I have to agree with Keith. The Democratic party made a big noise about Americans speaking loud and clear when they won the majority of seats in Congress. And what do they do? Blink and George jumps all over it. At what cost is this latest "compromise"? How many more deaths? How many more lives, soldiers and civilians? At what price--not just dollars and cents? We need to get out and get out now, not in September, not at the end of the year, not some time in the future. I support our military men and women, but I can not support a war that has no plan for victory overall much less a win on a small scale. Yes, things have turned around in some areas but the wins are minute compared to the losses repeatedly occurring. Enough is enough and if the Democrats aren't getting it then we need to find some representatives who do.

A compromise suggests the democrates got something in return. This is not a compromise it is a total abdication of thier responsibility. In the past I have said that this war is being fought not in the streets of Baghdad, but in the jungles of Vietnam, and I am right. The Democrats had no choice in this. We are dealing with a Party who will use any attempt to cut off funding for our troops to energize their base. They will harken their followers back to the time of the Hippies, and the anti-War protests. Heaven forbid we even think about simply cutting off the funding. Nothing short of impeaching this President, which also does not have the votes, will end this war. If the Dems stop the funding, the Department of Defense will use every scrap of money they can in order to keep it going. Secretary Gates will go without a salary if necessary. The President will hand over every last scrap of spare change they can find in between the sofa cushons in order to keep it going. All the while, they will blame every single death on the Democrats not funding their petty little vendetta. Like it or not, they will use this to destroy the Democrats. HOWEVER, by October, the Democrats will have the upper hand. Too many Republicans are vulnerable to their next election bid. They'll be scared that standing with Bush will end their careers. In fact, the Republicans will, by then, be in the ultimate political Catch-22. If they support the War, they energize the Democrats in their states to oust them. If they vote against the War, they will loose the support of a party which now equates ending the War with defeat. I realize my ideas won't be popular, but...The Dems did make a lot of noise after the election without having the votes to back up the noise...Did I miss something after the 2006 election when the Dems had only something like a 232-201 majority in the House, far from the 287 votes needed to override a King George veto...and the Dems also had a slim 50 seats plus one independent Democrat who votes Republican to 49 majority...far from the 66 votes needed to override the King's veto...I was saying back in December 2006 the Dems don't have the juice or power to get the Republicans to break away from the King and influence the war policy and funding...the King is to stubborn to change his mind even when something like 70% of Americans want to start bringing our troops home...Did anyone really think the Dems would get Bush to sign a bill with timelines and withdrawal dates or have his fellow Republicans jump ship and override the King's veto?...the Republicans are like lemming heading to the ocean in mass...all the Dems could do is keep sending the same bill to the King until the funding for the troops was a real issue and try to blame Bush for vetoing all the bills with all the money he requested and hope more people blame the King and the Republicans who continue to support him instead of blaming the Dems...the Dems had two choices in my mind: the Dems could simply send the King a bill with no withdrawal dates or even benchmarks with teeth, basically give the King what the King wants...or keep sending the King bills he would only veto and the Dems won't have the votes to override the King and either way we all lose, especially the troops, since the troops would be underfunded eventually while still fighting...are we are stuck with a blame game which is now in the Dems court...when did the Dems ever have the power to end the war without the help of the Republicans? Again, what did I miss?...and the Republicans, probably lead by Doctors Evil, Chaney and Rove, kept the lemming Republicans in line...did anyone really think the Dems could end the war themselves without having the votes in the Senate or the House to take on the King...I never thought the Dems had a chance to make any noise...if anything, the Dems didn't want to risk being the ones who cut off funding for the troops...and how many of us want the troops not funded while they are still fighting the civil war in Iraq...What options did the Dems really have? Keep rolling the rock up the hill and have it fall back down on them? How long could they really do that? Edwards can say keep sending the King the same bill but he doesn't have to run for re-election in the House or Senate...he may not even get the Democratic nomination...Trust me, I have lost faith in the two party system...neither party is doing the will of the people...only maneuvring for position in the 2008 election...which is the real crime....worrying about re-elections and positioning for the 2008 presidential election, instead of listening to the majority of the American people...the Dems should take their share of the blame...the King called their bluff...but what does the King have to lose? He is already naked...the lemmings are too afraid to hold the King accountable...and the Dems never had the power to influence policy...the Dems keep rolling the rock up the hill and the rock keeps falling on them, on the American people, the troops, and the two party system...and now the King trots out the old war horse that al Qaeada in Iraq wants to kill Americans...information from 2005 he suddenly declassifies to give a commencement speech...and why are we suppose to believe the King now after all his lies...shocking that al Qaeda wants its followers to kill Americans...all the King has is the fear card...and his lies...and the Dems lack of votes..

