Yikes! I just left a comment on yesterday's thread. Great show. I particularly loved the appearance of Rick "Man-on-Dog" Santorum on WPITW.

There was a story in today's Pittsburgh Post-Gazette about political prosecutions in the Attorney General's office; 3 prominent Pittsburgh Democrats have been investigated or indicted by Santorum protege, US Attorney Mary Beth Buchanon. Yesterday, former AG Richard Thornburg essentially accused her of politicizing prosecutions because she hasn't investigated ANY Republicans, including Santorum, who had to give back over $60,000 in money from a local school district for falsely claiming that his kids live in that district, thus requiring the district to pay his kids cyber school bills.

The attack on the Democratic party in Allegheny County (Pittsburgh metro region) is an attempt to break Democratic one-party rule in the city. That might actually be good for Pittsburgh, if the Republican party would clean up its act and agenda nationally, because one-party rule here by Dems isn't good either. An enterprising reporter might find a pattern within a pattern: not only a pattern of investigating and prosecuting Dems, but a pattern of investigating and prosecuting Dems in areas where they need to build the party to compete in big states.

I thought the final story about the horrific fires in southern California was beautifully produced and presented. There can be no more powerful testament to not only the horror but to the bravery, compassion, and the spirit of those most directly affected by the fires and to those who are putting their lives at risk reporting on and fighting the fires than simply using the pictures and the words of the people involved. I hope lives and property can be restored and rebuilt as soon as possible and that peace can come to families who've lost loved ones.

Recently, the White House, anxious to find an excuse to get out of Iraq and move on to Iran, declared victory over al Qaeda in Iraq. Reviewing the transcript of Mr. Bush’s October 17 press conference, I found this victory declaration:

“Yeah, we've hurt them bad in Iraq. We've hurt them bad elsewhere. If you're the number three person in al Qaeda, you've had some rough goes -- you've either been captured or killed. And we're keeping the pressure on them, all the time.”

But victory evidently did not mean the end of fearmongering. In the same paragraph of the transcript, I found the following:

“Al Qaeda is still dangerous. They're dangerous in Iraq, they're dangerous elsewhere. Al Qaeda is not going to go away anytime soon. That's why it's important for us to be finding out what their intentions are, and what are their plans, so we can respond to them…. And they still want to do us harm … and they're still active.”

Now I have just one question -- Does Mr. Bush know what he’s talking about? Or does he know what he’s talking about? And just in case you think that’s two different questions, I refer you to my old friend the Duchess:

“Ah, well! It means much the same thing,” said the Duchess, digging her sharp little chin into Alice’s shoulder as she added, “and the moral of THAT is – ‘Take care of the sense, and the sounds will take care of themselves.’”

I guess my constant referral to Jacobins, and Marat, inspired Olbermann. But one thing he neglected in his analogy.

Jacobins were violent socialist atheist who outlawed religion of any kind, but that of the State. Outlawed private property, and mandated a ten day work week with new names for the day of the week, with the hope that the common man wouldn't keep track of when the sabbath was.

By law, everyone had to refer to everyone as "Citizen", no Mr., Miss., nor Mrs. as everyone was an "equal" with some Citizens being more equal then others. And all forms of morality were done away with, as they were all based on "outdated superstitions" with a new Morality was to be based on "Scientific Understanding".

The rule of the Jacobins came to an end after Robespierre had sent all of his allies to the guillotine, and claimed that he meant to send even more of the ruling Citizens under the blade.

Robespierre was thus arrested, and executed with the last of his supporters.

Now who in today's American Politics are Anti-Religion, Pro-Scocalist, want nothing to do with "Outdated Morality", and are violently so? They would be the Modern Jacobins.

