I love, love, love, LOVE Harry Shearer!! Everything from THE SIMPSONS to THIS IS SPINAL TAP to MIGHTY WIND brings me and many others so much joy. But, as Keith pointed out tonight, his most important role today is New Orleans resident. His comments were absolutely SPOT ON! I'm at a loss on how to comment on the inequity of monies for MS as opposed to LA. It defies logic, it defies humanity, and it defies words. I guess all I can really "say" is to imagine how beautiful New Orleans and the Gulf Coast could've been had EVEN A PORTION of the money we're spending in Iraq now had been spent to help in the recovery efforts and the efforts to MAKE SURE THE MONEY RAISED GOT TO WHERE IT WAS NEEDED!

Don't forget that tomorrow (Thursday) is the one-year anniversary of the very first "Special Comment"!! Watch especially that very first one ("Feeling Morally or Intellectually Confused?") and/or any of them to remind yourself of THE POWER WE THE PEOPLE HAVE!

In previous elections, various newspapers would have an online questionnaire, and based upon your answers, tell you which candidate was closest to your philosophies. The next screen took you to your 'matched' candidate's page and explained how you agreed.

I haven't seen that yet, has anyone? or is it too soon before the primaries.

In the meantime, I would suggest that you try to watch as many of the debates as possible. Admittedly, they aren't perfect, but at least you would get a feel for some of their positions.

I'm still undecided as well. I'm looking for some one who will be able to clean up after '43's huge mess.

Re the Dragnet segment: Is that really what goes on in men's bathrooms? If so, why is it that the long lines are always for the women's bathrooms? And if so, how is it that men put up with that? Why should should we be surprised that this President doesn't care about the people in the Gulf Coast who still have no home, and cannot afford to rent or buy a home when/if they return? Why should we be surprised when he travels to the region 15 times; not to actually HELP the people, but to use it as a photo op and give speeches full of empty words and even emptier promises?

Why should we be surprised at his heartless actions? This is the man who cares more about lying, souless bastards like Rove and and Gonzales than he does about good upstanding people just trying to get their lives back? This is the man that said "You're doing a great job, Brownie" as people were dying in their homes because of lack of help from FEMA? Why should we be surprised?

This is the man that sent thousands to a war based on lies and deceit and continues to send them over to die and has caused the death of 70,000+ civilian Iraqis? This is the President of empty promises. This is the man who said that our military committment in Iraq was not open-ended and that he would hold the Iraqi Gov't accountable for the political part of the equation and when that falls through, he continues to send more Americans to die and more to come home without limbs.

This is the man that has basically shredded the constitution, put politics before the rule of law and put big business before the rest of Americans.

We cannot trust anything this man says. He and his administration will go down as the worst in history and unfortunately for the rest of America, we and our children and our children's children will have to pay for the actions of those few. As children of the Iraq war dead grow up without fathers and mothers and those that served do survive their injuries spend the rest of their lives recouperating from injuries from the war and as so many are still trying to rebuild their lives after Katrina, this so-called "compassionate conservative" will be back in Crawford clearing brush with the blood on his hands and oil revenue from that blood in his pocket.

I can't believe it but I am starting to feel sorry for Senator Craig. Republicans are calling for his resignation. This is the hieght of hypocracy. These are the same people who changed the rules in the House of Representatives so that Tom Delay could keep his leadership role while he was under multiple investigations. They are the same people who continue to make excuses for a man who was convicted of obstructing the investigation into who outed a covert CIA operative. Thier president sent Alberto Gonzolas to get him out of jury duty in Texas so he could keep his drunk driving conviction secret. Suddenly we are suppose to believe they are hard on corruption in thier party because they are asking for a man who played footsie with an undercover cop to resign, it's absurd. Aside for the fact that they have allowed thier members to do much worse things and get away with it, as long as they didn't admit thier guilt. Shouldn't the party of states rights leave it to the people of Idaho to decide if Craig remains thier senator. All they are doing is sending a message that if you can steal from taxpayers(they never called for Duke Cunningham to resign), if you attempt to intimidate a U.S. Attorney (Pete Deminci NM) into bringing charges he thinks are without merit thats okay. Just whatever you do don't be gay. Go ahead and attack me Larry, Scott and Wayne it is not going to change the fact that I think the republican response to this is far more repugnant than the actual crime.

