I maybe mistaken but....isn't that what HE is doing now to the men and women of not only the United States but thousands of Iraqi civilians EVERYDAY for the last 4 years...? MR. Bush has also allowed the inhumane act to continue is secret CIA Prisons that hold SUSPECTED Terrorists? Is he NOT the one that is RIGHT NOW oppressing that American people's will to have this WAR stopped? So how long before the Supreme Court sends HIM to the gallows...? Senator Clinton and Obama played it very smart! They voted at the very end when their votes didn't matter. Democrats in both houses have once again 'conceded' to the whining lil baby that inhabits the people's White House. Democrats are now vowing 'false' pledges to challenge the 'baby Bush' at a later time and date. Democrats could easily challenge this Bush - Cheney Regime of Deceit with OVERSIGHT to all the lies, waste, fraud and lost billions that have gone into this flawed War of Lies. Americans are still waiting for the statements of: "Iraqi Oil to pay for this War of Lies!" Americans have been Duped based on 'doctrines of fear' to control. Americans are being lied to, spied on and subjected to daily 'propaganda of fear' to incite conflict in the middle east. There Never was a exit plan for Iraq by design. Fourteen-(14) permanent bases are being constructed as I type this OP-ED. Oops, I mean 'enduring freedom' bases! How touching! Our Mainstream media along with Congress have been very complicit in this daily propaganda of fear to incite with NO oversight . If Our media and or Congress employed proper oversight with fact checking; Iraq would not be a US problem child today. It is no surprise that this Bush administration has been attempting to acquire more and more power under the guise of executive initiative all the while. There never has been a desire to cooperate with Congress as Dubya's contempt has been obvious from the start. Both Bush's and Cheney's desires to coopt further powers has been the design of this group ever since Warergate. Nixon's inabilities to offset the "die cast against him" has been under study and scrutinized by a group of men desirous of not wanting to go through the same process again without defraying the consequences. To that end, the opprobrium of being impeached from office has been attempted to be offset by a neocon-approved Supreme Court, more favorable judges in place, as well as claiming greater power over Congress and then state through precedence that these powers conform with new presidential operations. In effect, this is a game of "King of the Hill". Simply getting to the desired position, coopting power, and then claim that this is the requisite precedence is supposed to confirm egregious power cooption from both Congress and the Judiciary. The power grab has been initiated ever since these guys came into power and the latest US Attorney scandals only points to the issue that these guys are relentless toward this end of acquiring greater and greater powers. I hope a hangnail isn't precedent for this guy to initiate dictatorial powers!

There was a prior 1998 order in place of similar ilk. It had been amended and now completely rewritten. I do not know what the prior order said. The document does indicate that succession is to take place - if necessary - in accordance with all laws (I can only assume that the US Constitution will still be considered law). This document is setting up a protocal for determining whether various scenarious mandate succession policies of Articles 1-3 need to be invoked. The scary part is that an economic or enviornmental interuption considered significant by capital G - can trigger these "emergency powers." I would love for my old Constitutional law professor to look this over.