I am extremely upset that the news media keep comparing the relief efforts for the wildfires to that of hurricane Katrina. They're two different beasts, and to assert otherwise, is insulting and deminishes the heartfelt charity of thousands of volunteers. On more that one occassion, statements have been made to the effect of "Wow! Things are so much better organized in San Diego than they were at the Houston Astrodome." No one came right out and said "Those idiots in Texas didn't know what they were doing", but might as well have. To even compare the two disasters is totally irresponible and shows nothing but bad judgement. To imply that the help provided to Katrina suvivors was somehow inferior is completely disrespectful to all that is good in human service and sacrifice. Perhaps the reporters in California should ponder this: be thankful that thousands of lives haven't been lost in the fires; be happy that the majority of families are still together and not separated, left to wonder if a loved one is dead or alive; be glad that no one is being shipped to the far reaches of the country, living in unfamiliar places, not knowing what the next day may bring; and finally, consider that all human suffering is basically tha same to those who experience it.

KO reports that much of the land burned, is actually Federal land. Do you suppose they really care?

I cry as I think of all those innocents being killed, or harmed, by the blazes! And, what of the poor "critters" who used to have a home, as well?

The only good thing about the current state of moderation on this blog is that I get a chance to read all of the posts I missed yesterday. Here is one that didn't get enough attention, from Nighthawk, New Jersey:

5 - The first responders are incredible heroes, but before the fires fade into the rush of the next big story, responsible media should giving more air time to the folks that are talking about the problems that come from failure to implement well known fire defenses and new building codes that can reduce the impact of wildfires and the risk to the fire fighters. And for all those Katrina buffs, wildfires are localized disasters within functioning communities - communication, transportation, power, water and shelter are still working nearby, and in this case, most of the victims are neither poor nor minority.

Nigthhawk makes a great point here that runs all the way back to the beginning of an administration that has made a political tool out of incompetence. One of the best books on the 9/11 attack is "102 Minutes," by two NY Times reporters, Jim Dwyer and Kevin Flynn. The book's project is to examine the 102 minutes between the first jet hitting the WTC and that building falling (after the collapse of its twin). The story of events inside the towers necessarily takes us into questions of building design and building codes. The codes were actually changed after the Towers were begun, but builders were permitted to use the new code.

Now, this makes a difference on 9/11 because the WTC towers did not have a interior masonry fire tower or stair cases that were widely spaced (as the Empire State Building does). Has anyone heard ANY discussion of building codes, post 9/11?

Then consider Katrina. Didn't everyone in this country think that Katrina would spur not only the construction of CAT 5 levees but also enactment of the coastal restoration proposals (Coastal 2050, for example) to allow the coast to provide a natural defense against hurricanes?

Good morning everybody..hope today is a better day, and better news coming about the fire situation.

#5..Santiago Canyon fire started in 3 different points of origin. That is certain, according to the FBI doing the investigation. There is a $70,000 reward for information leading to the capture and conviction of individual or individuals responsible. I am puzzed though about the 5 people dead reported on Countdown. I believe it is only 1, the others may have been reported as connected with the fire because a vehicle crash occured in the fire area. FBI profile of arsonist: male..having a dominant mother..no father figure. Anger at society, sexually challenged. They get off setting fires and like watching what they did.

#4..Terror-publicans! Excellent! and you've given me the only reason that counts for not continuing to watch Fox and Friends.

Then on the right of the screen under "Fire Relief 2007" click and it will take you to the contribution site. There is a phone number. You might call and ask if there is a fund as you mentioned. Check out this wonderful website. This station has been in existence for 60 years. This is the one Keith used to work for as a sportscaster..way back in the good old days.

I'm also so tired of hearing Rudy talk about the fact that he "ran a large city" so that makes him the most qualified candidate to become President. Sorry Rudy, old boy, but we have a current President who was governor of the 2nd largest state and look how well he has done running the country. Instead of relying on their so-called "experience" let's look at their integrity, honesty, and intelligence and if those are the qualifications, Rudy is at the bottom of the list of qualified candidates.

Great show!

1) Thanks for going back to the Worst Person photo effect. The Polaroid photo look just enhances the badness of these folks (especially the Malkin and O'Reilly photos).
2) The end segment where they just showed images from the wildfires was especially powerful. This was much better than the usual final segment and should be a continuing feature.
3) "The quick check on the weather" was funny. Keith appears to be getting more comfortable with the new set.

