NO ONE in the entire world knows how to game the legal system like this bunch of criminals in the WH.

I am not a conspiracy theorists but here is what I think about this.

1) At any time up to trial (and maybe even up to sentencing) Mr. Libby could have come clean and admitted his obstruction. He did not.

2) At any time during the investigation, trial, and sentencing, Mr. Libby could have been in contact with the WH who could have told him to go ahead and tell the whole truth. They did not.

3) Ms. Libby made a startling comment after sentencing that Mr. Libby would not go down alone.

4) The administration allowed the appeals to go forward to give other Rs the chance to reverse either the guilty decision or the sentencing but these Rs actually upheld the law.

5) Mr. Libby will spend not one day in jail.

That adds up in my view to some powerful knowledge that is being protected. There are no words harsh enough in my mind to denounce this whole administration. This very case is why, in my opinion, Mr. Gonzales has held the support of Mr. Bush in the face of absolute demonstration of unworthiness. He needed to have a schill to get a legal rebuttal in place.

Something rotten in Denmark? No. Something putrid indeed in Washington DC.

Breaking News: Bush Pardons Libby

SH-Westfield. All Scooter Libby had to do was tell the truth, and say where he learned about Valerie Plame's identity. It is also undisputed that he did leak her name to the NYT reporter, Judith Miller. She just never wrote about it. He did leak, and he did lie to the grand jury. I am also tired of so many people saying he was such a dedicated, smart and well-educated man. So what if he went to Yale. Another person that works in the White House went there too. He was idiotic enough to think that Patrick Fitzgerald would believe his Tim Russert story, rather than say he learned it from his boss. All he had to do was tell the truth. He was afraid, and couldn't handle the truth. (OK so I borrowed that from Jack Nicholson and "A Few Good Men"). He deserved his time. The President also didn't go far enough to please his right wing buddies, by leaving the fine and conviction in place. Or will that be dealt with in a successive pardon after the '08 election. Hopefully, Libby's bar associations act quickly to suspend him from the practice of law, thus forcing another capitulation prior to the election. What a sad day for America. when will this ever end. If the only result of the Bush administration is the destruction of the Republican Party, then it might be worth it. Otherwise, we are paying way too high a price for this, in terms of our world stature, and constituional protections. Why not pardon the low-ranking soldiers who were carrying out the orders for torture in Abu Ghraib. Why not show some real courage?

Breaking News: Bush Pardons Libby

On the morning of May 6, 1997, Governor George W. Bush signed his name to a confidential three-page memorandum from his legal counsel, Alberto R. Gonzales, and placed a bold black check mark next to a single word: DENY. It was the twenty-ninth time a death-row inmate's plea for clemency had been denied in the twenty-eight months since Bush had been sworn in. In this case Bush's signature led, shortly after 6:00 P.M. on the very same day, to the execution of Terry Washington, a mentally retarded thirty-three-year-old man with the communication skills of a seven-year-old. Let me get this straight, you can't save a mentally challanged person from death, but you can save a friend from a harsh sentance?

Breaking News: Bush Pardons Libby

The inmates are in charge of the asylum in Washington. The very fact that I don't at all feel comfortable that that smooth transition will occur is representative of how uneasy I am about the way this administration has flouted the constitution.

2) In addition, even if they do leave peacefully, the precedents set by the behavior of this administration and, to date, no formal accounting by the justice system of that behavior, is, in essence, a de facto approval of the behavior. We will see it again in future administrations where it will be even more aggregious. (I looked that up in an online dictionary and couldn't find a correct spelling!!)

Re this specific case - Mr. Libby chose his sentencing by not ever coming clean. At any point, he could have mitigated the severity judged on him. He chose not too. Therefore, in my opinion, "compassion" had nothing to do with Mr. Bush's decision to commute jail time. The knowledge that we are asserting that Mr. Libby is protecting probably has little to do with the Plame case and everything to do with keeping Mr. Cheney out of jail. That is, of course, only an opinion.

Breaking News: Bush Pardons Libby

SH-

You stated "Whatever happened to the values of compassion and love?".

Why didn't we compassionately, yet sternfully, forgive those who attacked us on 9-11? Why haven't we (as true conservative Ron Paul suggested) looked at our own foreign policy for the past century and realized that we pissed off the crazy people? (Most people know how to deal with crazy people... stay away from them and don't piss them off, especially if they are powerful and have fanatical followers willing to die for them.)

