If you dig a little more into the Bill Frist cat "adoption" story you will find that Bill adopted very few cats legally. He "adopted" most of his victims by stealing family pets in Princeton. His motive was to study the living and beating heart, so he would dissect the stolen cats while they were still living. I know this because I was a classmate of Bill's at Princeton and took many courses with him. He used to joke about his "little nightly forays into people's backyards."

Sorry that I cannot identify myself, I do not trust my government or the Frist family. However, I have no doubt that you could confirm the truth of my story with a little additional research.

As far as Mr. Murdoch goes, yep, he's a scum bag, but I don't know if I have the energy to keep up with his scuminess (I just made up that word) in addition to our administration, Congress, and the other people that seem to p*** me off on a daily basis. Great report, though!

More toasts and kudos of appreciation to Keith and/or whoever was responsible for the Larry Johnson interview this evening regarding the events in London. I can always depend on COUNTDOWN to find a measured, educated, calming voice in the middle of all the things and people who are trying to scare us and keep us afraid. Mr. Johnson probably has a future of audits and whatever else ahead of him, as well.

I usually take advantage of the indulgence of the great participants of this blog and try to end the week on a high note; those of you who've seen HISTORY OF THE WORLD PART I will get this reference. RE: Reporting of the London devices. CNN is describing the devices found in London as "potentially viable" bombs. The quotation marks are theirs, not mine and meant to signify their quoting British police. Regardless, that is fine example of spooky and vague language. Everything is "potentially viable" as a bomb under the right circumstances. I loved your guest on this subject. I thought it sounded iffy just because growing up on the farm you learn quickly that it is gasoline's nature to burn unless vaporized. Nice to hear it from an expert though.

RE: Rupert. I heard a high pitched whine and the sound of dingos hiding their pups as his blood pressure spiked. Or whatever pressure from whatever it is Rupert has thundering in his evil veins. The iPhone piece was also good, although I wonder when Countdown will be getting its own iPhone. I'll bet Countdown won't be standing in any lines. By the way, I see we made it about 57 minutes tonight as a Paris Hilton-free zone, but then Countdown just couldn't resist the urge any more. Anyone in the medical field knows that cats are used to disect, intubate and experiment with in the course of any class on anatomy etc...I would rather have disected a cat in my anatomy course (to learn muscles, nerves etc) than a human (although med students, physical therapists disect humans as well). I never knew where the cats came from, I can assure you I never went out and found my own to experiment on, that's a tad creepy.

Heres a bit on Propane as an explosive.
These Jackasses manage not to kill themselves and got a few good blasts , the one using a 5 gallon tank on a stump in the lake went off very nicely.
A one gallon tank actually out did that in comparative blast effect.
The 100 gallon tank doesn't look like much till you see the scale markings.
It appears that many smaller containers rupturing simultateously would produce a greater blast than one large tank. Just as grains of blackpowder produce an explosion while a large lump of black powder burns like a rocket motor.

Read the transcript and tell me if this meets your high standards for truthful reporting and isightful commentary. Are you not be embarassed by this man's performance last night? Do you really not see how he tarnishes the brand?
The most absurd, illogical and laughable rhetoric appears on the hard left or hard right blogs when ever there is a news story appears which seams to directly contradict their most cherished beliefs. Instead of awknowledging the complexity of our world and the contradictions which are part of history they try to some how twist the facts, deny reality and somehow make everything fit their ideology.

Dear Jamie, Chula Vista, CA ,

Spent some time with some good friends and told them what I had done on the blog.

I told them that I had found myself getting progressively more "snarky" and decided that I wasn't helping anyone including myself by staying. I realized
that I had become more focused on how people expressed themselves than what they were saying and had had the arrogance to presume I was in a position to remark on that.

I told them that, just as I had that revelation about myself (and was feeling very self righteous about it), fate stepped in to slap me down as only it can slap a person down for such arrogance. I was presented with a discussion topic for which I felt entirely too much passion. That will always be the test for me - how to handle myself when the issue is of such deep personal meaning.

I really blew it. I let all the rage that had been building up over a lot of different things boil over into a post addressed to you with what was probably the nastiest writing I've ever done in my life.