And a thought on #3. One glaring difference this whole thing has pointed out, is the treatment of Gays by the Democrats and Republicans. Barney Frank has been Gay at least as long as he's been a Politician, been so, said so. He even had some trouble with one of his roommates over an escort service, if I remember right. Didn't seem to rile the Party or his COnstituents all that much. But Republicans are still living in the past, when Homosexuals could be beaten or killed and the perpetrator could plead Justifiable Homocide and get off. Should a Republican be discovered to be gay, the person is an instant Wet Leper. Now that we now all know one Religious Tenet is not what we want this country to be controlled by, maybe the Republicans should get with the Program and ditch the Pogrom.

Full Moon The reason dubya' speech may have seemed well spoken is that someone else w-r-o-t-e it, and he had days and days to rehearse it in front of dick cheney, and most words were probably no more than 3 syllables long. I don't know for a fact, because any time I see that smarmy manchild on TV with his lips moving, I hit the mute button. And the fact that he has visited 15 times means that he got coverage of his faux concern and spent a lot more of our taxes paying for fuel for his 747, the helicopter, the motorcade, and for salaries for body guards, make-up artists, etc, etc, etc ad nauseum.

1) Is is Bush's fault that crime is rampant in New Orleans. Nagin gets a free pass right

2) Is it entirely Bush's fault that the construction that needs to be done has not been completed. Shouldn't a leaner more efficient government such as state and local government participate in the rebuilding.

3) Doesn't this show that the federal government run project are never efficient, because of the enormous bureaucracy.

Katrina was a national embarassment, from the federal, state, and local level. I can admit it that, and that is difference between you dems and I. Your statement would read "Katrina was a national embarassment,from a federal level." Unless, of course, a democrat happened to be in the office at the time.

As a conservative I'd like to say a little about this whole mess. I am socially liberal, meaning I am strenuosly for gay rights and while I'm pro life I don't want all abortions illegal (see incest, rapea and danger to the mother) - i'm a libertarian.

I personally would be more willing to vote non republican if our choices weren't socialism or capitalism or active national defense or passive national defense which is basically what it's come down to.

I think a lot of conservatives are in the same boat -and I believe the hard core anti gay component of the republican party is much much smaller than most of you think.

we want equal rights for everyone, but there's no way social issues are going to prompt me or any other conservative to vote against what we believe in as far as national defense and economic practices.

I see it as both good and bad. The USMC screwed up royally on this one. While I don't condone what they and others have been accused of doing, in reality they need to be in intense therapy.

If they are found guilty or not guilty, that will be the way that it is, but thousands of our troops are coming home with minds that don't function the same way they did before they went to that hell hole. Would people be so understanding or demanding if some poor marine or soldier loses it and goes into homes here and kills people? Nope-they'll get their butts thrown into jail.

No, Bush didn't create hurricane Katrina, he just hasn't spent a whole hell of a lot of time being concerned about it sinse then. He has spent so much damn money sending my brothers and others off to fight his deadly war, and not bothering to clean up our own country. Forget NOLA, what about MS? They still haven't received much of anything.

I don't give a crap about Nagin either-he's as bad if not worse than Bush when it comes down to it. The only reason I even imagine he was reelected, is for the same reason people really looked up to Guiliani right after September 11-they had big enough mouths to talk the talk, but they have failed to walk the walk.

When it comes down to it, NOLA and the entire Gulf coast are STILL part of the United States of America, and they are still hurting badly-with no relief from the F'd up insurance companies or our government. I spent about an hour today looking for the list I compiled (and kept kicking forward on the blog) of the Republican Senators up for re-election in 2008. I know some of you said you copied and emailed the list and I'm hoping you kept it and can re-post it.

Thank you for a great post.

We sure didn't get the 'traditional' republican spending practices from 2000 to 2006 now did we.

