The "filibuster" item puts into clear perspective the current innuendo that the public's disgust with Congress means disgust with the Democrats alone. The Senate is, for all intents and purposes, evenly divided, if you treat Lieberman as the Bush supporter that he is. The Congress can't get anything done because the Democrats control the House, and the Senate is largely paralyzed. Given who is president, that is a better situation than we were in a year ago.

Yippee! The link I was waiting for, and I know you all are just DYING to hear what I have to say about part 3 of the POST article. Just in case your satire or "B.S." alerts are off, this is A JOKE! :)

OK...the brains at COUNTDOWN already stole some of the thunder I had in my notes about if Bush is the decider, Cheney brings him the menu, so I won't expand on that.

I love how the article mentioned that Cheney wanted to "...energize a stock market battered by scandals such as Enron." Hell, Cheney (and Bush for that matter) were so in-bed with those Enron a-holes. What about the people who worked there and saved like they were supposed to only to get robbed by Ken Lay and his ilk?!

And, also, how 'bout Cheney's willingness for the senator from Vermont to ditch the Republicans to go Independent just to not have to spend some money for Vermont AND thereby give control of the Senate to the Democrats? Guess Cheney eventually got his way, anyway. I guess the billions and billions of $$$ spent, the lives lost, and the lives forever changed by the war in Iraq is money well-spent in his twisted little head.

It seems to me that Cheney not only wants to be a co-president, but I think he wants his hands in all the DC "pots", so to speak. He's weeding out Supreme Court nominees, he has "...direct and indirect power over the federal budget..." (funny, I thought Congress had the "power of the purse"), and he feels he should be chief of staff; I guess a White House chief of staff is no longer necessary. Mary Matalin was quoted in today's part of the article that Cheney brings "a 'spine quotient' to internal debates." I call it something else...um...the word's escaping me now...gee...um...oh yea, A FREAKIN' OUT OF CONTROL FLIGHT FROM REALITY IRRATIONAL *&^%$@?! DICTATOR!!!!

And, on the flip side of the comments made by Senator Lugar, you all got to read the gutteral rantings of the governor of my state, Mitch Daniels, former Bush budget director. I nearly brought up my breakfast at that point. I wasn't expecting to hear from "not my man Mitch" this morning. Isn't it enough that I have to drive by his house every morning on my way to work?! Anyway, he's announced that he's running for re-election, so I'll have another opportunity to not vote for him.

I look forward to reading what you all have to say, to Keith's take on all this, and to reading part 4 in the POST! This is a hell of an education; looks like I picked the wrong week to stop sniffing glue (ANOTHER JOKE!! DON'T DO THAT!!).

I took someone's advice here and googled Nagasaki and Hiroshima, and I thought ohhhh those poor innocent peace loving Japanese surly didn’t deserve the horror dropped on them by the evil imperialistic Americans. Then I thought wait a minute, who started that war anyway, and then I remembered Pearl Harbor! So I decided to research it just a little more. I typed into google “japanese war crimes” and much to my surprise a whole bunch of stuff came up. The first one I found was Nanjing – December 1937. Those peace loving innocent Japanese massacred over 300,000 civilians and POW’s, and raped at least 20000 women. They performed these acts up close and personal with bayonets, swords, bamboo sticks, and of course guns. Guess what else? The Japanese were involved in the development of Germ Warfare, and actually tested their little bugs on Humans! They had a special group specifically for developing and testing their ingenious ideas called Unit 731. It turns out China was a great testing ground. Some historians estimate that more than 200000 Chinese were killed in their little experiments. Of course there are some arguments about the exact numbers, but no denials that they occurred. The peace loving honorable Japanese also appeared to have performed other medical experiments on humans. They found that frost bite is better treated by immersing the afflicted parts into warm water, as opposed to rubbing which had been the prior treatment of choice. Of course such a breakthrough came at a cost. Subjects were placed outside in below freezing weather and doused with water. A Japanese officer would determine if frost bite had set in by tapping limbs with a short stick, if the resultant sound resembled that what a board would make then he concluded it was time. There is wayyyyy more stuff that I cannot put in a single post, but I am beginning to conclude that the Japanese were not so honorable, innocent, or peace loving.