I was so embarrassed and, if I could have, I would have grabbed that item out of the blogosphere before it posted. (One lesson here is that anytime self righteousness shows up at your door step, the asshole factor will be right behind it.)

My friends asked what I had done about this situation. I, of course, said I had done nothing. After being roundly berated for being the coward that I am and for having, evidently, left any character I once owned in a packing box, they asked what I was going to do now? Nothing like good friends to tell you
when you are being an idiot.

So - I got on ebay and bought myself some character to replace that which I'd lost somewhere along the line. The packaging indicates that the more I use it the stronger it will grow. I'm hoping that is true. I also got myself a miniscule amount of courage in the same purchase.

If you don't mind, I'm gonna test these things on you. (You won't believe how much I am sweating while being on this blog. I didn't know if I'd be able to pull it up since I'd not been able to do so until now.)

Ok. Here goes. Deep breath.

I humbly apologize for my behavior in last week's posting to you. No matter what my own circumstances, opinions, or beliefs may be, I had no right to express myself as I did. I hope you can forgive me and have fonder memories of my time on the blog.

Murrow, never known for relaxation, has been spinning in his grave mightily since 2000, I suspect.
In few other times since his death has his sign off "Good night and good luck" been more appropriate.

That is an odd way of putting it, also he had five deferments last time I checked, and before that they were saying four deferments. I guess the story changes about everytime its brought up.

As for service as an Interceptor pilot in the height of the Cold War, I don't think it would be wise to dis any of those pilots to their face.
The Soviets were bringing Tupolev Bear Bombers into Cuba and had planned to build bases in South America as well. The Bear was capable of firing air to ground nuclear missles with a range of ninety miles if memory serves. The Interceptor pilots in order to score a kill would have to use afterburners the whole trip (burns fuel like mad) then engage heavily armed bombers and most likely mig escorts with a very good chance of having to ditch in shark infested waters when the deed was done.
Just before Bush's performance began to fail he'd been a volunteer in high altitude experiments, exposed to near vaccum while monitored by airforce doctors. Its only speculation but I figure he had lost his edge due to the after effects of those experiments, which would explain his returning to flying the trainers.
Either way the F-102s were begining to crash on landings due to metal fatigue of the landing gear. The replacement, the F-106, would have required significant retraining and the other replacement craft such as the F-4 were very different aircraft all together.
Bush no doubt could have done more, but then again a whole lot of others did nothing to serve our country in those days.

As far as government files go, I sent for some medical records once and my doctor got a letter saying I'd been killed in a hotel fire in Atlanta, I'd never been to Atlanta, and I certainly wasn't killed in a fire, that I can remember anyway.
Later when they half assed corrected their books they sent another letter saying that since they thought I was dead my medical records were now lost in a warehouse in Virgina. Probably in a cardboard box sitting on the crate holding the Ark Of the Covenent right next to the jar holding Hitler's brain.

With regards to voting on another bill (or in your case Mr. President, vetoing another bill) to begin bringing our troops home, let's try doing a little role-playing beforehand.

All of you men and women, go home. Take a good look at your children; especially those of you with college-aged children, (and yes; that includes you Mr. President) which is the age of most of those in Iraq.

Imagine sending them to Baghdad instead of Brown.

Instead of you praying they WILL be on the dean's list, praying that they WON'T be on the injured or casualty list.

Instead of helping them find a job after college, helping them walk, talk, or deal with post traumatic stress after a battlefield injury.

Instead of receiving an email requesting more money for food, receiving an email requesting better body armor and stronger bomb-resistent vehicles.

Instead of opening the door to a surprise visit from your child, opening the door to a "surprise" visit from the military casualty notification team.

Instead of visiting them on Parent's Day, visiting them at Walter Reed, or at the cemetary.

I want to begin by stating that I am against the War in Iraq. I believed Colin Powell when he went before the UN and claimed Saddam had WMD’s, like congress and a good percentage of the American people, but we eventually found out we had been conned. What is so outrageous about the breech in trust that Bush and Cheney committed upon this country and the world is that he made a decision that administrations for decades to come will have to deal with the mess he has created.

