Didn't one of our great NEWSHOLE bloggers already post this?! I already watched it and fought the urge to upchuck.

As I said, even if you showed this to our Dictator-Wanna-Be, he would say that 9/11 changed everything and if you disagree with what's going on now, you're "soft on terror." Besides, the current occupants at the White House believe they've been called to these actions by the good Lord himself, so NO ONE can EVER tell them they might - just might - be wrong. "They" are the good guys, so whatever actions are deemed necessary by them are not subject to negotiation, "quaint" conventions, or debate.

If Mr. Cheney had this philosophy at this juncture in time, why did he switch to a more war-like stance to take out Saddam Hussein ten years later? Were these the words of a pro-Bush 41 as opposed to a Pro-Bush 43 and what transpired to change 180 degrees since 41. Cheney did not have to be a signatory on PNAC unless Cheney was lying in 1994 but telling his truth in 2002. Judging from his fascial expression, it apperas that Cheney is abiding by his own sense of rationale in '94. Could it be that the Neocons got to this man as well and perchance convinced this guy that Iraq would be a walk in the park or did Mr. Cheney's religion change since leaving that of a religionist to that of a war-igionist, war being the guidelines of this Bush 43 administration. I wonder who was duped in this matter?

Watch "The Power Of Nightmares" it is a 3 part series by the bbc. It can be watched on line for free. It explains why these guys will say anything that is momentarily useful to get what they want in the long run. It also explains how incredibly dillusional there thinking is and how they rely on the 20% who likes to be told what to think. During the first gulf war the soviet union could still be used as a boogieman albeit a weaking one, now we need new boogiemen to save us from ourselves.

He was obviously the CEO of one of the nation's largest oilfield service companies for a good reason (as far as his corporate proprietary skills were concerned, that is). Oilfield companies are known for (among other things) their stubborn, hard-headed approach to business and Bush and Cheney have definitely carried <that> into their political careers.
The United States of America is a 230+ year-old representative democracy that deserves and depends upon an adequately and sufficiently informed electorate for its survival. This administration's "corporate proprietary" lock on information has denied this country's electorate the access to the information they deserve and require to make informed choices at the ballot box. As a taxpaying voting citizen, if I am refused the information I need to make a quality informed decision, I am going to be highly disinclined to support ANY administration or government entity that denies me information I feel is necessary to make the kinds of decisions that I need to make. Bill, I must point out to you that the "representative" part of our government only means that we get to vote on who becomes a senator or representative, NOT on the president! According to the rules of the Electoral College procedures, the people in the Electoral College only have to be "guided" by the majority of the state opinion. If they disagree with the majority, they are free to vote however they want. Whoever the president is, is clearly not up to us. Of course, one must consider the fact that the Congress members are a majority vote, which usually leaves a sizeable minority without representation. Part of the problem with an "all or nothing" sort of electoral system.

Somebody hasn't been listening to the news or reading government reports. Our invasion of Iraq had nothing whatsoever to do with 9/11, the intelligence used to make the case for Saddam having an active WMD program was "inappropriately manipulated" by Douglas Feith and the events of 9/11 were used as a "Pearl Harbor-like event" to prosecute a war that had been discussed and planned for years prior to Mr. Bush being elected and to 9/11.

The same reasons for not taking out Saddam that existed in 1994 existed in 2003. Cheney stated them quite well.

Padre, you aren't listening to your President or to real news. Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11. The people who funded the attacks, who planned the attacks and who carried them out were SAUDI ARABIANS who belong to a specific radical Islamic sect called Wahhabi Sunni. They HATED Saddam as much as he HATED them. They considered him an infidel. Over 50% of the small number of foreign fighters in Iraq are SAUDI ARABIANS.

We haven't been attacked again because they haven't wanted to . . . they will attack again, if and when they want. If you believe Mr. Bush and Mr. Cheney are responsible for us not being attacked since 9/11, then, conversely, you have to believe that Bill Clinton kept us safe after the first WTC attack in 1993 (3 weeks or so after he was inaugurated) until September 2001. Somebody has been listening to way too much propaganda . . . the things you stated above about Bill Clinton had nothing to do with 9/11 and had NOTHING to do with Iraq. Iraq never had a thing to do with Islamic terrorism, WMDs or anything else this White House has spewed. It was a pre-planned, experimental war to test a theory by a bunch of self-described "intellectuals," the majority of whom were in the first Bush cabinet: Wolfowitz, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Perle, Feith, Bolton, Frum (coined the phrase, "Axis of Evil" at least a year prior to 9/11) . . . many more.

I'm all for unity, but supporting the illicit activities of this administration will not bring unity, it will bring further destruction of our way of life which was the stated goal of the terrorists who attacked us on 9/11. Let's add a bit of sanity to this conversation. At face value this does look like a flip flop but situations change and the same people who want to castigate Cheney have most certainly flip flopped on their positions on issues in the past when situations changed.

The big change in this case was 911, a recognition (possibly for the first time) that terrorists can do damage to this country, and a concern about the development of WMDs in Iraq. Everyone now recognizes that we didn't find any WMDs - but the reality is that the reason we didn't know that was due to the dismantling off our intelligence capability years before when Democrats decided that the world was such a nice place that we didn't need to have "spys" working for us. As a result our intelligence gathering was severely diminished and now, even though we are working to rebuild it, it will take years to do.

There were a lot of politicians in America and other countries who fully believed Iraq had WMD capability. Unfortunately, instead of recognizing that so we can correct a dangerous and severe weakness in our defense capability, any politician who opposes Bush has decided that discretion is not the better part of valor. They lie about what they knew, what they believed after 911 and go hide like the rats they are so they can avoid any responsibility and win their next election.

