Hi. Another brief point to add to the above paragraph concerning yesterday's Supreme Court decision is the fact that at the time of Brown VS. Board of Education, William Renquist was a clerk or worked for the Court in some capacity at the time, and he wrote and published a SCATHING SCARY opinion of the Brown decision. My professor in one of my constitutional law classes in college read it to us, and it was frightening. So, Justice Renquist may be dancing a jig wherever he is.

I already posted by thoughts about last night's Democratic debate in the previous thread, so you're welcome to read them there.

I liken this congress to a skilled, albeit not very powerful fighter. The first exit strategy bill getting vetoed was just a jab that got parried. Voting down the President's emmigration bill was one that landed. The next “coordinated effort” will just be a jab, and will probably will not land. Eventually, the opponent will weaken, and we may see a lot of staggering around the ring. Of course, the real sockdollager is scheduled for November, 2008. I will enjoy watching them as they realize that it's coming, they can't do anything about it, and they brought it upon themselves.

It has come to my attention that too few Americans care what happens in Britain for the latest foiled terrorist plot to be an effective distraction from the current domestic crisis we are experiencing here at the White House, and you, in your undisclosed non-executive branch location.

Therefore I have been monitoring television broadcasts (legal surveilance unless someone finds out I am using an illegal Dish TV descrambler), to ascertain what it is that actually concerns most Americans. My research has revealed a trend. An overwhelming amount of television time is devoted to a girl named Paris Hilton (photo attached).

This gave me the idea that maybe we should schedule a news conference, write a tightly controlled script for George, and announce that we have uncovered a plot by Islamic extremists, with ties to Al Queda, to bomb Paris (Hilton).

Let me know what you think. We could always leave George out of the loop and hand this one to Tony to do his usual routine and implicate David Gregory in the plot.

I wonder what would happen if no one, I mean absolutely no one but perhaps the candidates themselves, showed up to vote on election day because the chocies were so bad. Would that not be a hoot. I would like to begin with stating I do not wish to offend anyone on here. I have been reading this blog for many, many months now. I felt a need to contribute to this dialogue today as it relates to what has now become a primary focus of today’s discussion, the "resignation" of Independent from this blog.

I will start with the following, “Trust magnates were superior to law” (Gustavus Myers)

Upon reviewing this morning’s posts, I read Independent’s last post, directed at Jamie. It was most disturbing to me. Having read multiple posts from all of you, I have enjoyed such benefits of entertainment, informative discussion, and lively debate and have also read many insults and negative attacks back and forth.

Independent, you have been guilty of this many times, although through your words to Jamie, it is apparent you do recognize these actions. Somewhere along the line, and as you became a daily blogger, you began frequently addressing the behavior of others. You took this to a level which I found hypocritical, both for the aforementioned reasons, in addition to your devoted efforts at protecting our Constitution. I believe the First Amendment addresses such. By acting as you have, you have attempted to strip all those you addressed of their First Amendment right. If you had limited your opinions to one or two posts, I could have just let it go. On the contrary, you have continued to request that people stop writing in a manner you do not like. You have made every possible effort to prevent other bloggers, to include both Scott and Larry, from excercising their First Amendment rights.

This is hypocrisy, as you cannot champion the Constitution, while leveling condescending comments to others who write what they chose to write, no matter how “wrong” or “hateful” their comments are. You also cannot fight for the Constitution while telling those who respond to such hate-filled speech “there tone is wrong”, "do not reply", etc. This is not only hypocrisy at it’s greatest, it also shows it is you, not Jamie, who has a deep-rooted perception of superiority.

Sue has been the sole blogger who has remained true to her statements of ignoring those who bother her, as she does not respond to either side. She also does not critique the behavior of others, which is also a sign of superiority. Sue is the only one, from what I have read, who has walked her talk. You certainly have not.

You have continued to affect an attitude on this blog, which is in no way your right. You do not surpass anyone here in rank or quality, nor are you an authority on this blog. You accused Jamie, through her writing and opinions, of being superior; yet it has been you who has displayed a personal sense of greater value and excellence on this blog. You cannot let anything go, and you refuse to accept Sue’s advice and just pass over those people you find offensive.