Sigh...Let me try this again. I feel like most Americans have no clue how our political system works, which is why Bush got away with murder (figuratively). I would like to begin by answering the question Mr. Olbermann asked at the end of his commentary tonight: "Who among us will stop this war?" The answer, sir, is "We will. If this war is going to end any time before - roughly - early 2009, it will be the citizens of this nation who will end this war." I'm truly sorry so many people are shocked and outraged by the caving of the Democrats on war funding, but it really should come as no surprise. The sad fact of the matter, cynical as it may sound, is that from a political point of view it serves the interests of both parties to keep this war going at least until the 2008 elections are over. Faced with the choice of doing the right thing or the politically profitable thing, the Democrats predictably chose the option which their careers of "service" in Washington for at least the past fifty years have conditioned them to do. I've been trying to tell people this for quite a while. In fact, in the days before the mid term elections last year, while so many of my friends in San Diego were getting ready to celebrate the coming changing of the guard in Congress, I was taking the first steps on a journey that will eventually bring me to Washington, D.C., carrying a petition to Congress to officially end the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and restore the balance of powers between the Legislative and Executive branches of our government. Today, I am in eastern Missouri - over 2100 miles into my walk - and the Democrats have only done what I expected they would do. If you're interested, I'm calling my effort the Walk to End the Wars. I am a Vietnam-era vet, a former United Methodist pastor and a grandfather. I have a website - www.wtetw.com - that outlines my petition, gives a detailed description of my route, and offers a running chronicle of my experiences and thoughts along the way. My primary objective in walking is to try to get as many people as possible to start thinking once again - about the consequences of our actions and about what kind of world we are building for our grandchildren. Okay, time for a little reality check here: It may suit the hard-core left (not to mention John Edwards, who is seriously auditioning for the George McGovern role in this movie -- Rudy's shooting for the Nixon part) to think of the Congress sending the same bill -- with the same timelines, and the same deadlines -- back to the WH over and over and over again until Dubya falls to his knees and screams, "NO MORE! I'LL SIGN! I'LL SIGN! I BEEN A BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAD BOY!" Well, he has and that's apparent, and that's all there is to say about that. Here's the thing, though, folks: THE VOTES WERE NOT THERE! In order to knock a veto out of the park, you need 60 senators, and there just were not enough GOPhers who were willing to climb that fence, even with _weak_ benchmarks Dubya could have ignored. And why wouldn't they do the right thing, when it seems like everyone and his dog Ralph agrees this war is going badly, will not get better any time soon, and Fort Dix proved the spider-web theory of maintaining the war is downright WRONG?! Because that 28% Dubya's hanging on to adds up to 75% of GOPher voters. And the senators (particularly vulnerable ones like Snowe and Smith) want to keep their jobs. Period. To quote Judd Nelson in _The Breakfast Club_, "Demented and sad, but social!" Plus is there anyone -- ANYONE -- who seriously thinks this President is going to start recognizing reality this far in? This idiot actually got up on his hind legs and said the '06 vote was a call for change -- HIS kind of change, otherwise known as The Surge (or "Surge 1.0", if today's news is right)! If he were any more in denial, we'd have to bury him in a sarcophagus! It has nothing to do with right and wrong any more, anyway. It's now a question of Dubya having his way for so long, that he's going to dig in his heels, throw his blocks, and squall like a two-year old if he doesn't get his own way EVERY SINGLE TIME... you know, the way the Congress did for the last four years? Were we right on the facts? Yes. Were we right on the law? You bet. But unless we came up with something dead solid veto-proof, that Bush would have been impeached the moment he pulled out a signing statement, we were going to lose this one. So prey for a smoking gun with the attorneys or the wire-tapping program, people, because that's the only way we're going to nail this sociopathic putz. A simple majority just puts us in charge of the Congress. It does _not_ put us _In Charge_. And more is the pity.

