Considering how much has come out without the documents on subpoena - can we even begin to imagine what's actually INSIDE those documents. Keep those subpoenas flowing. The Courts will be "with" congress because of their constitutional oversight powers.

Just as Nixon lost when he refused to cough up those tapes, these clowns are going to lose too. They're just delaying the inevitable.

But let them deny and delay. The closer to the election that this stuff comes out, the more Repugnikants have to lose. And they'll lose big time. Remember how many Repubs lost their jobs in the next election after the Nixon resignation. And those elections were further away than this one is.

Even now formerly full-throated Bushie supporters in Congress are peeling away. Bush may be left with only Laura supporting him (I'm not sure even Barney's that loyal).

BA Baddusky - I'm sorry but I just have to say this. I'm certain that this post will forever remove me as a candidate for your blogger award.

This blog belongs to Countdown. They have the right to do with it as they wish. It is great that we have a place where we feel safe having discussions on few topics rather than the fire-and-refire hits found on most blogs that are not set up for lengthy blog participation on a specific item. I am grateful for that.

NewsHole, however, may be intended by its owners to be more a "letters to the editor" format. The owners may not judge the blog's success on whether the bloggers feel that conversation can be sustained. It is the right of the owners to make decisions about the blog based on its intended purpose in their minds.

All that being said, if they DO wish to encourage conversation, I certainly wish they'd deal with the stealth moderator approach. Seems as though we get updates infrequently and never on a predictable schedule. They'll post a new item. Run a brief update and, then, disappear again. This is a complaint ONLY if the owners of the blog wish to encourage sustained conversation. It has no bearing on "how hard the editors work" or how "dedicated" they are to the job. If the owners, instead, think of this as a "letters" forum, then it doesn't matter.

All I ask is that they tell us the rules of the game, to set our expectations. What are the hours of operation? Should we be expecting that for some period of each day there will be a sustained moderator presence?

That's all I want to know. What should I expect?

I cannot BELIEVE that Senator Arlen Specter, a long long LONG time Senator, actually bought Cheney's assertion that the Judiciary Committee didn't have subpoena power?! WTF!! Either Senator Specter was incredibly gullible or incredibly stupid or something. Although I agree with his position on stem cell research, he clearly dropped the ball big-time on the subpoena issue. What is it about our dictator-wanna-be that he can turn seemingly intelligent people into spineless goo? I just don't get it...

And, AG Gonzales spent 10 minutes thinking over death penalty cases? Sounds reasonable to me - just like the best and brightest have been hired at the DOJ under Gonzales.

Why wasn't I surprised to see Dan Burton as the "head cheerleader" in denouncing General Batiste's Republican and, therefore, patriotic credentials. Ugh...I used to live in his district on Indianapolis' north side; I don't anymore, though. Julia Carson is my representative, now. How many votes did Danny-Boy miss for golf outings? General Batiste is putting country and service ahead of party. HOW DARE HE!!

Our NBC station here in Black Hawk County is Channel 7 with Ron Steele, an affable guy who began, like KO, as a Sportscaster for them. He's low key and upbeat and his 6 o'clock show goes from Paris Hilton to Paris France to Paris Texas, War updates and Cat up a Tree updates. On the National Level of course, like the 'Hole is, you get down and dirty with Politics, but you also do the same with the Celebrity/Animal/Oddball stuff. Here on the blog, it also goes that way. But it's not advertized as All Politics and it's good that it isn't. We need the inane to keep us from going insane, OK? And if you don't know that, you're looking at a ton of Psychiatrist Bills down the line, or a ton of Scientology Bills, whichever you prefer.

Republicans hate the troops because the troops make it harder for them to sell thier product(the war). The military values honesty and many of them are not easily intimidated. Thus the president has to go through bunches of generals to find one he likes. That general then only lasts a short time until he speaks to congress and tells them the truth. Then he to has to go, because he made the product look bad and the process starts all over. It is so much easier with private contractors who are loyal to company and not country. Look for numbers of contractors to increase as troops start coming out in the spring(we don't have enough troops to keep the same number in Iraq past that). The republicans think they can declare some sort of victory and bring home a few troops and we will all buy back into the product. I hope they are wrong.