You came to New Hole several months ago; your posts were educational, informative and humorous. You also chose to engage with and respond to both Scott and Larry; although I haven’t seen Larry posting lately, and your responses did include negative attacks , abusive language and you displayed a continued need to keep a subject going until you felt you had won, taking days some times. Yes, Independent, the very reasons you have given for “resigning” from the blog, you have been guilty of, and for quite some time. Your comments to Jamie were out of line, i.e. “you are the reason I’m leaving…"you were the final straw,”...“you feel you are superior,”, etc. In my opinion, that was one of the most hate-filled diatribes I have read on this blog.

A few days back, in Sue’s words, “a flea” stated, “you are all too serious”. I laughed at the time. His words now ring true.

In closing, I am grateful for everyone here, including you Independent. I ask you please take this advice, “gratitude alone can keep you looking toward the All, and prevent you from falling into the error of thinking of the supply as limited; and to do that would be fatal to your hopes.” While you may disagree with people’s thinking and behavior, I choose to be grateful for everyone here; as those whose opinions I disagree with have kept me focused on my beliefs and goals. I am also grateful for Jamie, and perhaps I read her writing differently that you, as I haven’t felt her to be offensive, or having any sense of superiority at all.

If this is a legitimate terror attack attempt, why isn't anybody bringing up the fact that Bush and his cronies just keep telling everyone that "we are fighting them there so we don't have to fight them here" - so wouldn't that apply to Britain as well since they are "over there" with us?

This administration has fu**ed up the war in Iraq from the beginning; they invaded a country that never attacked us, had no WMD's and no association with Al Quaida, and no exit strategy or alternate plans if, say a civil war broke out. Yet Congress still allows Bush to be in the driver's seat and steer our troops, not to mention the rest of our country, into hell. It's like a neighbor we had many years ago. His teenager, a NEW, INEXPERIENCED, NAIVE, "I know everything" driver was presented with a brand new car when he passed his driver's test. He proceeded to wreck it. So they did the only logical thing; they bought him another. What happened then? You guessed it - another accident totaling yet another car. And yes; they bought him a third. We moved away after that so who knows how many times they gave this kid the opportunity to wreck yet another vehicle with no consequences for his actions. Sound familiar?

My husband is now in the war in Iraq and also has been to Afghanistan. He said when they first went (and this applies to both war zones) the kids would stand by the side of the road and wave. Now the kids stand by the side of the road and flip them the bird. This administration just keeps wrecking the car and Congress continues to hand over another set of keys in the form of additional funding with no oversight. How many cars...in this case how many young military men and women and innocent Iraqis have to die before we stop handing Bush yet another set of keys?

Larry in Charleston--and if you weren't so convinced that black women are promiscuous, you'd probably realize that the reason that AIDS/HIV is prevalent among them is the number of bisexual and homosexual black males who infect their partners--partners who think they are in a monogamous relationship.

Please try doing a little something called reading and research. I am generalizing here, but black women are discouraged by their churches, which they are very active in, from using birth control—particularly, condoms. Black men who are gay or bisexual are discouraged by churches and the community from living openly. Women do not know that their partners are gay or bisexual, they think they are in monogamous relationships and believe that condom use is a sign of promiscuity. These things were once true for white women, and at that time, about the worst thing they faced was syphilis and blind children. There was, by the way, an outcry and something was done—this is why we have blood tests today.

Seriously--do you people screen these things at all? My postings frequently don't go up, but Larry's rants do. Are you interested in informing people, or are you interested in drama like our friend, O'Reilly?

What is it about canvas sided Trailers? Is it that metal sided trailers aren't photogenic enough?

I was a bit flabbergasted when they pulled the dark canvas back from the "WMD" trailers so the whole show looked like a rock & roll stage, just right for the cameras.

Now the roll a car that was supposedly rigged to explode into another canvas sided trailer snd pull the canvas back for a good view!

What better way to create actual problems than to put a fake bomb where it could be seen and then a real one to go off when the car is moved! that would call for a bomb proof trailer. Not a canvas one with the sides rolled back for the photographers. Sounds like another fire at the Reichstag to me.

Why is you in denial? Your guest, a former CIA employee (janitorial staff, perhaps?) and an "expert on terrorism" kept pushing the line that these London bombs were somehow trivial and insisted that the only real bombs were in Baghdad. This was London, for God's sake! These were explosive devises! Even my daughter, who wasn't watching the broadcast but heard him from the kitchen, though that he sounded like a jerk.

