I read this book shortly after it was published -- I recommend it highly to everyone -- especially the school principal who thought that was a picture of a gun? It looked like the 'roof people' rescued during Katrina to me.

Before I scrolled down and saw the comments, the first thing I thought was that it was a drawing of Katrina victims on the roof of a house with rescuers boat tied with a rope at the bottom. Something we can at least partially agree on. Its obviously not meant to be any sort of accurate representation of a pistol though it might have developed the trigger, and trigger guard like curves subconsciouly. Its looks a great deal more like a building.
As a rorsarch you see katrina, I see a school building with one student looking down on others coming in.
Depending on the kid it might be something a psychologist should look at.

Alternatively, that could also be a playground, or a parking lot.

I just don't see a gun there at all.

Geez, I used to doodle a lot, I'm glad I am no longer in school - what a mess!

It is certainly expedient to be safe, than sorry - but, really... Was the student then, going to draw up the plans to make such a gun?

Was he angry about moving to Arizona, and thinking about his deep-rooted feelings? Or, was he simply in a kind of daze, bored as so many students are in school. Was he actually considering any violent acts toward anyone?

Or, was this drawing actually meaningless to him?
Anyone consider that people have a tendency to either, 1) Not react appropriately to real signs of anger, rage, or hostility? Or, over react, 2) Does this really resemble a gun? If so, why did he draw it? If not, what is it?

To me, it does not resemble a gun... some imaginations working overtime, perhaps.

Reminds me of the incident back in 2002 where a grade-schooler was suspended for drawing a picture of a soldier carrying a weapon. He'd drawn a picture of one of his personal heroes, his uncle, serving in the Army. I think he got 2 weeks. Evidently you serve more time if you draw the weapon on "Assault Paper".

Perhaps we should write out a special procedure Principals can use to determine whether or not drawings of guns are loaded. Then kids could get back to real education... like playing hangman.

I can't even really see a gun in that drawing. I guess it could be a handle and a barrel, but most people with guns don't draw smiley faces and people walking on the top of them. Maybe it's just me.

But more importantly, this country has worked so hard to insulate children from anything that could possibly be harmful. Are the hallways padded? Can they still scrape their knees on the playground without getting counseling? Are all scissors dulled so they can no longer cut?

How are children ever supposed to learn how to exist in the real world if they are not exposed to some danger, including guns? I'm not saying give kids guns, and yes, if you see them have violent tendencies then maybe some counseling, but for simply doodling a gun they can get suspended? Did this child have a history of violence at his previous school? How much trouble could he have caused in the first 13 days to get suspended?

Stop wasting time coddling children and spend more time educating them (not about Intelligent Design, but math, science, public service, etc)!

When I was a kid growing up in the Fifties, I drew landings at Omaha Beach, complete with landing crafts, German pillboxes, and GI's all over the place, and yes, they all had guns. Here we are again because we continue to refuse to confront the problem of guns, not to mention the problem of troubled children. The saddest part of this to me is the "head-in-the-sand" response of the child's mother. Columbine. Virginia Tech. Revisited. Don't punish my child because he's a "good kid." How was I supposed to know my "good kid" was dreaming of killing people? And had a cache of weapons in the basement, or the dorm room. And was purchasing assault weapons on his credit card. The drawing looks like a doodle - a ramdom sketch. If you looked at my doodles from staff meetings you could probably find all kinds of suggestive lines (especially when the meetings run long). I think the teacher and principal over-reacted - a punish first, ask questions later mentality.
With that said, I know where they're coming from. It used to be school was a safe place and you never worried about violence - and I'm talking 10 years ago. Now I never know if writing a detention will result in a slashed tire, a broken car window or worse. I've been threatened by a student one day and by the parent the next and I teach in an middle/upper middle class school. Are teachers paranoid? No, they really are out to get us.
We all read the news about students who walk into their school and shoot students, principals and teachers and I bet most people comment on the tragety and horror of it and wonder what the world is coming to. I take that to work with me everyday.
Would I want to do a different job. No. And most students are eager to learn - even the hardened ones. But you have to establish a rapport with each student, so when you find a picture like this your first response is not "It's a gun!", but "Tell me about your drawing."

I'm not sure how old you are, but remember, too, when we played with toy army guys, shot at each other with toy machine guns (some had that weird red tip that moved in and out, and made a great noise!)? Uh Huh- sure you remember those days. Those were the days when IF you did wrong, it was OK to get a spanking both at school and at home. By the way- Remember those days when 'drive-by' shootings were completely unheard of? If you had a hard-on against another kid, you took it behind the school and setteled it. Many times, you both wound up being good buddies afterwards. I don't know when it all started, but actions like this gun drawing nonsense sure have screwed up a ton of otherwise 'normal' kids.

The school admin's reaction to this "incident" is expected in a fascist society. America has been drifting towards fascism since before Woodrow Wilson was President, and certainly accelerated more towards it during his administration. Expect to see much more of this, from just about every arm of our Federal, State and local governments, and every agency funded by them. I see a bit of it daily, in some manner or another. The last impediment to the complete takeover of our government by corporate fascists is almost gone, our Constitution. The attacks against it have accelerated since JFK, and now, few attempts are made to keep these actions covert... since most Americans are blind to it. This gun drawing incident is just a symptom of a much larger problem: a government for the government, by the government.

My wife was eating lunch at noon today when without warning CNN showed video with audio of the dogfighting. She became so upset you couldn't continue eating and began to sob telling me what she had just heard and seen. I don't get it. It's OK to show video with audio of dogs in agony crying for their lives but the media won't show soldiers in combat in iraq being shot and crying in agony. The media is afraid of George Bush and the FCC. CNN hit an all time low on this one. Let's start seeing more of the coffins carrying american soldiers coming home every day. That SOB in the white house really has total control of the "so-called" free journalism which critical to a free society.
