I'm certain that this post will forever remove me as a candidate for your blogger award.

This blog belongs to Countdown. They have the right to do with it as they wish. It is great that we have a place where we feel safe having discussions on few topics rather than the fire-and-refire hits found on most blogs that are not set up for lengthy blog participation on a specific item. I am grateful for that.

NewsHole, however, may be intended by its owners to be more a "letters to the editor" format. The owners may not judge the blog's success on whether the bloggers feel that conversation can be sustained. It is the right of the owners to make decisions about the blog based on its intended purpose in their minds.

All that being said, if they DO wish to encourage conversation, I certainly wish they'd deal with the stealth moderator approach. Seems as though we get updates infrequently and never on a predictable schedule. They'll post a new item. Run a brief update and, then, disappear again. This is a complaint ONLY if the owners of the blog wish to encourage sustained conversation. It has no bearing on "how hard the editors work" or how "dedicated" they are to the job. If the owners, instead, think of this as a "letters" forum, then it doesn't matter.

All I ask is that they tell us the rules of the game, to set our expectations. What are the hours of operation? Should we be expecting that for some period of each day there will be a sustained moderator presence?

That's all I want to know. What should I expect?

Cheney of Command

Wow...lots of thoughts on these issues...

I cannot BELIEVE that Senator Arlen Specter, a long long LONG time Senator, actually bought Cheney's assertion that the Judiciary Committee didn't have subpoena power?! What is it about our dictator-wanna-be that he can turn seemingly intelligent people into spineless goo? Mr. Cheney asserts that since his vote serves as the tie-breaker in the Senate and he attends Senate sessions, he is actually part of the Legislative branch. However, Mr. Cheney also has refused to comply with the oversight authority of the legislature, claiming his executive privilege.

“It was horrible,” said the staffer, voice shaking, as he described watching the Vice President torturing logic and truth. “He kept turning the crank on the rack and stretching truth further and further until finally it just snapped. All the while Cheney was shooting piercing glances and hammering the truth with questions. Then he took a whip and tortured logic until logic was moaning and babbling. By the time Cheney was done logic was helplessly and hopelessly illogical. Then he moved on to drowning out protest using a waterboard.“

Asked if President Bush had taken part in the torture the staffer replied, “No, the President wasn’t available to torture logic and stretch truth because he was off somewhere else mangling syntax.”

Tony Snow, White House press spokesman, refuted the charges that the Vice President tortured logic or stretched truth. “We are facing a terrible enemy, which is why it is of the utmost importance to national security that the taxpayers not know how many staffers they are paying to work in the Vice President’s office. It is also vital that no one in America knows who Cheney is meeting with or where he goes. No one should know this crucial information, certainly not regular Americans or Congress, and probably not even the President.”

When asked why citizens should not know what their public servant was doing, Mr. Snow replied, “It’s right there in the Constitution. I’m not sure exactly where, because I’m not a Constitutional scholar like the Vice President is, but he claims it’s in there and I accept his explanation. And so should you.”

Cheney of Command

Sue West - Allis: Ditto on the spelling. Typically, this fallacy involves two steps. First, an attack against the character of person making the claim, her circumstances, or her actions is made (or the character, circumstances, or actions of the person reporting the claim). Second, this attack is taken to be evidence against the claim or argument the person in question is making (or presenting). This type of "argument" has the following form:

Person A makes claim X.
Person B makes an attack on person A.
Therefore A's claim is false.
The reason why an Ad Hominem (of any kind) is a fallacy is that the character, circumstances, or actions of a person do not (in most cases) have a bearing on the truth or falsity of the claim being made (or the quality of the argument being made).

"

Gee how about that, ad homimen capitalised for emphasis. Tod must now track down those people and correct them immediately. Maybe in the future, I'll pick up a thread or too and make you really work!!

Cheney of Command

As long as we're using allegories here, I thought Dr. Zaius was the faith-based ape that was prone to bringing dissenters up on charges of heresy or some such .... it's been years. Certainly not the kind of ape that would buy into ...well, evolution for example. Wayne, awhile back I vaguely recall your argument against the validity of evolutionary theory or was it for faith-based religion ....can't quite recall.

Sure doesn't seem to fit Todd, so it must be someone is looking in the mirror again, or 'projecting' as those psychologist guys would say. I say forget Truth Theory and check out Attribution Theory, where less is more, especially if you're trying to convince folks of how absolutely right you are by piling facts on top of facts. A word of advice - keep it simple stupid. I for one am more of an intuitive type....listening for that truth-tone. Let's face 'facts' - conviction (truth) resides in the heart of the listener, rather than the diatribe of the true believer. Pursuasion is truly an art form....as in 'the gentle art of pursuasion'. Todd's got it and you guys ain't. Heads up - His reply came on another thread the next day.