As I have read through 3 of the 4 articles put out by WAPO and following Keith's ananlysis on Countdown, I am coming to one eerie conclusion;

Dick Cheney while being the plague of the Bush administration and never getting a real positive rating by the general public is a better fall guy than Bush himself. Cheney can retreat to his bunker if things get too hot whereas Bush will continue to be dogged far more often by the media.
Though I agree that he is sneaky and vindictive I can't help but feel that I am being led to believe that Bush is just an accidental puppet so he somehow deserves a pass. I want to make sure that both Bush AND Cheney are co-equal criminals in the crime of the century. One would not exist without the other.

Yep them damn things had some amazing after effects on our troops we tested A-Bombs on em about 1 mile from ground zero on afterward in the Nevada Desert in repeated tests in the 50's.
Quite a few of those guys died from cancer,quite a few 3 headed lizards,and other weird phenomenon to living things.But what the hell the Govt denied it for a long time about our solders dying from radiation cancers.
They even sent a questionarre to my family in 1979 as my father died from cancer about 9 years after the tests he had been involved in.The readings were so high on the rad badges they just tossed em as they were all bad and the men knew they had been over exposed.What I hate about our Govt is not the fact we did it.It is the fact we denied it caused those mens ill health when they knew different.Always the cover-up in the good old USA.

Jamie – Regarding Nancy Grace, agreed, and "starting go too far" is being very kind. I personally think she has gone so far over the top and I cannot understand how CNN allows her show to continue.

She has labeled many guilty before being arrested, charged or convicted. She has never ONCE apologized for her reckless and irresponsible accusations. The fact that she is a lawyer makes it worse, in my opinion.

I'm glad to see someone else thinks she has gone too far too. Maybe being a mommy will calm her down, or make her happy?? Something’s is certainly wrong with her. I understand she is a crime victim, but she has know right to behave the way she does.

I repeatedly ran into people who said "Bush wasn't smart enough" when I argued that this administration had deliberately planned to destabilize the entire Middle East and provoke an even broader war by actually spurring on an Iraqi civil war. Everybody seemed to think they just had bad luck or messed up... Well, low and behold... Looks like ‘boy blunder’ wasn't in charge after all.

This entire situation reminds me about how a republican strategist actually came out and said on TV that Dan Quail was deliberately chosen to be Bush Sr.'s running mate so that his stupidity would deliberately draw attention away from the Iran Contra scandal. Oh boy... everybody made so much fun of Quail that any other news and Iran could hardly trickle in. So I wonder, is George just a name-plate spokes person for a divisive and power-hungry neocon party deliberately chosen to draw votes and help lull us into thinking Iraq was just a big mistake???

We’ve all been focusing on George, but if you look even before 9/11 you can tell they had something grand in mind right from the start. Sending spy planes and ships to within 20 miles of a major Chinese naval base was their first action and was about as provocative as you could possibly get. They offered to sell Taiwan an Ageis Navy destroyer and then... Colon Powell himself went around (BEFORE 9/11) unbelievably petitioning European nations to sign an agreement that they would never turn over any US soldiers accused of WAR CRIMES to an international tribunal – an action that should have sparked some serious concerns to say the least as it is against international law.

Oh… they had something grand in mind alright and if you ask me, their plan has only just begun.

Kelly - I don't think Matthews will care until his last viewer turns off the TV machine. However, the subpoenas are being issued. Considering the fact that the current Congress has been in power only for 5 months, the hearings that they have been holding have revealed a lot. The Judiciary Committees are closing in on Rove, but just like any careful prosecutor, they need to build up their case. With the 2 supoenas issued, and challenged by the White House, the next will be Rove. I'm wondering if the House or the Senate will be the one to issue that one.