The reason that the troops cannot be withdrawn with the ease that many antiwar advocates would like to see is that the problem is not that simple. The invasion destroyed much of Iraq’s infrastructure, internal security mechanisms, and a neutralizing force to balance out the influence of Iran in the region. If we were to immediately pull our troops out people would starve, there would be mass ethnic cleansing, a refugee problem for neighboring countries, and a government that would likely end up with close ties to Iran.

All of this would provide yet another black eye for the image of America in the region. It does not matter that this was the policy of one administration; the people of the region see us all as Americans and would blame America as a whole, not just a few neo-con nuts.

This is why I believe most members of congress are afraid to pull the trigger on cutting funding for the war. The republican suggestion that cutting war funding undermines the troops is only the tip of the iceberg. The long view of what will happen in the Middle East if we totally abandon a troop presence in a destabilized Iraq must also be a factor in their decisions.

If memory serves me, most all of the 9/11 terrorists were from Saudi Arabia. We have not been able to keep terrorists from flowing back and forth across the borders in Iraq so if they want to come here, they have plenty of opportunity to do so,(airport security is too busy stopping women with little children carrying sippy cups of water.) If anyone believes that we won't be attacked again just because we are "over there" (ummm... President Bush...Fox News... ,etc., etc.,) you also have to believe Paris Hilton is a member of Mensa.

It makes much more sense to me to have our troops OVER HERE to protect us if/when the terrorists come OVER HERE rather than having our troops OVER THERE.

I agree with Larry Johnson's assertion that terrorism, on its own, is not the biggest threat to the US--or to the world. Nuclear proliferation, and the possibility that nuclear weapons already in existence could be obtained by rogue governments and terrorists, is a far larger danger to human survival. And with our own government, including the current crop of Republican contenders for the presidency, seemingly willing to use nuclear weapons pre-emptively against Iran, we must acknowledge that we live in a new era in which the old prescritions against nuclear destruction (the "mutually assured destruction" concept) no longer protect anyone against full-out nuclear war.

9/11 was a horrendous event, with thousands of casualties; nuclear war could end human existence. Johnson is merely pointing out that legitimate concerns about terrorism should not be overblown, lest we fail to see even worse danger in front of us.

I would also point out that the opinions of guests on Countdown are not required to reflect the views of the host or of the network. Nor do they simply serve as a handy "straw man" for others to knock down. Keith Olbermann is not Billo, and Countdown viewers are not looking for a show that accepts, without question, the over-simplified view of the world purveyed by the Bush administration and its apologists and supporters.

Both 9/11 and the London story also suggests that the best weapons against both skillful and inept terror attacks involve gathering intelligence and vigilance.

To the extent that government officials exaggerate attempts at producing terror, they are simply finishing the job that the terrorists (whether success or not) have attempted to do: instill terror in people in order to make them abandon democratic principles.

Hey, Linda, thanks for your concern, but unless my brain reading comprehension gas tank is critically low (or I read the wrong post), I don't see any reference to me. I stand by what I said above. I enjoy reading what EVERYONE has to say, whether I agree with it or not.

Slightly along these lines, I finished reading Craig Crawford's ATTACK THE MESSENGER on Saturday. I highly recommend it. He actually suggests reading and/or watching news that you KNOW you're going to disagree with. This activity can do many things, including getting some insight on what "the other side" thinks, testing the strength of your own beliefs, etc. I try - notice I said "try" - to stomach listening to "comedian" Rush Limbaugh for a while at least a couple of times a week. Most of the time, he just ends up making me laugh because he's so *&^%^$n' ridiculous. So, I guess he is a comedian! :)

I'm grateful for everyone here and that I have an opportunity to participate.