Todd, reference to the other thread, and fanatical Christians. I submit that there are some fanatical Christians who do stupid things, but the difference is in numbers and reasons. The Christians don’t like abortion, consider it murder and feel compelled to act. The Muslims go nuts burn embassies and kill people over things like Cartoons. Were talking about a lot of Muslims, not just a few fringe fanatics. Look at the recent events in Pakistan, a senior mainstream Muslim has called for suicide bomb attacks against Salman Rushdie due to his recent knighthood in Britton. I know you are not good at Maths, and ratios as one of your posts recently claimed that 7:3 was 70%, but you should understand that millions of Muslims who believe in jihad and suicide bombings are a little more dangerous than a few nutty Christians.
scott henderson nv (Sent Tuesday, June 19, 2007 11:00 AM)

*We are now introduced to Scott’s assertion that he is speaking of the “here & now” by use of the word recent. All & all a very reasonable and productive post, until the personal dig contained in the last sentence.

Scott, many people posted that yes, in the present, jihadists are considered by the vast majority of the U.S. population to have committed more acts of violence than radical Christians in terms of “the present”. Perhaps one of the more eloquent of those posts was made by C.A. who defended your amended proposition, “…But Scott, I will agree there does appear to be many more Muslims going nuts and killing innocents at this time in our history then Christians going nuts and killing innocents. Maybe in the next century the tables will turn, who knows. They have in the past.” Technically speaking, you did lose the argument. After being presented with examples of violence in the name of Christ, which in and of itself is sacrilegious, you begin to use the “what I meant was…” argument. Putting the debate regarding religious violence into a nice, neat little “now” time frame is impossible. We do not exist in a vacuum, and time is immense. For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction, that is a law of Physics (Newton’s 3rd actually) which can be applied not only to force, but to fanaticism, and revolution as well.

I hope you all have a lovely evening.
Cheney of Command

Would Countdown mind telling me how it is possibly 'breaking news' that Paris Hilton is 'boring'? Why do I doubt that Countdown is just learning this now? More to the poiint, why do we keep wasting time on this woman who has absolutely no redeeming societal value except titillation? Oh, wait, now that I say that, I guess I do get it. But maybe it's exactly what we should expect. After all, it's about the same level of tastefulness (and interest) as the quasi-dirty (and boring) stories Countdown insisted on telling on the Letterman show last night. I really think Countdown can do better if it wants to. Sheesh.

Cheney of Command

Bonnie: It was a joke. I really laughed so hard considering how aprropriate it was. All the networks used that Breaking News interruption for every move in her case. Last night CNN broke their coverage of a real issue for breaking video news that she had arrived in a car at Larry King's studio and cameras followed her inside, etc. and got panned on the Huffington Post for doing that.

On another note: Has anyone besides me noticed that Rupert Murdock bares a striking resemblence to Pruneface in the old Dick Tracy cartoons? Could they be the same? After all, their both villains.

Cheney of Command

Ahhh Wayne, in reference to the professionally trained button pusher, he obviously does his job well, hence the diatribe that has been going on for well over a week.

I'll admit that I myself like to 'get into it,' but seriously, let's move onto something else to 'get into.' Perhaps you can give us your take on global warming, as that was the 'it' thing a few weeks ago.

Trust me, there is no moral high ground here and no one upmanship that will work.

So, let's move onto another subject that we can all go tit for tat over, K? K!

PEACE!

Cheney of Command

B. I don't question the motives of the Christians shown in the film. Indeed, the earnestness and zeal with which the young people pictured attempt to live out their faith are admirable. Unfortunately, however, it appears that they were unknowingly being manipulated by the directors in their effort to cast evangelical Christianity in an unflattering light."[7]

"
Never seen it, but perhaps you can fill us in on the scenes where Christian kids are taught how to build bombs and behead hostages.
There are numerous instances of Muslim TV stations in the middle east showing just that sort of training for children no more than six, and Muslim children acting out the beheading of Nick Berg.
The most famous "Christian Terrorist Bombers" were Eric Rudolph and Timothy McViegh. McViegh was an avowed Agnostic, who only made one obscure reference to belief in God AFTER he was caught and faced the Death Penalty. Eric Rudolph refused the Bible his own mother sent to him in Prison, stating that he prefered Nietzsche.

I've even seen articles trying to paint the Ruwanda Genocide as the fault of the Catholic Church, because a couple of Nuns and a priest were charged with facilitating ONE of the hundreds of massacres.
The Victims as well as the killers were all Roman catholic, no holy war there. A Vatican emissary was murdered when he tried to intervene. The motive of the killers was pure Black on Black Race Hatred which predated the first influence of any aspect of European society much less the Catholic Church.