While I expected more on ending the War from the Dems and certainly nagged and howled when they caved, it is the Senate Repugnikants that have blocked 239 pieces of legislation passed by the House which are waiting for Senate Action. Remember all that "up and down vote" crapola we heard from them over and over again - wellllllll, not when it comes to anything they don't want voted on. Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi should be holding a press conference every day with the Pub blocking of these bills as item #1. Lets hear "up and down vote" again and again from our side.

Pat from Boston, Thank you very very much for your reference to JFK! I have read several of his very last speaches but not the one he was to give that day. It does not surprise me in the least that he would say what he did as he as an honorable man of peace and indeed a hero for getting us through such a tough time. I remember documentaries that showed how the military was only proposing a military solution (go figure, right?) to Cuba. JFK's stragegy was to take an early break from the debates and sen Boby kennedy in who would talk to them and get them to reveal "other" alternatives. Being interested in Space exploration all my life, I was also very shocked to learn that to Jonh Kennedy, the race to the moon was never a race at all, for if it were, he would have never asked the soviets to join us in doing so as he indeed did at a second 'less well known' moon speach given at the UN on September 20nd 1963. To him is was not a race, but an oportunity to bring our two space fairing nations together and I don't believe for a minute that he ever thought it was possible in only eight years without the help of the soviets. We may have ultimately proved him wrong by succeeding alone, but I think we missed out on a large part of what was intended.

To the neocons of the time, sharing rocket technology with the soviets on a 'combined' moon mission must have been so unacceptable that they might have even killed him for it.

Thanks Pam! Carter was on my radar too since I was a boy. I remember recording the Camp David accords and the signing of the Egyptian-Israeli peace agreement on my audiocassette recorder at the age of nine. I did not follow politics back then but I just knew it was a truly historic event. I have also been a member of his Center for peace since the mid '90s. I give him so much credit for getting North Korea to the table and I am even more thankful for his second to last book on how badly Israel treats the Palestinians. If we only treated the situation fairly and not so one sidedly, I think the problem would be completely solved, but that is not how we act. We completely gave Israel the complete green light to bomb ALL of Lebanon last year with Condi nowhere in sight. Israel used phosphorous artillery shells, targeted clearly marked ambulances, DELIBERATELY bombed a UN outpost and every building in Southern Beirut claiming a Hezbollah command center was under each apartment block… Tell me who is the terrorist is such situations? We are not trying to spread peace or democracy. If we where, we would have fully backed Hamas who won 72% of that countries elections. Elections the Carter Center monitored. It seems all we wish to do is kill as if to bring about the ‘rapture’ or some crap. As Keith also pointed out when talking to Jon Dean, The Administration might actually want terrorist to exist as it gives authoritarians like the right someone to drum up hate against so they could actually seize even more power here at home. Sorry for the total rant Pam. I'm also sorry it took me so many years to realise that this country is a spitting image of everthing it said it once stood against. Jimmy Carter was blasted for his book because some people refuse to accept the truth and he was falsely and maliciously labeled an anti-Semite. Nothing could be further from the truth. I truly love this man and I tell everyone I know, "I would die a happy person if I met Jimmy Carter before I died”.

The Camp David accords and the signing of the Egyptian-Israeli peace agreement was a monumental time in our history. I, too, will never forget any of it; as I watched everything and only wish I tape recorded it also.

Jimmy Carter’s words regarding this Administration are so true, as were his words regarding this Administration as it pertained to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, "They just didn't drop the ball, they never picked it up." Indeed!!

Condi has been useless in this Administration, both as National Security Advisor and Secretary of State, absolutely useless!!

Also, it was Jimmy Carter, thirty years ago, who warned Americans of what would happen if we continued to use, or abuse, oil and other resources as we were. Very few listened, and we are living his EXACT words of his warnings today!!

It is very nice meeting you out here Pam and good to know people like you exist! I am not against any race or nation. I am a humanitarianist whose only concern is that we start getting our act together to face the REAL challenges this century has to offer… a century that they head of the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists (the keepers of the doomsday clock) only gave all of humanity a 50/50 chance of surviving. As Martin Luther King Jr. so aptly said, we will either live together as brothers of die together as fools.