I will be voting for whoever gets the democratic nomination because this country cannot take four more years of religious authoritarians, neo-con chicken hawks, reckless spending, run-away debt, belligerence, intolerance and incivility. We cannot afford to be lied into another elective invasion and the judicial system cannot and should not be moved any further to the right. And finally, the possibility of a theocracy should the Republican party win, scares me to death. In the real world, we cannot afford politicians who insist that religion trumps science, but I agree that morals and ethics should influence everyone.

Our local and state government have done a superb job in fighting the San Diego fires and taking care of it's citizens. The feds really don't make a big difference here. More troops and equipment wouldn't have changed anything. Instead of being critical, let's give local government and it's citizens credit for a disaster handled well.

I thought the final story about the horrific fires in southern California was beautifully produced and presented. There can be no more powerful testament to not only the horror but to the bravery, compassion, and the spirit of those most directly affected by the fires and to those who are putting their lives at risk reporting on and fighting the fires than simply using the pictures and the words of the people involved. I hope lives and property can be restored and rebuilt as soon as possible and that peace can come to families who've lost loved ones.

But it was worth it. You gave us all quite a chuckle. It was a very funny segment, and everyone up here felt you handled it just right. With class, something you don't see too often between the fans from our two cities when it comes to baseball. Your friend Terry Francona would have been proud of the segment had he not been busy. And I bet he would have had a good laugh like we all did as we listened to you.

As I commented on the Baseball Board, tonight may be Curt Schilling's last start ever for the Red Sox. Well, he set out and did what he wanted to do when he signed with us: to help in our quest to beat the Yankees and take the Red Sox to the World Series.

GRRRRRR!!!! I posted a couple lengthy posts while at a different computer at 4:45 AM about the job that is being done out in California. So let me try this again from memory.

The coordination between local, state, and fed official is going very well at this point. There was plenty of resources provided by the federal government and there was not a shortage as a result of Iraq. Nice try Keith, you were really reaching last night. Bush has done all that has been asked of him, and the Governor is happy with the federal response. The key difference between this and Katrina is you have a state official engaged and getting it done. This is how emergency response should work

I going to condense my writings in to one post, so it may seem to ramble. Jen, you basically called me a sheep and said that we don't allow any criticism of Bush. That is where you are far off. I would agree that some of the criticism of the Bush adminstration is well founded, however in an instance where the events hadn't even unfolded, you go after Bush is not of value. The response to Katrina by local, state, and federal officials was terrible, but here the response has been very good. So I believe that before you start criticizing someone, establish whether the criticism is warranted based on facts, develop your argument why the criticism is warranted, and state your case. Otherwise, like in this case, it is baseless accusations. baaaaah

As for Keith O, the same goes for you. You were reaching for something to blame bush for, and it was very transparent.

I was hopeful that the response would be good to this disaster, and so far it has been. Stay safe in CA and all other locations

Shame on those who say "these things do happen." I've heard quite enough of that nonsense this year in the aftermath of various tragedies and disasters. I don't wish any of these ills on anyone, but those without compassion are indeed worthy of contempt.

Kevin in NJ- Sorry to offend. I simply have lost all trust in this administration. When they say two days after the fires have started that California is getting everything it needs. I wonder if California had had all it's national guard equipment and personel in state they would have been able to more effectivly fight the fires in the crucial first days before they spread into so many communities. But since half that equipment is in Iraq for no good reason California had to wait days to have planes and other equipment sent from states all over the country. It may not have mattered this time, but what about next time. The National Guard was never ment to fight foreign wars, just ask bush, and using them to do so has real consiquences at home. It is another way bush has abused our military to fight his war. If he needs troops he needs to suck it up and ask for a draft, continuing to send the same guys over and using the Guard and Reserves leaves us all less safe at home. Sorry I called you a sheep, but that is my reaction when talking points are tossed at me.