We should be fighting terrorism with Law Enforcement and Intelligence, not Militarily against militant religious fanatics whom have no allegiance to a specific area on some map. This is the evolution of Guerrella Warfare, and we're fighting it akin to the British during our Revolutionary War.

Why didn't the Bush Administration use their values of compassion and love to respectfully disagree with Ambassador Wilson's report that Iraq sought Yellowcake? Why did Cheney look for ways to discredit the report? Why, during the testimony of outed CIA agent Valerie Plame, did a Republican question her about her political affiliation rather than ask about the facts surrounding the TREASONOUS ACTIONS that nobody has been charged with?

Bush said he'd unite, he'd be a compassionate conservative, that we weren't in the Nation-building business, and that the rule of law would be used to fight terrorism. He seems to have done the exact opposite, while using the fears of terrorism, gay equality, and a judicial system would prosecute Republicans in order to build his support base.

Of course we're pissed off. Bush, with the help of Neo-Cons, are trying to build an Autocracy. This is like giving hush hush money to someone so they keep quiet. What is next, who is going to be swimming with the fishes. To think I would have had a good laugh seeing Scooter in an orange suit. Now, impeaching that VP " Dickie" is next. KO, interviewed John Dean and he mentioned that despite Bushie not letting anyone know this sooner or run it by them, he has the ultimate power to do this. Just like the other power he abuses and uses, so goes this sentence. IMPEACMENT IS THE ONLY WAY, WE THE PEOPLE OF THE GREAT USA CAN HAVE ANY SATISFACTION!!! Who do you tink will pay the tab of $250k? It is all taken care of just like the attorney fees Scooter racked up. This is a disheartening situation but I saw it coming and I thought it would have had it on July 4th, I guess the fireworks came early. My country is dying.
Tru M., Cleveland, Ohio (Sent Monday, July 02, 2007 7:32 PM)

Tru - thank you. Of all of the really fine comments expressed here, yours says it all in a couple of words.

I had just heard the news as I was waiting for my sister to get here to go to dinner. Posted on the previous thread and then saw this one and posted again (it ended up being the first one too).

My initial reaction, emotional as it was, still rings true. LOL in fact the part I put in caps to emphacize it got quoted by some NeoConJob here as "journalizm". It ain't! It's just the first reaction of a pissed off patriotic American who thinks that this administration had sunk about as low as they can go. Nope - plenty more bottom left.

This goes beyond arrogance or swagger or incompetence or cronyism.

Mr. President - this was your EMPLOYEE! He did as he was told by outing a covert agent and her brass plate company because you and your administration were being embarrassed by the truth told by her husband. Mr. Libby LIED about it. Was he ordered to lie - to obstruct the investigation? We'll never know.

Mr. President: What's to stop you or Fourth-Branch-of-Government Cheney from personnaly ordering any employee at any time to perform any illegal act that you want and then let them off the hook? Even Ronald Reagan didn't have the balls to do that for his Iran-Contra thugs - Bush I issued all those pardons. What's to stop you from ordering murder of political foes? What's to stop you from from doing anything?

My friends, have we seen the start of the United Dictatorship of America? This is the kind of stuff we for which we condemn the authoritarian leaders of other countries.

I thought I'd feel better after a nice dinner, but I guess not.

Breaking News: Bush Pardons Libby

As an American History teacher, when I teach the Constitution next year, must I teach that there are 4 Branches?...The "Interchangeable Executive/Legislative Branch" according to DICK ? I am truly frightened by his/her ramblings on the law. This individual thinks the President and his cronies are above the law. What surprises all of you? Just how did Bush get elected? (This was a rhetorical question) I will opine anyway; With the likes of those who actually believe that there are one set of laws for the friends of the Executive Branch and a set for the rest of us. As a 9-11 survivor, I was lied to consistently by these corrupt creatures. Didn't you expect this behavior from Bush? This is mild in comparision to the lies he provided for the 9-11 survivors; all of us are either seriously ill or dying. SH of Westfield, NJ will never get it. So, my advice stop giving this lunatic credance and stop responding to his/her ramblings. Please!! I beg of you. Now for the "other side" of this "commutation" coin. All of the "lawless and disorder" Republican candidates, especially Fred Thompson, the wannabe Reagan, has hailed this decision and has paid heavily for Scooter's defense and, of course, post-defense. Rudy, Mitt et al, those staunch law-abing lawmakers are providing standing ovations to their fearless uber leader Bush. So, just sit back and watch as the Republicans commit political suicide. I'm just salivating like Pavlov's Dogs. This is a GIFT. Enjoy! I envision a huge Democratic majority in 2008 and a Democratic President. Thank You Bush for another revolting act as this country's worst executive. This one just may stick. average people do not respond negatively to "secret signing ceremonies, denial of "writs of habeaus corpus" eg. As long as the Dems keep it simple, I think this one act will be a keeper. Again, leave the witless SH to his/her delusions.