Just a couple of points related to a previous thread - postings from 6/29/07 & 6/30/07. Non-Muslims find great pleasure in maligning Prophet Mohammed, citing his marriage to Aishah at the age of 9 and calling him a pedophile. This kind of disrespect is extremely disturbing since we, Muslims, never denigrate Jesus, ever. To us he is one of our greatest prophets including Abraham, Moses, Noah etc. Judaism, Christianity and Islam share the same prophets, is it too much to expect that some respect is shown to our Prophet? But I digress, Prophet Mohammed was married at age 25 to a widow, he remained married to her for 25 years. After her death he married a number of times mainly for political alliances and to give protection to widows. His marriage to Aishah, there are varying reports of her actual age, was proposed by Aisha's father, Abu Bakr, as a means to cement the alliance between Prophet Mohammed and his friend Abu Bakr. Also, Aishah being exceptionally intelligent was also the means to later educate the followers on religious matters and also to remove beyond a shadow of a doubt the prevailing concept about the inferiority of women in society. In the Arab culture prevailing 1428 years ago, marriage for girls at such a young age was the norm not an exception. Sitting in the 21st century it's rather ludicrous to be judging something that we have no experience about. A quick mention about the cartoons, Islam does not allow the physical depiction of any of the Prophets, it would only be a rendition of artists based on pure imagination after all. You have numerous statues/pictures etc of Jesus and you think that's how he actually looked? If Jesus is depicted in cartoons or offensive caricatures, you may be open minded enough not to be offended by them but truthfully, it is extremely offensive to me. Islam is a great religion, if you study it you'll hopefully learn some tolerance but if you cannot please leave it alone. Don't think some fanatics are the representation of what Islam is about. To quote from Sura Kafirun (The unbelievers - 109): Say, oh unbelievers, I worship not that which ye worship; nor worship ye that which I worship; and I shall not worship that which ye worship; nor will you worship that which I worship; unto you your religion, and unto me my religion."

His materialistic mental processes could not allow him to state with honesty that he believed the story of Jesus was true as historical fact. The lowest age of Consent I know off is 14. While its possible for a girl of 14 to be mature enough physically to have sex in a more or less normal fashion, its really not cool at all.
I've never heard of sex with a nine year old being acceptable in any but the most primitive societies.

Ok, lets try this...What did 9-11 have to do with Iraq? The same thing that Pearl Harbor had to do with the Soloman Islands...Nothing. In case you still don't understand...We had to fight the enemy where they were. So the poor innocent people of the Solomans are the same people in Iraq today.
And don't say Saddam & sons were swell guys who didn't murder a million people, because they did.
And don't forget that Saddam Hussein used weapons of mass destruction on his own people, remember the 5000 Kurds who died in one day from Saddams chemical weapon stock pile.
And lastly, when will people understand history? I mean liberals like Neville Chamberlin (UK prime minister) in WWll appeased our enemies (Hitler) with phony treaties that meant nothing. Ya ok, that worked right up untill the day Hitler started bombing the UK.
Fast forward to now...End the war? The new Hitler in Iran is building a nuclear weapon to quote "wipe Isreal off of the map." Or wipe YOU off of the map. Ya right, I'd end the war right now with a few bunker buster nukes on the 21 Iranian nuclear sites.

You've just given every reason to believe that Terrorism is in fact the greatest threat to the World of today.
Iran is a State run by Islamic Fanatics and they are rapidly becoming a Nuclear threat. Not because they may one day have the Bomb but because a State run by Islamic Fanatics is many times more likely to use one than any Western Nation not already embroiled in a World War.
Pakistan and India have had nuclear weapons for decades as has Egypt and possibly Israel and a number of other states whose Governments look at Islamic fanaticism as a threat to their own Nation as well as others. These States are unlikely to use nukes unless attacked with nukes, or on the point of being over run by a superior Invading force.
As the AQ Khan nuke proliferation ring has proven constant vigilance and stern measures are necessary in order to keep the Djinn in the bottle.

I'm reminded of an article on the mythology of the Djinn in the Bottle.
It made a good case for the Djinn representing forbidden and highly dangerous knowledge, since there are historical references to such records being sealed in jars and either buried or cast into the sea.

Mass murder? Speaking of mass murder, as stated above...The Iranians are building a nuclear weapon right now to use on you. So you can go on cheering on the Iranian "Sharia Law" enemy everynight, or you can get on board and cheer on America to win the war, hopefully without a few of our cities getting nuked.