Ro Meistre, So. CA 12:36 AM..please be safe. It is a brutal time. My heartache is also for the critters being killed and panicked. The images of the rabbits, deer, horses running for thieir lives is heartbreaking as well as the people. Two people have been found dead in San Diego County, victims of the fire. They didn't heed warnings to evacuate and paid with their lives. A PG&E (Pacific Gas & Electric) helicopter crashed in San Diego while surveying damage. Four people, 2 are ok, just minor injuries the other two hospitalized. If you've ever seen what these guys do, it's a miracle more aren't killed. Again Ro..be safe.

Scott West in Galvaston- You make excellent points about the differance between the fires and Katrina. I would also like to add that after Katrina New Orleans was cut off from the rest of the country, we had a large number of people simply unable to leave and when they were shipped out they were sent to communities simply unprepared for the amount of need there was. In California the fires affected a huge area but within and around those areas were many safe communities. Consiquently there was not the overwhelming need in any one community. Also everyone in California has a car. Krista made an excellent point yesterday about the economics of evacuation. I wonder, however, how people who lost thier homes will be doing 6 weeks from now. There is no affordable housing in California. I only hope we don't forget them just because the immediate aftermath has gone so well.

France, for example, is the country with the 35-hour workweek, while in this country, we have decidedly gone in the opposite direction. Most retail and service businesses are open on Saturdays and Sundays, including many that are owned by conservatives. Who do YOU think works those “Sabbath” shifts? As to rejecting outdated morality, I presume you are referring to your own morality, which I again interpret as wanting the right to tell me what to do. As to advocating violence, Mr. Molinero, I suggest that conservatives examine their own consciences carefully before throwing rocks at anyone else's house.

If you actually tried to get to know one of us “modern Jacobins,” Mr. Molinero, you might be surprised. I know I would.

Just finished watching Gov. Arnie and Presidente Bush talking to the masses in California. While it all seems tied up and ready for implementation, we will see how efficient the dollars needed will come in to help with the recovery. There was a general present who will talk with the Governor about what is needed, if anything from the military. The National Guard representative was also in attendance. Diane Feinstein made the trip with Bush from Washington. I couldn't help but notice that El Presidente said almost word for word what he said to the folks in LA after Katrina. Something to the effect of "I am here to tell you Washington will not forget you, we will do everything we can to help. Tomorrow will be a better day". I wait for the recovery and rebuilding to begin. One bright note, almost everyone, with the exception of a couple of hundred people, have all left the San Diego stadium. All have gone to begin their lives again. I was impressed with all the things provided for these folks..nothing left undone. Thanks to the wonderful volunteers and cooperations, these folks did ok. So unlike the people in LA. There really is no comparison of the two, except for the response to help. Two different disasters, different circumstances.

So true jen, and where for heaven's sake will they go? Rents are astronomical, housing prices are terrible. While insurance will pay for their temporary housing until their houses are rebuilt, that could take a long time. Don't know if insurance will cover them for an extended period. California's cost of living is extremely high.

The real issue as regards Bush being able to perform in California, contrary to his actions with Katrina, concerns the congressional districts in which these fires have occurred and to what extent these congressional districts are republican held enclaves. It would be incumbent upon Countdown to do a piece upon this and speculate on whether federal aide will be forthcoming on these bases which apparently were not available in democratic New Orleans. Afterall, Duke Cunningham's district was near San Diego and isn't this a bastion of republican strength? Expect massive federal help as republican votes are at issue here!

CA- This is kind of off topic but since you brought up the idea of capable republicans like Schwarzenager. I for the life of me don't understand why republicans are failing to insist Chuck Hagel run for president. He is a true conservative with all the credentials and would get a lot of the independant and conservative democratic vote. While I may not actually vote for him, my dad and brother probably would. He has also showed a sense of humanity and rational thought lacking in the other republican candidates. All the current republican candidates scare the hell out of me. They are all warmongers, torture freaks or science deniers. I have been torn about praising Sen. Hagel because while I would really like a Democratic president and don't want to give republicans any ideas. I do like the idea of checks and balances, and with someone like Hagel I would at least know the country was in capable hands.