Breaking News: Bush Pardons Libby

Mr. Fenton: I am so incredibly sorry for your loss.

All of these people that continue to support Libby, Bush, etc., are clueless when it comes down to the reality of all the lies and the covering up of the lies. Unfortunately, your son paid the ultimate price for these lies.

Again, I'm truly sorry on the death of your son.

PEACE!

Breaking News: Bush Pardons Libby

O say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O’er the LAND OF THE FREE and the home of the brave?

Ahhh, now I understand.

Breaking News: Bush Pardons Libby

By the way, my younger sister, who doesn't know anything about politics ("too complicated") and has never voted even once in her life (she's 55 now) is madder about this than I am. She "gets" this. As she told me: "This man lies and gets comvicted and his boss who ordered the lie stops him from going to jail".

This IS something that people will "get". It's not too complicated.

The Repugnikants can no longer call themselves the "Law and Order" Party. They just gave that up. Forever.

Remember: the fish rots from the head down even if it's a stupid head.

BTW: Libby's pardon is probably already prepared and waiting for January 2009 and will be done in a similarly cowardly way.

Breaking News: Bush Pardons Libby

Mr. John Fenton, hopefully this won't offend you, and my deepest apologies if I do. However, I think everybody needs to know your sons story, and what you and his mother went through following your sons injury and subsequent death.

No one on here has to believe me or anything I say in regard to my brothers and my military life, however, I suggest that you google Matthew Fenton. There is no way to deny this person existed, and that his parents and sister exist today. You also cannot deny this fathers pain.

I pray that my family never goes through what the Fentons and 3,583 other families have. Please go and read the reality.

PEACE!

Breaking News: Bush Pardons Libby

"July 2nd, 2007- Another day that will live in infamy".
Tru M, Cleveland, I figured after reading your comment: "9-11-Help! We shall overcome because James Russell Lowell is right: Truth forever on the scaffold, wrong forever on the thrown, yet that scaffold sways the future and behind the dim unknown standeth God within the shadows keeping watch above his own. We shall overcome because the Bible is right: You shall reap what you sow. We shall overcome. Deep in my heart I do believe we shall overcome.

"And with this faith we will go out and adjourn the councils of despair and bring new light into the dark chambers of pessimism. And we will be able to rise from the fatigue of despair to the buoyancy of hope. They heard all the testimony, and were "enabled" and instructed by the law and we the American people to make a determination of gulit or innocence. It does not matter what you or I think about the facts or lack thereof regarding Libby's guilt. He was found guilty by those selected to represent the law and this country. "THAT IS A FACT". Bush did not commute Libby's jail sentence because he said he felt he was innocent based on any new evidence or facts. He commuted Libby's jail sentence stating because he felt the sentence was to harsh and excessive. Therein lies an admission by Bush himself that Libby was guilty of perjury. If not then why not a full pardon including elimination of the 2 years probation and the $250,000 fine. And the sentence was the same that others have received for perjury and that are on the books. The presiding judge did not add to what the law already calls for in such cases. The judge followed the law in the sentencing. So screw your facts SH as to whether Libby was guilty or not. That is your opinion as well as others no matter what they believe. The fact is (and this is how the American people will see it), is that this President just told the judge, the jury and the American people to stick it up their ass.

Breaking News: Bush Pardons Libby

Roy - as an Australian you need to understand that this is a country where Repugnikants are more care more about protecting the flag itself than in protecting the country that it represents. Their motto should be: protect the flag; screw the country.

Breaking News: Bush Pardons Libby

SH- I'm going to put out a really over simplified analogy here: Yes- Bush had the legal wherewithall to do what he did, but the question the bloggers are asking is- 'but whas it the right thing to do?'. If I kick my tottering, feeble 89 year old father out of my house, I have the legal right to do that. The question would be- 'But is it the right thing to do?'. Get it??

