#5 S-Chip--In California, we had a similar program (at least, I believe it was) called the California Crippled Children's Service. My infant daughter needed corrective surgery on her foot, and even though I had a well-paying job and good insurance, what the insurance did NOT pay would have bankrupted me. Insurance that would help people in my income bracket can be a life saver, and there's no good reason why the Republicans should be tying this up.
#4 Eavesdropping--Why bother going after the telecom companies for their crimes? When the economy goes tits up, the smaller ones will merge with the bigger ones, or go out of business. There won't be any money for people to collect damages.
#3 Out of '08--I don't believe any of the polls. I think they are being manipulated so we will all believe that the candidates that most people think suck are out in front. Hillary, Rudy and Mitt are not near as popular as those polls say. I'm going to re-register as a Republican and vote for Ron Paul in the primaries. His popularity is real, and Countdown doesn't give him enough air time.

DUMP THE TOBACCO TAX BEFORE RELOADING SCHIP!
That idea, a sixty-one cent per pack tax increase, was straight out of a Republican think tank...a tax that had nothing to do with income. Only "sin" was to be taxed. Give 'em that old time, holier-than-thou religion.

The Democrats need to change that aspect of SCHIP and fund it with an income tax instead. Otherwise, some of the people paying for SCHIP will be people who earn less than those being helped by SCHIP. Yup, that's the Repunk way, all right...mean, nasty, and unfair. Just can't understand how any self-respecting Democrat could have supported that funding plan.

I also can't understand how the liberals in media, including Keith Olbermann, failed to expose this incredibly regressive tax scheme. Instead there was utter silence on the subject...as if people who smoke cigarettes were non-persons, deserving of every punishment, including grossly unfair taxation. With liberals like them, who needs conservatives?

If it passes with the cigarette tax, I'll be paying more for SCHIP than our beloved, way above my pay grade host...and that's way not right.
But if it does, I hope all my fellow liberals do the right thing and take up smoking...after all, it would be for the children.

I called their customer service to ask a general question of the type of documentation that has been handed over to the govt without a subpoena and was told they could not release that information. There are millions upon millions of people in this country who love baseball, who love and cherish their memories of going to the park with their fathers as children. Funding SCHIP with an increased tax on cigarettes was a compromise with the Republicans who insisted that general revenues not be used. "Sin Taxes" are regressive since they are not based on income, thereby disproportionally affecting those with lower incomes.

When insurance rates started going up, government employees found themselves in the same situation as employees of private companies: footing the difference in costs, having coverage reduced, being forced into HMOs for cost savings, as well as having much larger up front costs and co-pays.

We also saw future raises diminished as insurance costs soared and raises were traded to offset them as well as agreeing to pay larger monthly premiums. We went, like private employees, from 100% funded insurance to helping to pay for our plans, having less coverage, having less choice, and paying more in deductables and co-payments.

Nobody's getting "free" insurance anymore.

Forget "Which of these stories will you be talking about tomorrow?" How about "Which of these stories was I talking about less than a half hour before sitting down to watch Countdown?" S-CHIP and Rep. Stark's comments, and what I said was not radically different from KO's comment that there was "something refreshing" about his remarks even though "obviously he went to extremes."

Stark's line about "the President's amusement" is a little difficult to dismiss as completely baseless given that:

(a) the troop surge was something he came up with seemingly on his own after completely rejecting the advice of the Iraq Study Group -- a decision that certainly seemed more like a whim than a carefully considered plan based on discussions with any military experts

(b) the President recently referred to the possibility of World War III with a giggle like that of a schoolboy who had just passed gas.

It's difficult not to get the impression that he's doing and saying things simply for his own amusement, even if that isn't really the case.

The tenor of the debate from either side of the House floor was hardly admirable. If Stark is going to be compelled to apologize for his remarks, then there are quite a few others who need to get in line behind him.