Update on my niece she is back in Rancho Bernardo looking at the remains of her burned down condo she just bought, and dealingwith insurance FENMA etc,at 24 overwhelemd by it all Her parents are safe in Chula Vista along with her youngest brother. after packing and evacuating to Imperial Beach then being allowed ot turn around.One nephew ended up staying put at last minute in La Mesa.the oldest still stuck in Rancho Bernardo. I was told they were all safe and sound Monday night in Chula Vista, but not true, still scatterd but they are all safe, which is important.

Kudos ot our Lt Governor sticking it to Bush ad the insurance companies. !!!!!!!!!!How dare that evil Cheney falll asleep while discussing the fires out here.

Yes C A, I do give credit where credit is due. Also, since Governor Schwarzenegger's 40-million "special election" debacle, held only four months before the election of 2004, he's a changed man. Once full of himself, calling democrats "losers and girlymen", he was humbled with the smack down given him by the voters of California. He lost every single Bill on HIS "special election."

Since then, he has been doing things I consider wonderful. For example, his work on Global Warming, Statewide Healthcare and Immigration Reform for example. He is NOT the man who chanted "George W. Bush, George W. Bush" at the 2004 Republican National Convention. Quite the opposite, he stood up to President Stupid on sending California’s National Guard to Iraq; he’s called his Global Warming policies “irresponsible.” In addition, if he is the "new voice" of the Republican Party, it certainly would be a good thing!!

I admire how he's changed, his apologies for his behavior and for the good he is doing for the poor in California. He's "ok" by me, NOW!! The difference is "we the Party of non Kool-Aide drinkers" can be bi-partisan!!

I believe that's why “Twit” Humes of FOX NOISE stated he’s been "a huge disappointment"!! That says it all!!

A little story about Bob Jones "University"...they PROUDLY tout the fact that they are not a regionally-accreditated university. They view it as some kind of twisted "sticking it to the man" issue, but, because they won't submit to accreditation, none of their credits will transfer to other regionally-accreditated universities. So, any student who goes there who decides to transfer somewhere else (can't IMAGINE why they'd want to do that!!), the student basically has to start from square one academically.

Just a bit of humor for this difficult time here in California and problems in this nation..

One of our reporters/helicoper traffic reporter lives in Malibu. He and wife were ordered out during the Malibu fire. They have not been able to return. With so many critters, especially horses needing to be rescued Bill Smith said he had to rescue a horse himself. While he was reporting from the chopper, he brought out this beautiful, wooden horse his parents had given him on his 1st birthday. With his parents both gone, this was oh so valuable to him, he couldn't leave it behind. I was so touched by this, I almost cried.

Paul. But he talked bad about the President, and that's enough to get him voted off the island. In the movie 'Breakfast At Tiffany's', Mickey Rooney plays a Japanese neighbor, Mr.Yunioshi. In 'Teahouse of the August Moon', Marlon Brando plays 'Sakini', a mediator between a village and the US Military. Both characters could be thought to be insensitive characterizations, or the opposite. Now we come to our own Chinese Dishwasher, who seems to have arisen in defense of actual Chinese restaurant workers, who were made the butt of jokes, tied to Hillary Clinton, by a detractor of hers. Is Chinese Dishwasher really Chinese? Is it a non-Chinese person? I know it's not Marlon Brando, but might it be Mickey Rooney? Is it anti-Chinese in characterization, or pro-Chinese in defense of their low status in American Society in General? Let's remember, the Chinese were originally mocked by the detractor, not the Chinese Dishwasher, who has continually been there champion, especially in context of humorous retorts that would not be concieved by immigrants. In fact, if explained fully to them, they might welcome someone who was defending them, no matter the methods used. Just an observation.