Breaking News: Bush Pardons Libby

Amidst all the hysteria over the Commutation of Libby
(sounds like the title of a French novel), we omit asking the one important question that should be asked.
Why does the President have complete unfettered Pardon powers for any and all reasons? Is this not
"judicating from the Throne" (versus "Legislating from the Bench"). What purposes does this power serve other that to make a mockery of the seperation of powers? Presidents of both parties have shown time and again their inablitity to use this power in a reasoned and restrained manner. It is time for a serious debate whether to cutail or remove this power.
I cannot see for the life of me why it is there in the way it is. I would be interested in hearing explanations at to why.

Breaking News: Bush Pardons Libby

Here come the terrorist warnings... That is the one that gets you prosecuted and the prison time. Fitzgerald was furious because due to Scooter's Obstructionist behavior it was as if " Libby threw sand in the eyes of the prosecution's ability to charge those (Rove&Armitage) for the underlying charge of the treasonous and National Security Risk of the "outing" of a covert CIA agent. Perjury, in this and most cases usually does not even get prosecuted for either the "haves" or "have-nots". Just a little FYI regarding SH. I only wish you and others who enter this site would cease and desist from attempting to "educate" this "challenged" individual. I did not like Clinton's pardons, Carters pardons and I don't like this commutation of jail time by Bush for Libby (that will end up being a full pardon). And I am not criticizing Bush in the belief that somewhow he is going to cause the sky to fall. I would be criticizing a Democrat if they were in office and pardoning Libby. I have no bias against any because they happen to be Dem or Republican. But I do have a bias. I have a bias against career politicians who are corrupt and who have no idea what it takes to properly represent the wishes of the American people. You can't tell me that Bush spent endless nights studying this case or the laws behind the case in order to determine whether to pardon Libby or not. He may have been advised but only on what he could get away with regarding Presidential pardons, not whether it was right or wrong or if the sentence was too excessive (which it was not by past precedent of the law). And when that occurs and 80+% of the American people feel otherwise (with as much knowledge of the details I'm sure as Bush himself) then yes, I will criticize the President, no matter his political affilitation. Your problem SH, is that if this had been a Dem as Carter or Clinton and under the same cicumstances they pardoned someone as Libby with several months left in office, you would be screaming bloody murder. And if you deny it you're lying. At least I am willing to criticize corruption and lack of proper representation no matter which side of the isle they are seated. You seem to forget this is our governement, our laws (by and for the people), and it was our people who sat on that jury and convicted Libby. I have no room for a King in my minds eye of what America is supposed to represent, Dem or Republican King. And yes, based on Bush's general attitude with the American people on many other issues throughout his tenure, including the Iraq mess, he has been telling the people since he was first elected that he is going to do what he wants to do - so stick it up your ass. He is a spoiled child that never had to work hard for much and has to have his way or he becomes flippant, angry and rebellious. I would bet my life that any 10 or more professional psychological profiles completed by honest Dem and Republican leaning Psychologists would tell you that this is Bush's personaility and character flaws.

D. Kent: Thanks for the advice and pointing out that it was obstruction of juctice. And I usually do play down, ignore or respond with less anger to those who accuse people of being blinded by party loyalty when they too are blinded by their own party loyalty. If you have followed this Blog for months now you would know that you were preaching to the choir in this regard. But I won't take a condescending attitude as that presented by SH who thinks he needs to tell me what I can and cannot believe in. I would not take the same from someone on ther other side as well.

Breaking News: Bush Pardons Libby

SH: I think CDB makes a pretty good case above as to why this President as failed to properly represent the people of this country. I am horrified that such an absolute and unreviewable power (except in cases of impeachment) would be found in the honorable US Constitution."
--SH

OK, interesting, you believe that a case of impeachment is the ONLY time the executive can pardon someone, exactly opposite to the constitution which says in Article 2 section 2 paragraph 1 that "and he shall have power to grant reprieves and pardons for offenses against the United States, except in cases of impeachment." So..if we impeach the VP he can pardon him before he gets impeached. OR he's impeached so Dick becomes pres. Wow quite a stance SH

"Please reread my posts, C.A. I asked in numerous, and humorous ways for people to have perspective about Bush's actions."
--SH