Our government would be far better off with fewer cowards and more honest politicians who have important goals other than to win the next term. If our forefathers saw what is going on now they would be rolling over in their graves.

Rather than debate about the hypocracy of Cheney's comments, look at what he realized years ago about Iraq and failed to address in the planning for the war. Dispite the "changed circumstances" of 9/11, this tape suggests that the failure to plan for the aftermath of the invasion of Iraq was either intentional or the grossest display of incompetence in the history of the United States. It shows Cheney knew what the results of the invasion would be, but failed (refused?) to plan for them. This tape is the smoking gun to an indictment of this administration's mismanagement of the Iraq war. The parents, relatives and friends of every soldier wounded or killed in Iraq ought to be outraged.

Among these are revelation (after the 1991 war) of how far Hussein's weapons programs had progressed (especially his nuclear program), the support Hussein began providing for terrorist activities, the massacres of many of the Iraqi people when they revolted, the numerous UN resolutions which had been passed, the obstructionism Hussein was engaging in to efforts to disarm him, the constant firing on US aircraft by Hussein's forces, the creation of and subsequent breakdown of the oil-for-food program, and the sanctions placed on Hussein and his subversion of them not to mention his engagement in blackmarketing, bribery of various government officials and other influential personnel, and many other subvertive actions he engaged in.

Further changes occurred with the creation and rise of the Al'Quaeda terrorist organization, multiple attacks by that same organization against US interests, and the murder of 3,000 of our civilians - which forced this nation to open its eyes to the dangers throughout the world.

Other changes occurred on the political scene with the changes in leadership of several of our allies' nations, the shift in our own administration, and even changes in the organization and makeup of the United Nations. More fundamentally, changes in which nations would support the removal of Hussein also occurred, with nearly every nation in the world being opposed to it in 1991 while several decided to join us in 2003 in going after that man.

Those of you who pretend nothing changed are so disconnected from reality it isn't funny.

The intellectual father of this experimental war, as you put it, was Bernard Lewis, whose historical analysis of the Islamic world’s self-image and the current lack of liberty in the Middle East led him to conclude that the establishment of a functional democratic state within their midst would cause a change of aspiration among Middle Eastern Muslims, eventually leading to a domino effect of positive change.

The shame of it is, that while this conclusion may be questionable, the sheer incompetence of the post war planning by this administration has rendered the “experiment” moot. This hypothesis has not been tested.

That being said, let us be clear:
1) The war was sold to the American people under false premises. This is not the first time that has been done. Lyndon Johnson and the Gulf of Tonkin “incident” stand as an even more blatant example, but there are others (1812, Mexican-American, Spanish-American).
2) The decision to go to war was a politically courageous one, even if it was foolhardy.
3) The complete lack of post conquest planning is the truest indictment of this administration. To commit a nation to war is a political act of the utmost gravity. To do so without a complete analysis of all possible post war scenarios, with contingency plans for all probable outcomes, is a failure of leadership beyond all forgiveness or redemption!

It is my opinion, that had a proper post conquest analysis been done, this war would not have been prosecuted. The risks, financial, political, and human, would simply not have been worth the potential rewards that a more stable Middle East would bring. The events of 9/11 simply provided the atmosphere in which such an ill-advised undertaking could be sold to Congress and the American people.

Colin Powell’s publicly responded to Blix by stating "it would be useless to give the inspectors more time." Powell made that statement at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. Powell further stated, “Washington has a sovereign right to take military action on Iraq alone or in a coalition of the willing." Powell also claimed Saddam Hussein had ties to Al Qaeda but offered no evidence.

On March 17, 2003, George W. Bush kicked the weapons inspectors out, and on March 20, 2003, George W. Bush launched “his” war.

Therefore, enough of the bold declarations of hot air!! And please save the "he moved WMD out of the country prior to the invasion" spin - it's absurd and would have been absolutely impossible for him to do!!

Every thing that Cheney said was true in 1991 and it became true in 2002. Political leaders in the US changed, but the consequences of invading Iraq, a sovereign nation ruled by an amoral dictator, WHO HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH 9/11, those consequences were predicted in 1991 and became reality.

I work with several Iraqi's and I'll take their all to often ignored opinion over all of this CNN regurgitation. In their opinion the country is better off and they are thankful we are there. Do they all feel that way...no. But most of them do.

It's sad but no mainstream political candidate in the republican or democratic party can stand for anything and become a legitimate candidate in this country. The sooner we all stop arguing about which party is right and which one is wrong we will never realize they are pitting us against each other just to keep bouncing the power back and forth between the two.

Isn't it just possible that they both have good ideas and if they could actually work together we could accomplish something? Yes, I watched on Hardball CM had a BIG STORY with "can you believe this" kind of presentation about what Dick Cheney said about Iraq in 1994. And all the blog pages read "check this out on U tube".

I agree it shows the hypocrisy of Cheney and suggests that it is further proof that he sold the war to the American people knowing that it probably was going to have a devastating effect.

But the BIG STORY that CM didn't even try to entertain is the failure of the corporate media to raise the same question in 2002 or 2003. For the big Corporate Media, with all the resources they have to wait 5 years and jump on a story uncovered by regular citizens on U tube is pathetic.Either they knew it and they didn't say anything about it so that they are not called "unpatriotic" or they slept on the switch until they are awakened by citizen journalism 5 years later. Either way it is utterly pathetic.

Thanks for alternative media we are much better of. I feel very sorry for people who make their decisions mostly based on what pundits say on those Corporate Media outlets.