We got "pander to the base".
We got "try to legislate morality by moving the Supreme Court further to the right".
We got DOMA.
We got a "spend til you drop" republican legislative branch.
We got '43' who signed every bloated republican spending bill, but vetoed the "Stem Cell Research" bill.
We got deficits, and massive debt, and corporate welfare.
We got Nixon part II with all the secrecy, obfuscation and obstruction.
We got an immoral invasion and occupation of Iraq (IT WAS ALWAYS ABOUT THE OIL).
We've got a broken or almost broken military.

It is possible to have a democrat in charge of national security and the world won't come to an end. But this country can't afford four more years of an administration in the mold of Bush/Cheney.

FDR handled WWII just fine
Kennedy handled the Cuban Missile Crises just fine.
LBJ got bogged down in Vietnam, which also sucked Nixon down as well.

I don't believe that it takes a label of "D" or "R" to make a good commander in chief. I think that the person and their leadership abilities are what makes or breaks the office.

Bush broke it -- big time -- now someone has to fix it. Daddy can't do it this time.

As near as I can tell, the democrats and republicans are more the same fiscally, than not. It's just that Republicans prefer to give the money to the rich and the Democrats prefer to give the money to the poor. To my thinking, the rich don't need any more. I'd rather see it spent on infrastructure myself.

The levees breaking are a man made disaster -- not an act of God. Maintaining the levees is under federal jurisdiction -- specifically the Army Corps of Engineers. You can blame the Democrats in New Orleans all you want, but it doesn't change the fact that NOLA has no control over the Army Corps of Engineers or their budget. This man-made disaster was caused by a federal government that doesn't give a damn about NOLA or the levees.

For years, the politicians in Louisiana begged and pleaded for the levees to be given priority and attention and money, and for years, they were ignored. For every dollar they needed, they got about $0.10.

"God" and the hurricane caused the mess along the gulf coast. Cold hearted callousness destroyed NOLA.

If Halliburton was in charge of the levees, the money would have been there, but then again, they still would have broken due to graft and shoddy workmanship.

If the feds had done their job, Nagin's short comings would never have come to light. There is a special place in Hell waiting for this bunch of "Conservatives without Consciences" and their callous disregard for non-Republican human life.

Rocky Mountain guy- thanks for the partial list. The GAO says they have met 13 of 37 benchmarks but the report is still classified and now the pentagon is editing. I'm not sure how to judge secret benchmarks and I've never seen a list, I guess once agin they just want us to trust them. I'm kind of tired of that.

Actually Scott, it was the USMC that kept going back and forth with their reports-regardless of who actually published it. It was also the USMC that didn't investigate like they should have. If this were an isolated incident then it 'probably' wouldn't be that big of a deal-but it hasn't been. As you can imagine it was HUGE news here in SD, right along with protestors outside the main gate at Camp Pendleton for many weekends in a row!

Am I glad they aren't being found guilty? Of course. However, I'll go back to the bad: Thousands of our fellow Americans are going to be mentally (if not physically), scarred for the rest of their lives. Yes, I know things happen at war, but this is absolute madness.

Another bad part is that men and women, not unlike the ones in the Haditha case and others, still have to come home to the US and assilimate-and all with a VA and government that doesn't want to help. These men need to be helped and hopefully somewhat healed.

It is sad that the VA and other mental health folks with our government are ready and willing to punish and not help those that are coming home. THAT is sad Scott, very sad. Pray that they find the help they need, because people won't be so forgiving if anyone of these soldiers 'react' with PTSD and do the same thing here at home.

Come to think of it, the part about "a little bacon" and "a little beans" kind of reminds me of the FEMA response to Katrina. The part about the guns reminds me of the neighboring communities that tried to stop the New Orleans residents from crossing the bridges, stranding them without food or water. And I'll bet there's a lot of "briars and brambles" in New Orleans today. (That's why Colonel Jackson's picture is on money and George W's is not.)

Because the Newshole moderators keep deleting most of my posts and don't allow me to defend my positions adequately, I am no longer going to be posting on this forum. I have tried to be objective, I have listened to other people's thoughts, and I have tried to be civil, even when "the other side" resorted to name calling and insults.

I have agreed with certain positions, I have excepted administration shortcomings, and I have tried to be honest about what needs to be done in Iraq and the world. But what I have found out is that no matter what I say or write, the extremist liberals on this sight continue to be militant about their positions, and will not accept my right to object to their beliefs. It is their way or no way. That sounds alot like communism.