My father is an engineer, one of his brothers is a doctor and many of my cousins have graduated from college, I have over 100 cousins in Jordan. One is a pharmacist, another and International attorney, another a doctor, another a marine biologist; and well, there are so many, they're too many to list here.

All of my relatives were horror-struck by the 9/11 attacks; my mother, sister and I received many calls stating such. Also, I went to Jordan this summer and many Jordanians apologized to me for 9/11, six years later and even though they had absolutely nothing to do with the attacks.

I'll try to get past Larry; my mother has told me many times he's not worth my time. Occasionally, I do feel a responsibility to reply to his attacks against my mother, my sister, my Jordanian relatives and me.

A response in Greenville , why do mortgage companies require insurance if the gov't is just going to rebuild for them ? I agree that if you build on the beach you should suffer the consequences of erosion and / or hurricanes. Should I call the gov't when my roof needs replacing ? If I want to switch health insurance to let the gov't pay because I need a vacation , who should I call ? Gov't is not the answer to everyone's problems. People who buy $10 million homes should be able to insure them or replace them. The gov't is there to help them get back on their feet , not provide a new $10 million home.

Now you idiot, my question was about California wanting to get reimbursed. The federal gov't sent supplies , firefighters , equipment, etc to the scene. Does not the state have any responsibility to pay for anything ? Obviously not to a liberal.

My wife and I were there for the Ponderosa Stomp last year as..well New Orleans (another city I dearly love) obviously wasn't able to host. What a thrill, I saw Scotty Moore (he didn't perform though) Clarence 'Frogman' Henry, Travis Wammick, James Burton, Lady Bo, Roy Head, Arch Hall Jr. and many more. I fell in love with the food too! The meals at Ellen's were mouth watering, Alcenia's was another highlight, my wife signed the guestbook with "I hope the food in heaven is this good". Oh and the Renezvous, YUM YUM! My doctor just me put on a little more potent cholesterol drug. Hmmmm...I don't care, I'm coming back to your city someday for more food and I want to take in a Redbirds game. Looks like a nice ballpark from out front. Oh yeah, and welcome.

Mark, AZ. Do you have a family? If so do you ever engage them in conversation? Do you have any friends? Do you talk to them? Do you have neighbors that you chat with over the fence? Maybe some co-workers to gab with around the water cooler? Do you ever drop in at your local watering hole and chat with other patrons? Do you ever take in a ballgame and converse with the people sitting around and next to you? If so you would easily come to realize that the people in this country are fed up with Excederin headache # 43 and his neocon criminal cohorts. The citizens of this country are sick and tired of all the treasonous transgressions that are too numerous to type out now and besides his nefarious deeds have already been posted even just today on this thread and have been for months on others. You can just feel the despair, you can sense the anger, heck, even the guy up from me on my street scraped off his Bush 04 bumper sticker recently. Even with caging, stacking the courts and crooked Deibold machines the vote is going to be so overwhelmingly anti Republican the GOP may just end up being a bad memory. But I will say that this issue appears to have grown as a center of controversy as of late beginning with the Swiftboating of Kerry and questions about Bush's service record, or lack thereof. I know it is not always possible, but it would be nice to have a Commander and Chief (perhaps even make it a prerequisite for the job) who has served in a combat situation.

Although it does not matter to me or most if not all service personnel who served and who did not serve I understand the controversy that some on the right have created and that really hit the fan as I stated to K when those on the right Swiftboated Kerry. I was livid about that. By calling those against the war in Iraq unpatriotic or by questioning their service (including many past veterans of all ranks) and as they did with Kerry no matter how he may have used that service for political gain, such accusations and blasphemy does need to be responded too. Thank you for doing so. And as I have stated to K when in combat one could care less about the bickering. But I will also say that once returning home and years after, veterans should never, ever, be even remotely considered unpatriotic because they disagree with a war or an administration. And no veteran of a combat situation should ever, ever, be accused of not supporting the troops no matter their position on a war or policing occupation. Especially by persons in an administration who never served this country in a combat situation.