I have actively thought about peace most of my life thanks also to the likes of Carl Sagan who instilled in me a fear of nuclear war and the arrogant mentality that could lead to the end of it all. What a waste, especially given just how promising our sciences, arts, and technology seemed to show we could do ANYTHING with only two-thirds of half an effort.

One of the things I do to help insure the safety of humanity is I vigorously propose better emergency preparedness with massive disaster management centers that combine police, fire, some medical, and even the national guard. I propose not building right in harm’s way and I also try to get people to think about living communally so that they can be more efficient and more SELF-SUFFICIENT which are the two absolute keys to nearly ANY disaster scenario, bird flu pandemic, terrorists attack, or Mars invasion [read neocon invasion] you can think of. Just today I completed a three level, five bedroom, 14.4 meter diameter hexagonal home design that would help humanity endure even through the toughest of times… times all the more likely with this administration so liberally throwing its weight around. None of us should consider it safe with how things are going and most of all I fear a new and even more bloody war with Iran which I think would spark another world war as no other nation could permit us to control so much of the ME at any one time.

PS. You probably won’t believe me but I actively sought (e-mailing everyone I could think of) to do a peace demonstration in IRAN as a protest to Bush imperialism. Too often we hear ‘just NUKE IRAN’ and no one gives it a second thought to attack them. What exactly did they do to us? It was OUR coup in the 50s that led to their ‘revolution’ which went surprisingly peaceful for how badly it could have turned. Anyway… Hope you catch this! Hope there is more people just like you as well!

Sue, this is one thing that worried me so much about Clinton. He said specifically that he would cancel the B-2 Stealth bomber as that is a very offensive weapon system that could give the US a first strike capability. He did not. He not only didn't cancel the B-2, he allowed almost every other program to continue and although he did cut back on the military it was nowhere near enough. My fear then was that someone would come to power and be hell bent on using it. Even back then it was easy to see that not always does the right president come to power. We had the head of the K K K elected as a congressman and even a sheriff who tortured African Americans in some southern state to get a false confession become congressman. In a democracy, there is no telling who can come to power. Japan has just elected another Nationalist government for the first time since WWII. Austria elected a Pro Nazi president who was forced to resign only because other European nations spoke out and refused to have even diplomatic ties to them. Thus, even before Bush or 9/11, I saw it a very dangerous path to have a military far more powerful than any other on earth COMBINED. Even before the war, we spent more on the military (400 Billon) when China spent like 40 max… France - 30ish... Add them all up and we outspent them. Anyway... GREAT POINT! Thanks to George however, the cold war is back on and it has forced all other nations to harden their positions and spend more on the military... a dangerous path to be sure in a world so chock full of AAMD (Arsenals of ABSOLUTE Mass Destruction)

Pam, thanks for checking back and for writing! I'm not sure what to do to get people to think that, to this administration, this war has only just begun. To me they have deliberately provoked an Iraqi civil war to destabilize the region and gain the excuses they'd need to attack Iran. TWICE (once in a back alley of Baghdad given by people who did not even give the media their name) they tried to say Iran was arming insurgents in Iraq only to have the now departing Joint Chiefs say there was no such evidence. That is why they are getting rid of Pace... he did not play ball. Anyone who does not see this NEXT war coming from a mile away is blind. Oh... they say, George would never get ANOTHER war authorization to attack Iran. But as Jon Dean pointed out to Keith Obermann two weeks ago, this administration (who has no regard for such things) might just claim it already HAS such authorization in their “war on terror.” We could literally wake up one morning with the headlines "Tehran Bombed: US uses own WMD on Iran" with nothing more to do about it than complain.

Many people don't realize it, but the dems not only gave this trigger-happy administration all the money it asked for, they also pulled language from their new funding bill that would have SPECIFICALLY prevented Bush from attacking Iran without further authorization. Now if that is not a total Green Light for Bush to just go ahead and do it, I don't know what is.