So, with all of that, I would like to say goodbye to those that have been civil, and wish all of you a peaceful, and prosperous life. Maybe someday you will reflect back on some of my writings, and say that I was open minded, and I did try to reach a middle ground, but that is probably wishful thinking.

Obviously, Larry, you have no concept of how our government works. While the Democrats may have control of both houses of Congress, they do not have a "super majority" meaning that they simply do not have the votes to pass some legislation without the cooperation of the Republicans. Once the legislation is passed, Mr. Bush, who has only exercised the veto power ONCE in his administration (he didn't have to before, the Republicans passed everything he wanted them to and if he didn't, he just issued a signing statement saying he didn't have to obey the law), can veto it. The Democrats do not have enough votes to over-ride a veto. So, Larry, while they "control" Congress, they do not have "control" of the legislation which is passed.

CIVIC 101 . . . great class, you should have invested the money for tuition. It would have served you well.

Hey Larry, Full Moon and others (AKA SFBS) Gee when the money was appropriated for Katrina relief the R's had majorities in both Houses of Congress.
It was known that the levees could not withstand a category 5 hurricane as well. The levees suffered neglect through years of mostly Republican administrations. It is not the state or local governments purview (there's one for you Larry) to fund the Army Corps Of Engineers. It is the FEDERAL GOVERNMENT'S JOB TO DO SO.
Katrina recovery and so many other nightmares are what occur when you let those dedicated to dismantling government run it.

Intersting how the first Senators calling for Craig to resign are up for re-election themselves. Interesting also how much politics are playing in this too. Vitter - no calls for resignation because he would be replaced by a Democratic Governor. Craig would be replaced by a Republican Governor and his political successor would run for the seat in 08 (oh yeah, Craig is one of those guys on the 08 Senatorial Re-election list).

James Richmond - we don't consider homosexuals to be "filth", as you put it. Private behavior among consenting adults is none of my business ..... or yours .... or the governments. The problem with most Republicans is that they want government involvement in everyones lives, personal choices, and private behavior. THAT, my friend, is why it becomes a big deal when the "family values" crowd gets caught doing something they condemn others for.

We don't have a problem with Barney Frank because he's out there promoting rights, privacy, and freedom - not hypocritically persecuting people for political gain.

Wrong, it was because Jebby Bush was Governor.. If there is a Republican ran state they always get taken care of first and foremost especially the Bushy Boys brother!
My thanks to all the people from different areas of the country that came down here during 2004 and gave us back our electricity and helped clean up.. My thanks also to the American Red Cross volunteers who were here to help too.. mostly locals.. who even though they were out and out.. helped! By the way.. it's the people here that worked together after those hurricanes neighbors and friends, once one was taken care of we went to the next house..there is still things left that the government didn't take care of and there are still peoples homes with tarps on their roofs after 3 years! Fortunately alot of homes in our area have been built since Andrew blew through this state in 1992 and they upped the standards of building them. Oh, and remember Papa Bush was in Office when Andrew hit.. and according to many of those people who didn't rebuild in the Homestead area weren't very well taken care of and it was slow! Sure it's better now but don't give all the credit to the state or Bushy boy.. it was the PEOPLE here that were the core of our recovery! I know I was one of them!

I think the important thing to remember about this administration is its astonishing record of success in accomplishing its goals.

It was able to shred the SALT agreements and to start pouring untold billions of dollars into Star Wars - the most dangerous and expensive boondoggle in human history.

It was able to keep people like Richard Clarke and John O’Neill at bay long enough that another Al Qaeda attack took place, giving the Bush Administration untold political powers.

It was able to confuse aggressor campaigns to destabilize regimes in a phony Axis of Evil with what should have been a real campaign against real enemies of the US.

It was able to plan all through the summer of 2001 for US companies to move into Iraq after the removal of Saddam Hussein, and never be forced to reveal that such discussions had taken place before 9/11.

It was able to steal two Presidential elections by using traitors who place GOP party loyalty above honor or anything else.

So they didn't do such a hot job in new Orleans. From the point of view of the Bush Administration, the Neoconservatives, and their corporate sponsors, the basic response is: Who cares?