There is not a "split high court"; although the ultra conservative Chief Justice Renquist passed away, he was replaced with Chief Justice John Roberts, also conservative, in addition to George W. Bush appointing the very conservative Justice Samuel Alito to replace retired Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, a much more liberal Justice. In addition, neither Presidents Clinton nor Reagan abused their privileges as George W. Bush has appallingly and criminally done. President Clinton “obeyed” the Supreme Court ruling regarding mandated FISA Court warrants. In addition, the "Patriot Act" did not exist (thank God) under their tenures to use as a means to circumvent the Judicial and Legislative Branches of our government, as George W. Bush has repeatedly done via the “Patriot Act”. Where was the eavesdropping via warrantless wiretapping of telephonic conversations under Clinton or Reagan? Where was the opening and reading of Americans US mail under Clinton or Reagan? Where was the reading of emails under Clinton (no email under Reagan's tenure)? When was the Geneva Convention violated under Clinton or Reagan? And the list goes on and on an on. If you really think that ANYONE with a brain trusts George W. Bush with this power, after his criminal behavior, you are naive!! George W. I have no doubts that Bush wishes he had complete and utter control of this country, and I woulnd't put it past him to create a reason to impose Marshall Law. That being said, however, the Americans that would have to enforce would never do it. I know enough police officers, not to mention military personnel, that would fight it. Yes, there would be a percentage that would act for the president, but there are too many that never would. You also have what I consider the 'fringe' element, that by most peoples standards on both sides of the political isle, are deemed wacko and dangerous, but they'd never go for it: The militias. There were notices put out that book stores and libraries had to report who was checking out what, especially things pertaining to the Q'ran and Islam. The Patriot Act: Well, do you even know what our government is allowed to do now without our consent-to US?????? Illegal wire-tapping? Maybe when you take a bit here, or a bit there, it doesn't add up to much, however, look at the big picture and see what it happening. Patriot I'm with you, but I understand how it gets out there, listen closely to every word. I understand why Keith can't just spew stuff. Due to the wording of that Directive, it can be interpreted in another way. The only reason why we get it is because we know what's going on, them using oh it's a conspiracy theory days are gone to many of us! Why, because we investigate, read and pay attention to WORDS. Plus, I don't want Keith be considered a nut case. I am willing to be considered a nut case, why because I know I'm not, we have to keep faith in ourselves! We can do that by passing the word around to as many others as we can. Why does everyone want someone else to do things for US? It's gonna take more than just one person to step up to the plate on these issues. Cyndi Sheehan was a big loss to many people, she was one to step up and try to get things done. I have always been against Bush before he was PUT INTO OFFICE, to do the evil deeds him and his co-herts have established! If we wanna keep Keith on we have to watch and listen. I would like for this story to get covered as much as everyone else here. I am afraid that the discussion here is counter-productive to this end -- this story will get swept under the rug if it is considered nothing more than conspiracy theory dribble. Everyone, especially the news networks, needs to understand that this issue is news worthy regardless of NSPD-51's interpretation. If the directive doesn't overstep bounds of constitutionality, and is, in fact, a good act, then it needs to be reported. Bush has performed so poorly in the area of emergency response that if this action is helpful, the media should acknowledge it and report it. If, on the other hand, it is not nefarious in the way many of us fear, but it is not helpful, then it is newsworthy in its reaffirmation that Bush is not leading the country in an acceptible manner regarding emergency response. In this case, the news story should focus on how we need an adequate emergency response protocol and Bush has just screwed it up. And then there is the question whether it opens up the door for Bush to hijak our democratic republic and become Caesar. But I would much prefer for the tone here to be less blatantly alarmist -- its not helping anyone take the claim seriously. I admit to not being a constitutional lawyer. I doubt any of us here are. It should be the responsibility of the news agencies to consult with experts they regularly do business with and have them take a look at NSPD-51. If there is cause for concern, then it would constitute a story that would be what I would consider criminal to not report. If not criminal, then treasonous. From what I can tell, the bill is open to constitutional and unconstitutional interpretation. I am personally worried about this president and his lap dog Al Gonzales being in power to implement it. The problem as I see it is that AL can advise the president that NSPD-51 auhorizes him to take over the country whether it is "legal" in accordance with NSPD-51 or not. Torture is illegal, but that that hasn't stopped Al from telling George W that it is fine. If NSPD-51 is only a little cloudy and looks like the George W. Caesar interpretation might be valid then I think that is all Bush would need -- very few people will stand against him if he's backed by the Department of Justice. So I am very worried. What we need is more light on it. This story must be covered Keith! Don't think that is nothing but conspiracy theory rambling! If it is benign it is still newsworthy! It is newsworthy in all its interpretations! If its not the sort of thing for your show, as some people have pointed out -- if you only comment on news already reported in other places -- then please press for someone else to cover it. MSNBC's lack of coverage of this does extreme damage to its credibility. And if this turns out to be a real threat then I believe all the journalists who ignored it will share ethical responsibility. I am currently praying that Linday Lohan and Paris Hilton will get in a fight over the NSPD-51, causing an accident. Then all the networks will be forced to report about it, even if it only gets passing attention.

With less attendance at our polls than soap opera viewership, I find it funny that Americans think anything can be done. We might have a meaningful turnout if elections were a prerequsite for casting your vote on Idol. If we really want change then some hard facts need to be faced. 1) The senate has always represented the rich and influential segments of our society. The house was supposed to mediate this eletism with broader representation of the populace. 2) The house is filled with wealthy connected political animals with little regard for the average citizen in spite of their constant protestations to the contrary. 3) We need a new division of power, let's say the Congress consists of the Elites(senate) and The House of Commons(HofR)and that each member of the house have a net worth of less than 500k! Better yet, only persons that have had their taxes audited or served jury duty in the past year are eligible as a candidate.