In case you've never witnessed a propane tank explosion, let me tell you what I once saw. A car on an elevated highway caught fire after an accident. There was a propane tank in the trunk of the car. The firemen kept back but continued to spray water on the car. Suddenly, there was a 50-foot geyser of flame, a super-hot blowtorch of fire shooting up into the sky. It lasted about 20-30 seconds.

Now put that same car on a London street in front of a night club with 1,700 people inside. And multiply the number of tanks. Not a pretty thought.

It's obvious that you hate the President and his administration of the war on terrorism. That's your right. And you certainly have your reasons. But don't let that hatred warp your perception of the facts. Terrorism is real; baseball is a game. If you can't tell the difference, go back to reporting sports.

Scott, the problem is more deep-rooted. Beginning at infancy, millions around the world are born into a religion or faith. There are several religious teachings within these faiths. For example, the Catholic Church prohibits the use of birth control and the Islamic faith prohibits drinking alcohol, eating pork and gambling.

What comes to mind regarding this issue is the Catholic Church telling me, as a Catholic, in 2004, I could not vote for John Kerry because of his pro-choice position. Rudy Giuliani is now experiencing the same. I feel this wrong. However I feel about Rudy Giuliani, the Catholic Church, just like with John Kerry, and should not stake a stance as such. The Church is basically stripping voting rights of many Catholic Americans.

Very devout Catholics, who are democrats, did not vote in 2004, as they would not vote for George W. Bush. I know a few people who did not vote in that election based on this. Many devout Catholics who are republican and support Giuliani will not vote in 2008 if he is the republican candidate. In my opinion, this is a way of "policing" citizens of this country, even though our government is not a theocratic one.

I am a practicing Catholic; however, I will not allow the Church to take my rights away by stating I cannot vote for the candidate of my choice. This was unfair to John Kerry and it is also unfair to Rudy Giuliani now. There are also many traditions in both Church's and faiths and when one follows those traditions to the letter, as Amy gave examples of, this does affect the issues both of you have outlined.

I recall you stating you could be described as an "Agnostic", and because the majority of these "rules or traditions" usually come from organized religions. Had I not been raised by Catholic parents, it might be difficult for me to understand; however do understand what Amy is saying and completely agree with her based on my experiences in the Catholic Church.

Just a few miles from my home, within walking distance, is one of the oldest Negro Universities in the United states.
The closest White University was in the next town about 25 miles down the highway, at the time it was for Seminary Students. The closest University that the average white student could expect to attend was 65 miles away.
When our schools were desegregated the Black students in general were not that pleased by the idea since local black schools were often better run than the average white schools.
At the same time several local high schools were condemned due to structual failures. I can't remember a single protest or act of violence directed against any Black students that attended our school, but the Yahoos from the outlying communities who were forced to bus to our schools while theirs were being repaired were a constant source of friction, they resented being bused to a better quality school.

The Black students I remember best were those who lived in my neighborhood, There were far more Black Families in my Neighborhood than Whites and I can't remember a whole heck of a lot of friction because of it.
You'd have had to have lived in the larger cities to see Racial violence, we only saw it on the evening news.

As for the Busing problem, I'd expect that the millions of gallons of gasoline burned in order to shift kids around based on race amount to a tidy sum. A sum better spent in improving the schools that don't measure up.
Also that burned fuel contributes to dependence on foreign oil, increases gasoline sales, and, if al-Gore is correct, contributes to Global Warming.

As for the trailers used to haul the cars in London, they may be regular trailers, but the Military often uses Kevlar tarps to protect troops while they perform vehicles repairs. The Kevlar sheets are to stop fragments from mortar shells or grenades.

Unless the guys who set themselves on fire in Glasgow turn out to be NRA lifetime members I think we can safely assume this was an attempt by devoted if rather inept Jihadis.

I had posted a Youtube link to videos of Jackasses blowing up stuff with various size propane cylinders, the site filter must have deleted it.
The dumbasses in those videos managed not to kill themselves and some blasts were nothing to speak of, but several blasts were very impressive. The hotter the tank gets before rupturing or being blown open the greater the blast effect.
I expect the London Bomb Makers were unable to obtain explosives eve in small quantities. This speaks well of the effectiveness of the British Police.