Larry - according to the GAO, the $5B expansion (not $6B) that the president is offering for SCHIP will not cover the children that are currently covered by the program. So at the end of the 5 year term of that expansion, there will be fewer children covered by SCHIP. If he really cared about the children, he'd at least offer enough $$ to cover the children already enrolled in the program.

One can argue that $35B is too much (I wouldn't, but reasonable people can disagree), but $5B is too little. If we aren't going to cover more children - let's at least not reduce the number covered.

Lucky, 10:36am. Thank you for your response. I wasn't sure that ALL Federal employees had free insurance. I thought that insurance was free for the employee, but that insurance for his/her family was paid by the employee. When I wrote that piece I was very careful not to state as fact something I didn't know for sure.
Many, many years ago my insurance was free, but I had to pay a premium for my children.

Larry: What planet are you from? People who have insurance are not allowed to "switch" for free insurance. This is for children who come from families who make too much money for medicaid and not enough for private insurance or are underinsured and most medical problems are not covered. Families have to qualify for SCHIP and provide proof of income, family size, bank accounts, any kind of account that can be spent down, cds, etc. Grow up Larry and look around you. People are hurting, hungry and in trouble financially. This administration is immoral in the true sense of the word. The citizens are not treated justly, there are hungry and homeless people all around. If you do not see it and Dubya doesn't see it, then you are immoral. Mike, AL..to get back to the Verizon thing that never got posted. I thanked you for saving me the trouble of making that phone call yesterday. I said I was sure people had already started filing lawsuits. Which I found out this morning they have. Since no one knows who's information has been given out, I suppose just being a customer of one of these telecom companies is enough to file a suit. I guess it doesn't matter that they screw their customers who keep them in business as long as the government promises contacts to some of them..Qwest being one of them. As for the others, who knows why they did it.
The only way for us to protest is dropping them. If enough of us do it, they'll get the message. Lucky you your contract is up this year, I still have 2 years on mine..grrrr.

Anomaly - I was responding directly to another post where government employees were accused of getting a free insurance ride on the back of taxpayers. My reply was a correction of that erroneous "fact". It was limited to government employees (local, state and federal) and not anyone else.

And yes, the union that I am a retired member of, the Federation of Nurses and Health Professionals - Local 5001, sponsored the premiere of Sicko in this area. It was amazing.

Sicko will be available on DVD November 6 with over 80 additional minutes added.

Kudos to Representative Pete Stark. I find it stunning that "I Need a Crying Towel" Boehner who had a tearful meltdown on the House Floor criticizes someone else for an emotional response to events.

Scott Copeland: Kind of tough on Kevn from NJ. Many may not agree with Kevin on some issues but I have seen some open-mindedness from Kevin on a few topics.

Intolerance is seen and exhibited on both sides. Those who proclaim to be open-minded need to be careful not to appear intolerant of the beliefs and philosophies of others. The great divide we see in our country today is exasperated by extremeist from both sides. They make it difficult for those who have opinions that may vary and fluctuate from right to left and left to right, depending on the issue, to have any faith in the political system that as of late appears to be controled by extremists.

I agree the name-calling is uncalled for, and that Bush's incompetence makes it very difficult not to be frustrated to the point of name-calling with those who still support this guy, but as we express the importance of the US once again gaining the respect it once had in the world of nations, so too must those of us calling for this change should try and use the same diplomacy to bring as many into the fold as possible. Telling them the door is closed and that they should return to the tent of the right wing extremists as an O'Reilly blog, etc., deepens the divide and will not allow for people to agree to disagree even if the debate gets heated at times.

Sorry, Tom, but you are wrong. You, like some other posters, are basing your opinion on personal experience. In my area, you're right . . . someone making that much money SHOULD be able to afford insurance. That's why my state uses the 200% poverty level. In states where the cost of living is far higher than the cost of living here, the states use the 300% poverty level formula. BTW, the formulas didn't change. You are spewing talking points. If you knew what you were talking about, you'd understand why this bill had bi-partisan support and had the support of over 80% of the American public. That's what happens when you listen to spin.