I've mentioned before that the OSS report on "The NAZI Master Plan" to destroy Christianity is available in PDF format from Rutgers University.
While Religious Intolerence played a part in Hitler's schemes his Pseudo-Scientific Darwinian Racism coupled with Eugenics was the driving force.
Something like 7,000 Christian Priests and Ministers were rounded up and sent to concentration camps. Catholic Priests who denounced his Euthanasia program were beheaded.
I could go on, and no doubt I will have to just as soon as someone posts a quote from one of Hitler's propaganda statements supposedly proving he was a Christian despite the fact that everyone else on Earth had that lying bastard pegged by 1939.

Nope Buttonboy failed though he'll never even realize it much less admit it.
Cheney of Command

i understand that cheney had a colonoscopy and the doctors found a brain tumor. that explains a lot.

Cheney of Command

"Remember you cannot wave a banner saying Bong Hits For Jesus, but you can wear a T-shirt stating Homosexuality is a sin, Islam is a lie, abortion is murder. You just have to slap them down a little now and then (nothing harmful), allow them to be the brain dead folks that they are for a bit, and one day they will grow up to be shining examples of common sense and fair play. Kind of like raising teenagers don't you think. In any case, I do wish you would stay especially as you appear to be your own person, not too far right or too far left but "Independent". And you know those on the far left and those on the far right will continue to squabble with little compromise and/or respect for the fact that yes others can have different beliefs and positions, and will eventually take this country down into the abyss. For this is where the intolerance originates (from both sides). So you see we need more folks like you before anything real positive can be accomplished in this country.

Cheney of Command

Re:not grading for spelling, this is a professional news site and as such should have professional standards. I wouldn't lay into a commenter about spelling or grammar (unless they were really annoying me) but the main article should be held to Webster's and Strunk and White.

And, Independent, dude, don't leave us. I haven't been hanging out here long but yours is a voice of reason that I for one appreciate.

Cheney of Command

Jim Schulte, Albany, Oregon, With all they have done and sometimes I've always thought there is no way that these two deserve to be killed, it's to easy for them they should be in jail for the rest of their lives all of them. By Modern Standards the Ideals promoted by Islam run contrary to International Law and the UN Human Rights conventions. This is why practically no one in the International Community wants to see any purely Islamic State anywhere in the World, and that includes a large percentage of Muslims.

As for your claim and those of others that Christianity promotes Racism, I'm sure Martin Luther King would have had a lot to say on the subject. As for Christianity promoting Slavery , I'm sure Nat Turner , who was a Baptist Minister as well as leader of the most famous slave rebellion in American History would have disagreed.
Even the most Draconian Anti-Semetic Legislation of the Code of the Visigoths forbade converts to Christianity any different as a matter of Law than European Christins regardless of their origins.

From the Corpus Juris Civilis which demonstrates that Slavery was a purely a matter of secular authority and necessity and which it clearly states to be contrary to Natural Law.
"1. Freedom, from which men are said to be free, is the natural power of doing what we each please, unless prevented by force or by law.

2. Slavery is an institution of the law of nations, by which one man is made the property of another, contrary to natural right.

3. Slaves are denominated servi, because generals order their captives to be sold, and thus preserve them, and do not put them to death. Slaves are also called mancipia, because they are taken from the enemy by the strong hand.

4. Slaves either are born or become so. They are born so when their mother is a slave; they become so either by the law of nations, that is, by captivity, or by the civil law, as when a free person, above the age of twenty, suffers himself to be sold, that he may share the price given for him.

5. In the condition of slaves there is no distinction; but there are many distinctions among free persons; for they are either born free, or have been set free.

"
As for Race based Slavery, the major players in the Transatlantic African Slave trade were Africans and Muslims.
The Portugese, who played such a distinctive role in the African Slave Trade were Catholic and they were also Mixed Race and Black as well as Whites with the majority of the Nobility of mixed race.
Many Free Black Men in the US were among the Slave owners who defended the practice.

Color based Racism was a Product of the early stages of development of the science of Physical Anthropology and Darwin's Origin of the Species.
Until that time the Definition of race had nothing to do with the Color of your Skin, it was purely a matter of national origin and the distinctive features of the society you lived in.

And once again I remind you that "Christian Identity" is not a sect or denomination of Christianity.

Terry says
"There are Muslims that would take your slanderous remarks much more than seriously.....are you guys completely nuts in your monumental arrogance or just blissed out on your own self-importance? The Buddhists would let similar remarks go should they be directed toward their illustrious founder - because of their devotion to the concept of compassion. Devout Christians might also ignore such heinous and blasphemous insults being slung at Jesus based on the same principle of compassion and forgiveness - "
And I suppose we should bow to fear of reprisal?
Allow fear to rob us of freedom of Speech?
You make my point for me.