The dems are just dying to show how tough they are on terror so as not to appear weak and are just as likely to try to do so with Iran as the example as the next republican. Nine of ten Republican candidates and even our frontrunner Hillary all want to attack Iran. Even how much this nation is against the Iraq war, the suggestion of a new war with Iran just does not seem to register. It is as if we’ve been preconditioned just to hate without any grounds whatsoever. On MSNBC message boards you frequently hear slogans like fire bomb Gaza or Nuke Iran. Is that who we've become... a race that thinks we can overcome our problems thought MASS GENOCIDE??? We have a military with 60% of our soldiers who admitted they would not report War Crimes... What the heck is going on? Thus, to try to sort of “Break the spell” - the 9/11 fever as Obama called it - I not only offered to do a peace demonstration in Iran, but even offered to do a peace sit (like Greenpeace does when trying to bock shipments of radioactive waste or WMD outside a Nuclear facility or military base) right out in front of whatever nuclear facility the US would attack first in Iran. I literally don’t know what else to do and thought that perhaps the US would think twice if its own citizens stood in opposition to their tyranny and the potential start of WWIII. Hirsh from the New Yorker said that this administration WANTS to use small nuclear weapons on Iran and they have threatened to resign in protest over such an outrageous proposal.

So yes, I fully would do my best to try to do some kind of peace protest or peace sit IN IRAN itself! I sent letters to every celebrity, Metal Band, and news organization I could think of but got absolutely ZERO responses. My hat is off to you if you can organize one or know someone who can. Sue, there really is a good reason to have bases placed in Italy and around the globe-and it's not just for the awesome Italian food!:)

The war in Iraq not withstanding, we do need to have our troops and support facilities in place in case we do need go into someplace-or in the offense mode. We'd still need the same amount of military personnel, which still need, more or less, the same benefits and/or pay, regardless of whether or not they are overseas.

That being said, we have considerably drawn down our bases overseas that past several years, particularly in Germany, with a lot of them starting during Bush 41. Even the command we were at in London just four years ago, where the vice for Commander Naval Forces Europe (CNE), which as sinced changed their acronym, has been consolidated to Naples, where 'the' CNE has always been located. Matter of fact, that's where I met the late ADM Boorda-he was CNE back then. I digress!

And yes, it is to show our presence around the world. I don't see that as a negative-and that may come from my 20 years in the Navy. Again, the war in Iraq not withstanding, we do need to have a presence, and we do need these countries as our allies (thanks Bush for screwing up that). I really don't see it as 'Imperialistic,' and I'd really hate for people to start feeling that way because of Bush. Not implying that you haven't always felt that way, I just don't want this to seem as though it is now a negative because of what the Bush administration has done.

I wish I could speak to you in person, because it would be easier to explain my point of view in a conversation vice posting.

I agree Sue! I personally read where the pentagon did not even want the B-2 Bomber or very large aircraft carriers but that is what congress bought more or less as a jobs program. It was long speculated that the vaunted new F-22 fighter isn't so good after all and was only chosen over the much better F-23 because Sen. Sam Nun (head of the armed services committee) lived in GA where the F-22 was to be built. All that being said, building weapons is still building weapons and it is only common sense to know that one day they could be used.

Jamie - I DO understand where you're coming from and I know it's not just the excellent local food (yum).

However, my point is that we have never ever needed to have a universal presence. We are the only country that has bases everywhere in the world.

We were all just here in America before then and the lack of having bases everywhere didn't prevent us from kicking Hitler's butt and forcing the Japanese military to retreat back to their own country.

The bases we currently have are from the Cold War days and were necessary to keep an eye on what was going on in the USSR. We have satellites to do that now.

If there is a time when we need to deploy forces for legitimate reasons, other countries will make their facilities open to us just as we used British and other bases in WWII.

The funds that could be saved would not be from cutting personnel, but from the maintainence of those bases themselves. Funds saved would be utilized instead to give much needed pay raises to the military and into needed maintainence of our bases here. On base housing needs serious work done to improve them - friends in the military tell me some of the on-base housing is horrid.

These views on our world military presence are not new for me. I have felt this way for decades.