Cheney Tortures Logic & Stretches Truth

Washington, D.C. - White House insiders admitted today that Vice President Cheney was observed torturing logic. “The Vice President,” said one staffer who wished to remain anonymous, “is torturing logic and also using a rack to stretch the truth.” The Vice President, who in the past has claimed executive privilege to refuse oversight of his office, has now claimed that he is not part of the Executive branch after all. Mr. Cheney asserts that since his vote serves as the tie-breaker in the Senate and he attends Senate sessions, he is actually part of the Legislative branch. However, Mr. Cheney also has refused to comply with the oversight authority of the legislature, claiming his executive privilege.

“It was horrible,” said the staffer, voice shaking, as he described watching the Vice President torturing logic and truth. “He kept turning the crank on the rack and stretching truth further and further until finally it just snapped. All the while Cheney was shooting piercing glances and hammering the truth with questions. Then he took a whip and tortured logic until logic was moaning and babbling. By the time Cheney was done logic was helplessly and hopelessly illogical. Then he moved on to drowning out protest using a waterboard.“

Asked if President Bush had taken part in the torture the staffer replied, “No, the President wasn’t available to torture logic and stretch truth because he was off somewhere else mangling syntax.”

Tony Snow, White House press spokesman, refuted the charges that the Vice President tortured logic or stretched truth. “We are facing a terrible enemy, which is why it is of the utmost importance to national security that the taxpayers not know how many staffers they are paying to work in the Vice President’s office. It is also vital that no one in America knows who Cheney is meeting with or where he goes. No one should know this crucial information, certainly not regular Americans or Congress, and probably not even the President.”

When asked why citizens should not know what their public servant was doing, Mr. Snow replied, “It’s right there in the Constitution. I’m not sure exactly where, because I’m not a Constitutional scholar like the Vice President is, but he claims it’s in there and I accept his explanation. And so should you.”

Thanks Steve for the great analogy!! You're right on target. I also feel that it is the right of everyone to post in the manner they feel most comfortable, while NOT being abusive.

B A has as much right to make suggestions to Countdown as the numerous people, myself included, make for timely updates. This is indeed his right. B A also brings truth, vast knowledge and information, in conjunction with his humor, and most always incorporates it into one post.

I find this refreshing, just as I do Countdown's incorporation of humor. Personally, I have the utmost respect for B A and admire his writing; as I said yesterday, he's right up there as one of the best, along with Todd, in my opinion.

I believe Jamie said it best in one of her posts, "This is an open blog".

Sure doesn't seem to fit Todd, so it must be someone is looking in the mirror again, or 'projecting' as those psychologist guys would say. I say forget Truth Theory and check out Attribution Theory, where less is more, especially if you're trying to convince folks of how absolutely right you are by piling facts on top of facts. A word of advice - keep it simple stupid. I for one am more of an intuitive type....listening for that truth-tone. Let's face 'facts' - conviction (truth) resides in the heart of the listener, rather than the diatribe of the true believer. Pursuasion is truly an art form....as in 'the gentle art of pursuasion'. Todd's got it and you guys ain't. Heads up - you may have to drop the 'gentle' in this case.

Earlier on I warned these folks about what happened when Ulysse's crew got curious and finally got the Windbag opened up. They got trashed and set back to where they started just like Button Monkey's flawed argument.

The delay in seeing posts is an agravation. It doesn't bother me that much because I'm at or near this station just about any time day or night. I only have a minute or two to post otherwise each post would read like War and Peace and the site would run out of Bandwidth, even if George Soros was picking up the tab like he did for so many sites in 04.

Actually I'm a very jovial sort in realtime. I contribute humorous dialogue and suggestions for scenes to Independent Film Makers and the occasional Journalist.

Muslim beliefs based soley on the Koran would be not much if any worse than the beliefs some Jewish and Christian Sects, but it doesn't stop there.
Islam is more than just reading the Koran, there codes of conduct are based more on the Hadiths than anything else. By Modern Standards the Ideals promoted by Islam run contrary to International Law and the UN Human Rights conventions. This is why practically no one in the International Community wants to see any purely Islamic State anywhere in the World, and that includes a large percentage of Muslims.

As for your claim and those of others that Christianity promotes Racism, I'm sure Martin Luther King would have had a lot to say on the subject. As for Christianity promoting Slavery , I'm sure Nat Turner , who was a Baptist Minister as well as leader of the most famous slave rebellion in American History would have disagreed.
Even the most Draconian Anti-Semetic Legislation of the Code of the Visigoths forbade converts to Christianity any different as a matter of Law than European Christins regardless of their origins.