• 36% of new jobs require a college degree; and additional 31% require some post-secondary education. That is: 67% of all new jobs require education beyond high school. That statistic shows why it is so important that good K-12 education be available to all children, regardless of race.
• The median income for HS grads is $31,000; for college grads, $50,000. The differential over a lifetime comes to $1.1 million dollars. No wonder parents and kids are willing to borrow, borrow, borrow to get kids through college.
• Only 73% of American kids graduate from high school
• Nearly one of of three freshmen entering college requires extra preparation (usually in so-called "remedial" courses). One out of three.
• Of those who go into remedial courses, most fail to earn a degree. 76% who go into remedial reading fail to graduate; 63% of those who take remedial math.

These dismal statistics were gathered for the American Diploma Project, a non-partisan consortium of 22 states (as of my last contact) working to raise high school graduation standards and, it is to be hoped, the quality of education for all students.

As a college writing teacher, I see students with many racial, ethnic, social class and economic background. Many kids from so-called "good" suburban districts are just as underprepared as minority kids from desperately poor districts. My point is that students from schools without adequate buildings, skilled teachers, science facilities, computers, books, or classes in the arts are not playing on a level field. And too often, students are stuck in these schools because their families are too poor to move to another district where there may not even be properties to rent, let alone rent at prices the poor can afford.

The fact is that, as someone once said, "Education is wasted on the young." Even kids of privilege fail to take advantage of opportunities to learn. But many kids have NO opportunity. I'll bet anyone reading this can think of schools that he or she would never dream of allowing his or her kids to attend, or neighborhoods that never got a second look because the schools were not highly regarded or worse. But in the views of many, these schools are OK for other peoples' kids.

A few months ago, ABC News had an hour-long show on kids in an urban city in NJ (Camden?) and looked not only at their schools but the struggles of their families to find and maintain housing. The show contrasted the lives of these kids with a group of the same age from an affluent suburb. There was no way not to see how tremendous the head start is for kids from stable economic backgrounds and good schools. And that might be the point of the Court's decision.

Brenda - I agree with you and I am a life-long and very liberal democrat. I use the term neo con all the time. I agree with your post. I also believe people's feelings do get hurt, or rights are being taken away, when they cannot respond to another. I, for one, cannot stand these "newcomers" on the blog and I also agree with you analogy of why more have recently appeared.

I also believe it's because Fox NOISE blasts MSNBC/NBC constantly, in addition to the sinking ship of George W. Bush. These people are so ashamed and embarrassed by the idiot in the White House they come here and act like blabbering children. They are so mad they have no other options left!!

I was attempting to state we should all take Sue's advice and ignore them; however, we can also choose to ignore the responses directed at the neo cons if this too bothers us.

You are confusing your eras.
Of course Black slaves didn't vote and in many places free blacks were not allowed to vote during Slave days, Literacy had nothing to do with it at that time.
The "Jim Crow" laws came after the civil war and were misuses of civil authority to prevent Blacks from benefiting from their rights under the Constitution.

There were Black voters regardless, the majority of the states didn't use such tactics to prevent Blacks from voting, so your earlier statement was an exageration.
Blacks were not entirely illiterate, some of our greatest scientists and medical researchers were Black and regardless of discrimination Black Universities operated all over the US. No doubt a high percentage of the Black Population were denied their rights but the right itself existed. The Civil Rights Act just made it a Federal matter.

So literacy tests were not disallowed so long as everyone regardless of race took them and the rules were followed impartially.
Many people back then learned to read at home before they ever went to school. I have a few copies of the sort of books available for that purpose in those days.
As I mentioned Black schools around here were fairly held to high standards. A Black Child had as good a chance of learning to read as most mountain folk, probably better in some cases.

Also it does make a great deal of difference which party was determined to hold down Black people, especialy in interfering with their right to vote.
Democrats started the KKK and they were the ones who joined it in droves. Still are.
Like I've said before, every virulent Racist I've ever met was a White Democrat or a Black Muslim.

But given the stats I quoted above, the most important thing kids can learn to help them both finish college and become conscious citizens is reading. And not "reading" in the sense of literal decoding, but reading to understand and test out and construct ideas. the "writing" they learn in school is very often writing that can come out of their own heads from their very limited experience. So they have to write and we have to read it. But with a community college background, you know what I mean when I say that even many middle-class kids leave high school poorly educated. And looking at our current president, clearly rich kids with Ivy-league diplomas aren't always "well educated," either. Who could be less interested in ideas outside his own head than George Bush?

The point of literacy tests is to keep blacks, immigrants and the poor from voting. "Literacy" is always a moving target; today, what we require from students in terms of literacy is vastly different from the "signature literacy" (the ability to sign one's name instead of use a mark) that was a common standard in the early to mid-19th century.