I've seen hundreds of depictions of Christ on the cross in supposedly humorous cartoons.
Christ is the main character in the film "Jesus Christ Vampire Hunter".
Then theres the Gay Photographer Maplethorpe who displayed his "Piss Christ" photo of a crucifix reflected in a plate of Urine.
I don't remember any cities in flames after those appeared. Of course, these countries do not have histories of democratic rule and their politics is essentially governed by fundamentalist religous doctrine - where the clergy play very decisive roles in the interpretation of those laws. The Taliban in Afghanistan are of this pursuasion as well as we know.

On the other hand that hasn't kept the USA from establishing diplomatic and economic relationships with Muslim countries because of this particular religious orientation, nor have we attempted to thrust democracy on Arab nations at large (other than Iraq of course). China could be said to be as guilty of human rights violations and the suppression of political dissent but they remain one of our biggest trading partners (can you buy anything not made in China these days??) - you have to look hard. We do complain ever so weakly about human rights violations in China periodically but to what effect? The trade deficit keeps building......

We look at fundmentalism in the Arab world and don't see anything we like and with good reason. All the more reason for us to be vigilant here and make damn sure that religious fundamentalism doesn't gain any more traction than it already has in our daily lives. Apparently some don't recognize it in their own back yard as it's manipulated for nefarious and unholy ends by persons of ill repute (see Bush/Cheney/Rove et al). And yet you righties want more of it....unbelievable.

It's your right Wayne to believe in theistic evolution or any other deity-centered relgion or philosophy of your choosing (by all means feel free to keep that superior attitude as well). Just leave it out of the classroom, out of the political arena, and certainly out of the executive and legislative branches of our government. Though I looked up his photo and its not the one I remember.
The one I remember was of a shallow mwtal dish of urine with a crucifix reflected in it. Much better photo than the one you speak of , if it had been a less obnoxius liquid the photo wouldn't have been that bad. Possibly the work of another inspired by Serano's piece.
I looked up Serano's photo and its not even very well done.
Why would anyone chose Urine over easily available apple juice or cider, the lighting effect would have been the same. Nope, that photo was a direct insult to Christ.

People with foreign objects up their butts seems to be a favorite subject of the Lefties.

The clincher in the defunding of much of the trash being passed off as art was the "Performance Artist" who's entire act consisted of masturbating while shouting obcenities.

If you want to view porn go rent a tape or buy a magazine, don't expect the tax payers to foot the bill for it.
As for nudes , people have been upset by them off and on throughout history. The fact that everyone is born naked and that much of the greatest artwork involves tastefully posed nudes has always worked to defuse that sort of sentiment.
Think about this. Photos of Naked people just aren't that interesting. There must be an element of "Pyschological Distance".
The nude statues of ancient greece and rome were painted in realistic colors when new. They were no more interesting than a dime store mannequin. Without the paint they capture the eye in ways they never did when new.

Maplethorpe's work may appeal to you, I find that rather sad.

PS
George Hammond.
The KKK is not a church, denomination, nor sect of Christianity, in fact it doesn't even qualify as a religious cult.
Burning a cross is sacrilege.

PPS
Terry last I heard most American Black Muslims were Wahabi. That may have changed but if so it hasn't made the news.
You may be too young to remember the "Zebra Killers".
And perhaps you never heard of Louis Farakan and "The Nation of Islam".
Also the recent poll results of American Muslims who considered suicide bombings acceptable were a bit shocking. I forget the exact stats.
The most virulent racists seem to be White Democrats and Black Muslims.
Cheney of Command

Scott - your composition has definitely improved but your reading/comprehension skills still need some work.

Cheney of Command

Terry Columbia, SC (Sent Sunday, July 01, 2007 8:50 AM)

Really? Perhaps then you can elaborate - what did you mean by the following:

"as you've already noted on numerous occasions, some Muslims aren't so good at turning the other cheek.
Who reads these blogs we might ask???

Just a word to the wise......... "

Cheney of Command

If you think the Muslims go nuts over supposed defamation of the Prophet, you should watch Faux News and the other NeoConNutJobs go nuts over their fake "War on Christmas". Fanatics of any flavor are to be avoided.

Cheney of Command

Wayne. Don't project your sadness onto me, project it on to Jesse Helms. He was the one Mapplethorpe's work 'Appealed' to. I'm just an observer of the times we live, and have lived in. As Bob Dylan once observed, "...sometimes, even the President of the United States, must stand naked." Dubya could use a coat of paint.

Cheney of Command

Sue, West Allis, Wisconsin (Sent Monday, July 02, 2007 11:44 AM) Yea!!
