democrat. Liberalism is the main problem, Not Giuliani. And while some Democrats lean a little bit Republican, ALL liberals are Democrats. There is a high price to be paid for America's freedom and it should be paid at any cost. If a catastrophe happens I need someone in the White House who will face the enemy. I see the Democrats running the other way. Hillary sees herself, unfortunately, as the "chosen one." If she was totally blind to Monica and "Bill being Bill," then how could she be awake enough to run a country? She obviously can be "taken." Barack Obama went on Imus'
show and then stabbed him in the back. He follows Sharpton and anything he says. He is in NO POSITION to lead this country. When the world found out that Edwards pays $400 for a haircut "trim" and spends too much time primping in front of a mirror, it was already over for him. But who knows, maybe the Dems will get lucky and win. Does anyone really think the terrorists will back off if a Democrat becomes president? Olbermann will choke on this but There have been no terrorists strikes on American soil since 9/11 and the arrival of the Patriot Act and other Home Security policies, which the Dems want to revoke. America is also divided by too many special interest groups and a liberal media, which, in today's world, seems to only feel empathy for the enemy, even though they are out to kill us. Sooner or later we will pull out of Iraq and the chaos will instantly begin. I only hope there will be someone in the White House that CAN and WILL handle the situation.

Special Comment on Rudy Giuliani

Paul Gardner --

Were the anthrax attacks and deaths a freakin' mass hallucination? WMD have been on the white supremacist agenda for some time. Are you serioulsy saying that ELF, ALF, Army of God, etc. have been doing nothing for six years?

Only two Republicans running who aren't chickenhawk cowards. Only two who considered Communism and narco-terrorists a threat worthy of THEIR time. Leadership is by example and the Republican example is five deferments and a BS medical condition when they can be bothered to show up for duty at all.

I do NOT want a CIC who bicycled through France or was a phony cripple rather than in boot camp.