As for Race based Slavery, the major players in the Transatlantic African Slave trade were Africans and Muslims.

Christ is the main character in the film "Jesus Christ Vampire Hunter".

On the other hand that hasn't kept the USA from establishing diplomatic and economic relationships with Muslim countries because of this particular religious orientation, nor have we attempted to thrust democracy on Arab nations at large (other than Iraq of course). China could be said to be as guilty of human rights violations and the suppression of political dissent but they remain one of our biggest trading partners (can you buy anything not made in China these days??) - you have to look hard. We do complain ever so weakly about human rights violations in China periodically but to what effect? The trade deficit keeps building......

We look at fundmentalism in the Arab world and don't see anything we like and with good reason. All the more reason for us to be vigilant here and make damn sure that religious fundamentalism doesn't gain any more traction than it already has in our daily lives. Apparently some don't recognize it in their own back yard as it's manipulated for nefarious and unholy ends by persons of ill repute (see Bush/Cheney/Rove et al). And yet you righties want more of it....unbelievable.

It's your right Wayne to believe in theistic evolution or any other deity-centered relgion or philosophy of your choosing (by all means feel free to keep that superior attitude as well). Just leave it out of the classroom, out of the political arena, and certainly out of the executive and legislative branches of our government. We don't want the american Wahhabi running the show ..... thanks for understanding!!

His defining work you say, no wonder I wouldn't remember the name. Though I looked up his photo and its not the one I remember.
The one I remember was of a shallow mwtal dish of urine with a crucifix reflected in it. Much better photo than the one you speak of , if it had been a less obnoxius liquid the photo wouldn't have been that bad. Possibly the work of another inspired by Serano's piece.
I looked up Serano's photo and its not even very well done.
Why would anyone chose Urine over easily available apple juice or cider, the lighting effect would have been the same. Nope, that photo was a direct insult to Christ.

People with foreign objects up their butts seems to be a favorite subject of the Lefties.

The clincher in the defunding of much of the trash being passed off as art was the "Performance Artist" who's entire act consisted of masturbating while shouting obcenities.

If you want to view porn go rent a tape or buy a magazine, don't expect the tax payers to foot the bill for it.
As for nudes , people have been upset by them off and on throughout history. The fact that everyone is born naked and that much of the greatest artwork involves tastefully posed nudes has always worked to defuse that sort of sentiment.
Think about this. Photos of Naked people just aren't that interesting. There must be an element of "Pyschological Distance".
The nude statues of ancient greece and rome were painted in realistic colors when new. They were no more interesting than a dime store mannequin. Without the paint they capture the eye in ways they never did when new.

Maplethorpe's work may appeal to you, I find that rather sad.

Also the recent poll results of American Muslims who considered suicide bombings acceptable were a bit shocking. I forget the exact stats.

Scott - this was an appeal to your better Christian nature...try to refrain from being a total over-the -top hypocrite and practice what you preach - admittedly the message was a bit left-handed but demonizing the Muslim faith just seems wrong-headed to me & an attitude that is all to common.

I was only thinking of your image. Try showing a little respect for all Abrahamic religions since they revere the same Supreme Being and show many other similarities along with the noted differences. Both Christianity and Islam were founded on the tradition of Judaism, which in turn borrowed from other and earlier sacred traditions. No religion emerges historically in isolation as a totally unique cultural entity, and if a person is following the tenets of their own religion, than all faiths should by extension be equally deserving of respect..... with or without the burka.

This is just my opinion of course.

Scott - I'm totally with you on the barbarity of that particular practice and you will note that the article stated that this 'custom' was practiced by both Christians and Muslims alike in the areas of North Africa, the Sudan, and various parts of the Middle East and Pakistan where found. Honor killings of young women (recently reported in Afghanistan and elsewhere) are worse by far. In fact, these atrocities are more of the nature of local customs as opposed to anything specifically inspired by religion. Those that are deeply offended by such practices can and will be found among practitioners of all faiths, including the Muslim faith - of that I am certain. For an interesting discussion on the peaceful side of Islam, go to Belief.Net where you will find a number of Muslims discussing terrorism, Islam, and the false (but widespread) belief that terrorism as a world-wide movement is religiously inspired. We all need as much education as possible these days - the alternative is stereotyping, prejudice, misconception and misplaced anger toward entire populations of people - the end result is irrational fear in all the wrong places.