Originally, the Republican party was established in the 1850s as the party of anti-slavery. So of course, white Southerners after the Civil War were "Democrats." By the middle of the 20th century, things had changed with Kennedy's and Johnson's commitments to Civil Rights. The party labels don't matter; it is the ideology of racial superiority, under whatever name, that goes against the statement, "all men are created equal."

Literacy tests can also be fashioned to favor the dominant cultural group. Here is an example of how that might happen, taken not from a test but from a simple conversation between a school official and a child, as seen in the ABC documentary I referenced above. The school official asks a homeless student to name the 3 meals we eat each day. The kid can't do it, and he of course appears less than intelligent to his questioner. However, to the viewer, who knows the kid never sees 3 organized meals, the fact that the kids can't say "breakfast, lunch, dinner" or some variation is understandable.

We wouldn't have a voting rights act if people of both parties hadn't attempted to disenfranchised blacks. You might consider why the entire South has tended to vote Republican since the Civil Rights Acts were passed under a Democratic president. And from someone who was born and raised in the Republican T of Pennsylvania, I can tell you there have been plenty of KKK people who vote Republican.

Interesting post from a guy in Bankock from another blog. He had access to both CNN and BBC at his hotel and compared the coverage of the Glasgow car fire on both networks.

He was upset that CNN pre-empted all their normal programming and was exclusively fixated on this one event - in fact linking it to al Quaeda despite any supportive facts. The BBC covered it in detail as a troubling event but reported the facts and moved on to their other programming.

The poster wondered how it was that one story could dominate our airwaves - a question I have been asking for a long time. (See: missing women, astronaut in diapers, Anna Nicole, she-who-must-not-be-named, etc.)

Gelignite is a common explosive used for mining in the UK. We use it here as well. Last time I ran across any was when a friend found several cases of the stuff in the storage shed of a farm where he'd rented a house for the summer.
In that case the stuff was packed like big rolls of Sauage.
Till recent years finding stay stores of mining and stump blowing explosives was not uncommon.
The local high school science labs had to be cleared of Picric Acid containers left over from old lab experiments. That stuff crystalizes with age and can explode if dropped. You make it by disolving hair and leather scraps in nitric acid.
Since the Bus bombings a few years back the Brits have redoubled their efforts at securing explosives and chemicals.
They've been cleaning up UXB since WW2 so they have plenty of practice.
Also the IRA bombings had been more than enough impetus to prevent explosives and the necessary chemicals from being available to just anyone in quantity.

While any pipe bomb could bust one or more cylinders a higher brisance explosive would have made certain.

Fulminate of Mercury would be my choice of a homemade high brisance explosive, it makes a good blasting cap as well and doesnt take much to set it off especially when mixed with ground glass.
No wiring required just a simple Mad Bomber Metisky style pencil.That ones a jewel of simplicity. They even reduced his sentence in return for giving the secret to the military.

Jamie, I just stated my opinion, nothing more. I do however find it odd that so many are now on this blog ever since I started being here. Why is that, the truth is getting so close that they have to come spew their fox news crap? I already knew about Murdoch and his agenda. Name calling is not having a conversation. I have stated before in another blog and I have know idea which one, that everyone has a right to say what they want and that freedom of speech is one of the things we have left of our constitution.
When all of you were talking about Ann Coulter.

I'm not going to continue to try to fix when some things aren't taken right and I'm not here to make close friends but to state my opinions and discuss things that are going on. Blogs are meant for people to do so.

When I first started here I also let you all know that I always have a THANK YOU KEITH OLBERMANN BUTTON ON MY PURSE I TAKE WITH ME EVERYWHERE, along with my God Is Not Spelled GOP and my Torture is UnAmerican Button. I watch Keith because he has spoken things that I feel is for all of our benefit! To Me HE IS A TRUE PATRIOT! and even with a threat from anthrax, which Murdoch let be reported, he didn't yield!
I do understand it's hard to keep up with all the blogs and trying to keep everything together, and things can be misunderstood.

This is for everyone who it would pertain to, not any certain person, just so that it is clarified!
I know some may protest on here and some may not, but if you don't protest then why sit on a blog and just B|@ch about it. If you have time to do this then get off your lanky butts and take to the streets, there are always protests somewhere going on.. this makes some of us wonder why we are doing all the work for those who just sit on their rumps and whine instead of doing something!