Well I did re-read your posts and let me tell you what you are missing. Libby was convicted of obstruction of justice and you agree obviously. Bush left him with a fine that in comparison to a median income would be $2,000 maybe, and 5 min a month visit with a probation officer. All that (that's written sarcasm), for Intentionally, and willfully lying to the American people, and Obstructing Justice in a case that many consider Treason. The refusal to tell the TRUTH about the intentional outing of an American CIA officer. Yes he has the power by law, laws that are of the people, by the people, and for the people. Second point, yes you did offer "numerous, and humorous ways for people to have perspective about Bush's actions." Numerous was your necessity, and excuse me humorous ways? Maybe this isn't explained best in a "humorous" fashion. Please understand why your attempts to enlighten us with your humor may not inspire us. Besides if you want humor consider that the fines given out in NASCAR this past week was $200,000 for a two front fenders that were less that an 1/8" out of specification. That's humor.

"Claims of the sky falling,"
--SH

No one said it. Exaggerating.

"a monarchy,a coup or the end of Western democratic principles"

That's why we are actively discussing these very serious issues, to prevent it from getting anywhere near that. And coup? exaggerating again.

"are hyperbole."

noun defined in Websters as extravagant exaggeration. You exaggerated the comments of others and then denounced them claiming their folly was that THEY exaggerated...?

"Your claim that Bush is thumbing his nose at the jury is also hyperbole because any pardon or commutation does exactly what you are claiming, it changes the results of a jury's verdict."

Yikes, we are extravagantly exaggerating the situation because every one them is exactly like this??? Really your argument. Good grief.

"I hope you are consistent and yelled to high heaven when Clinton pardoned Marc Rich or when Carter pardoned CONVICTED draft dodgers (what about those juries?)."

Fair question. I admit I was 19 years old when Clinton pardoned those guys. I was was entering engineering school and politics were not on my mind at the time. In retrospect I regret that part because it would have helped me see this president for who he was and still is years ago. And Carter, I was born in 79 but in fairness the question was not directed at me. However, the argument is still only this then..."OK this is real bad, but um you guys were wrong about something a decade or two ago too...maybe..wait no there's the next post....ouch he disapproved too..hmmmmm"

"Your prism in seeing everything as a sign that crimes have occurred in The West Wing is a voluntary choice and you have every right to peer through it. "

Amen. And what are you implying with the word prism anyway"

"I also have a brain"

It that your prism then?

"and can see exaggeration and bias and guess what, that is exactly what Rush Olbermann and types like him, market. Enjoy the Special Comment tonight. I am sure MSNBC and Rush Olbermann's advertisers appreciate your love of the raw meat, all the way to the bank."

Yeah, it sucks that advertisers reach more people when 60% of American's believe the president shouldn't have pardoned, sorry commuted Libby's sentence, and 1 man in network news has the balls to call for resignation for an entire presidency of failure. (See points 1 through 90) and I did miss several. And get ready, he won't be alone.

Breaking News: Bush Pardons Libby

CDB
" The refusal to tell the TRUTH about the intentional outing of an American CIA officer. "

Nope, the failure of the Prosecution to provide any evidence of intention in the action of Richard Armitage is the fault of Fitzgerald himself.
Libby didn't testify to the order of events that Fitzgerald wanted him too, theres no evidence that Libby actually with held any such information. Theres no evidence that Armitage acted with Criminal Intent.
Therefore there is no evidence that Libby's testimony whether accurate or not can have impeded the investigation of the motives of a man who had already been granted immunity by Fitzgerald before any indication of his guilt or innocence had even been considered.
Fitzgerald screwed up the investigation at the very begining and needed to fry someone on any charge he could cook up in order to divert attention away from his own incompetence.

The Irregularities in Jury selection and the court's prejudicial action in disallowing exculpitory evidence which would have impeached the credibility of the prosecutions witnesses should result in the conviction being overturned on appeal.

What the Prosecution wants is not automatically the truth whether they believe it is or not.
Fitzgerald obtained a conviction on extremely weak evidence in the form of testimony and inconclusive and contradictory hand written notes.
No physical evidence, no recorded conversations, no witneseses that could confirm the accuracy of the testimony of the Prosecution's Witnesses.

Breaking News: Bush Pardons Libby

Why not take a poll of who has the larger cajones, Martha Stewart or Scooter Libby?

Breaking News: Bush Pardons Libby

Why not take a poll of who has the larger cajones, Martha Stewart or Scooter Libby?

Breaking News: Bush Pardons Libby

After the last presidential election a British headlines read, "They did it again".