The Dems may be regrouping as you say, but they show no sense of urgency when it comes to saving American lives. How many more will be kidnapped, tortured, killed and found floating in a river with a bullet hole in their head, or killed by car bombs they cannot defend themslve against. Maybe you are willing to wait for the Dems to regroup until the next round. But how many more young people do we sacrafice in the interim. No, this may not be the end of the debate, but I don't recall the American people voting in the last election for a debate. They voted in the last election to get the troops out of harms way in Iraq now. Not in the f------ latter part of 2007 or in the early part of 2008, but NOW. The debate was over a long time ago and the American people were supposed to have won the debate and the American people said "get out" The Dems seem to have failed to remember that the debate podiums were removed, the curtains drawn and the lights turned out in the last election. And crazy town: Who cares who ends up owning this war. To back off like the Dems have as a strategy to give full ownership to Bush may hurt the republicans, but what of the troops dying while the Dems make sure this chaotic occupation s cemented to GW's rear. No political strategy is worth one more American life. You guys don't get it. Each time I see Bush's or Cheney's smirk I want to wipe it off their faces. Now each time I see Pelosi's or Reid's smile in a news conference I want to wipe it off their faces. What the HELL is it with the smirks and smiles. The American peeople are angry. That group of folks shopping at the local market during the day and who plant bombs at night. Who do they side with. The Sunni who were in power under Saddam or the Shiite under the current corrupt government. Or the Kurds who can't stand or trust the other two partys and may themselves soon be into it with Turkey. Are you willing to tell the parents of that tortured and murdered trooper recently found in the river with a bullet hole in his head we're sorry but we needed to debate this further and regroup or that our strategy is to make sure Bush owns this occupation. Thomas Rogers: The show you were referring to was the X-Files spin-off "The Lone Gunmen", and that very prescient episode was the series pilot. I have my own copy. If anyone remembers this show or this episode, to summarize, a rogue element within the US Air Force hijacked a civilian jet by remote control and were planning on ramming it into the World Trade Center so they could begin a campaign of war against the enemies/patsies who would be blamed for it. They were thwarted at the last minute by the Lone Gunmen. Art imitating life, indeed. Required viewing if you are a 9-11 truther. Or not. I have 2 sons of draft age. I have friends with children in Iraq. I remember my high school years, as the Vietnam War was raging. I knew it was a foolish war, yet boys were being killed daily their - and I was afraid, afraid i would have to go. I was a senior in High School when the draft was stopped. I missed having to make any decision about serving in a War that was Wrong. It appears that America has learned nothing. Absolutely nothing. We need a leader. He has argued for terrorism; established what amounts to gulags and secret prisons; spied on his own people without going through the well-established legal procedures to get permission to do so; effectively set aside habeus corpus; engaged in illegal pre-emptive war; presided over a disastrous fiscal policy that will leave our children with a debt that can never be repaid; allowed an American city to drown and then gave only lip service to rebuilding it; allowed the New Orleans levees to remain at Cat Three preparedness rather than insisting that the be rebuilt to withstand a Cat 5 storm; and presided over the politicization of nearly every governmental function, including the hiring of career prosecutors. I cannot understand how there can be such rampant disregard for our constitution, how so many lies can be accepted, how this current administration can repeatedly and with arrogance be guilty of crimes and misdeameners without Clinton, Pelosi, Reid, and all the other apparently spinless democrates who are sitting back doing nothing. I cannot understand why this country is unable to make our voices heard. Our illegal aliens can certainly make themselves heard, and will have carte blanc to receive our paychecks and benefits, and our retirements. Soon we won't even have a choice of "English or Spanish." It will simply be Spanish, while Bush and his rich cronies retire to some wealthy island and lavish in monies stolen from the American public. Keith is right on, I agree that the Democrats in Congress were largely just putting on an act. I wish Keith would suggest what options citizens have to try and save our Country now. I recall all the b.s. that was shoveled at us by the "Administration" and the media during the Vietnam War period, but I also remember that the media bombarded viewers with the stark brutality of the war ever day on all the major networks instead of showing sanitized little snippets of the same footage over and over as is happening now. Otherwise the similarites are mind-boggling, and if you have a good recollection of that sad period of American History, then this is a repeat and doubly depressing. The problem is that American citizens this time around are too lazy to get out enmasse and protest, and it is the men of our society who are buying into this idea that participating in violence is a good thing and will somehow miraculously bring about peace. If citizens don't make an uproar then we will have to eat the consequences, which includes rising gasoline prices and inflation and mounting problems here at home that will undermine our quality of life, along with a cold war in the Middle East. Think about this and what we have to look forward to in the years ahead if we let the government continue to become more all-powerful and unstoppable. There is absolutely nothing that dictates the US won't fall as did Rome. The Roman Empire overextened itself trying to control Europe, and convert all people to the Roman way of thinking. It became bankrupt and overrun by corruption, and utlimatley crumbled.

What's happening in Washington by both parties and the White House is criminal. We no longer live in a democratic country. A government of the people, by the people, and for the people, but a government of special intrest, big buisness and the elitetist. Look at the actions and policy on the present adminastration. Do you all remember the Nazi governmental policies leading up to and following Hilter control of Germany. The same thing is happening in America today, governmental involved terrorist attack on it's on country to induce fear and destroy our constitution as we knew it. All in the name of keeping us safe. Shame on all of us, what type of government will we leave our children. Until we start electing statesman instead of politicians, one day you will awaken with Homeland security police at our door requesting our National ID card and infroming us to report Homeland Security Station 2 to check your family in with the New American Government.
