The hood is pulled back and you find yourself in a cell with perhaps two or three people who ask you very pointed questions about your group's plans to blow up a building. These people aren't interested in listening to you profess your innocence. They want you to say what they want to hear, since innocence is just a pesky side-note these days. You tell them you know nothing, but what they hear is, "I'm not telling you anything!"

They 'interrogate' you vigorously, which includes repeated water-boarding over several weeks time. Eventually, you're released without apology or compensation for your false imprisonment, denial of counsel, complete shut-out from the outside world, and flat-out kidnapping.

Jeesh, this “torture” argument can get nowhere, heck leftist liberal loony losers consider the tickling of one’s feet torture – the concept has become too subjective. The question is then the degree of “torture” that we would deem acceptable. Obviously there is a spectrum ranging from tickling of feet, to waterboarding to amputation of appendages.. Somewhere along the spectrum there is a point where permanent physical damage is done, and that is where I would draw the line. Waterboarding - the controlled simulated drowning of a person - done correctly does not result in permanent physical damage and should be acceptable in occasions where the information obtained could save lives. Obviously it shouldn’t be done arbitrarily, and should only be done by knowledgeable experienced people with a doctor present.

Of the 2 candidates who have a snowball's chance in Hades, one is the current mayor who made rich people richer, my property taxes doubled during his tenure but found the funds for the new Colts stadium, anyway (they better win the stinkin' SuperBowl for the next 25 years straight for all the tax $$$ going into that sucker!), and the other is a retired Marine who is basically touting that as his only qualification. It is now the time for Olbermann to make good on his promise to hold the Democratic Party leadership accountable and the next time he has Mrs. Clinton for an interview, he better stop the softballs and ask why she has not supported Bush/Cheney criminal investigation, impeachment and removal from office. What are the instances that this interrogation technique was used. Was it KSM. Was it ever used? So let me get this straight. If we got valuable information from the creep that was the mastermind behind killing 3,000 innocent americans, and it save innocent american lives, then good. So...your decision to vote for Mr. Mukasey came after a private meeting.

This reminds me of an incident some years ago when the Republicans were being pressed on an issue of the Senate overseeing covert operations. Someone complained that whatever was happening, was happening without the American people being aware of it. Richard Shelby replied that the American people did not need to worry because they did have oversight, since he was aware of what was going on.

That was it. "Trust me."

Well, trust me, Senator. We don't.

I don't suggest that you are lying or cutting secret deals, just that we cannot trust you, when it comes time to take a stand, to understand and put above all else the interests of the American people as defined in their Constitution.

You're not like us. We don't have dinner with judges and hash things out. We just know that this guy of yours refuses to say that waterboarding is torture and even has the unbelievable gall to say that he doesn't know what waterboarding is, and therefore he must not be allowed to become Attorney General of the United States, no matter how difficult it may be to reject him.

Senator Schumer, when you look at those approval ratings for Congress, do you think they're only directed at the Republicans?

I think the problem goes much deeper and the water boarding issue is just one of many as of late that if considered by themselves would not be mountains but as you said mole hills. I'd like to make one thing very, very clear: I am against torture not to spare the murderers in Al Qaeda (who should light themselves on fire and fall down a flight of stairs for all I care). I am against the torture of potentially innocent people. I'd like to think that if I, or someone I know, is at the wrong place at the wrong time, we wouldn't be kidnapped and tortured for only being guilty by circumstance.

And if we take the small step to accept waterboarding, what's going to stop us from sliding down the slippery slope? Malnutrition, sleep deprivation, 'simulated' suffocation, dismemberment, mutilation, electrocution...where does it end?

Let us assume our intelligence agencies uncover the possibility of a major terrorist attack on NYC. In custody is a person who has knowledge of and is involved in the planning of this soon to be executed attack. The decision is made to torture this person, after he refuses to cooperate. Waterboarding, sodomy, whatever you can think of is inflicted, as a result of you the President authorizing this torture. The terrorist finally buckles and gives precise leads again conforming that NYC is the target of the attack and those leads potentially allow the attack to stop. While investigating those leads provided by this terrorist, who provided this information while undergoing torture, the terrorist attack goes off, in Los Angeles, not NYC. The information provided under torture was false, and it led law enforcement down the exactly wrong path. Would you as President feel personally responsible to the citizens of Los Angeles, because your decision to use torture on this suspect prevented you from uncovering exactly where it was actually happening, and led to the attack on Los Angeles?

First, small scott, you should always cite your source when you cut & paste, makes it more legal. Second, if waterboarding is not torture, then why did the U.S. participate in the prosecution of Japanese who used it on Allied troops following WWII; why have we convicted law enforcement officers in THIS country for waterboarding as recently as 1983? And, third, small scott, torture is NOT an effective means of interrogation . . . it has been PROVEN.

I've got an idea, since you don't believe that waterboarding is torture, small scott . . . you volunteer to show the world, which believes that it is, that it's not. You go let them waterboard you . . . yeah, that's the ticket . . . then you report back to us, okay?

Responding to the question "Can anyone tell me the difference between Gonzo and Mukasey?": For starters, Mukasey--at least in the past--had exhibited competance in the law; that is something that simply was beyond Gonzo. Kevin - It infuriates me too but from the opposite end of the spectrum. All Mukasey had to do was answer a simple question. "Do you consider waterboarding torture?" By not answering or "playing dumb" he created this spectacle. Then Dubya comes to his defense to make matters worse to explain that Mukasey has not been briefed on their interrogation (torture) methods. To answer the question yes or no doesn't really require a WH briefing. Even John McCain said it is torture. I guess Mukasey could not truthfully answer the question because if he told the committee it was torture, that means Bush would be a liar since he claims "we do not torture."
Although I think the waterboarding is a serious issue, I'm more troubled by his comment that there are certain laws that the President may not have to abide by. Business as usual in the Dubya WH.
Kevin - Are you not troubled by the Presidency throwing his usual tantrum? "If the Senate does not confirm Mukasey, I'll serve out the rest of term without an attorney general "(para-phrasing). And he's the leader of the free world.
And finally Kevin, if we torture everyone we consider a potential terrorist and continue to "accidentally" murder civilians, how does that make us any better than them?

Clinton was a lazy president - he preferred talking about tough issues to actually doing something about them. He avoided any action, no matter how justified, necessary, or right, that he thought might cost him a dip in the polls, while taking action only on issues that he thought would help him politically, or were just easier, like school uniforms and the V-chip.
Because of that, one could almost conclude Clinton was an inconsequential president, except for one major issue: terrorism. By treating it as a law enforcement issue, he essentially washed his hands of it and left it to the Justice Department to track down terrorists, a task for which the department was not prepared. As a result, Osama and his cohorts had free rein to kill Americans all over the world, until finally the country woke up to the war we were in on September 11, 2001. Clinton knew Osama was a threat, yet other than bombing empty buildings and deserted training camps, he did nothing. That would be difficult, you see, a distraction from his important work of pardoning rich fugitives and getting Hillary elected to the Senate.

You know Keith... sometimes I enjoy watching your show, but I was watching tonite when you interviewed Rear Admiral John D Hudson. I know there is a lot of controversey about waterboarding and wether or not it is torture, but to listen to him talk about torture like he has any clue to what he's talking about when it comes to subject... I guess because he USED to be "THE" Navy JAG so he must know everything... I mean he must have read about it in a memo. After all he was appointed by Congress. He was right that this has been happening for a long time, but in my 10 year military experience during 3 different conflicts I don't ever remember ANY JAG especially the BIG CHEESE anywhere near the front lines. They do work well in analysing intel... but that is about as far as it goes. Funny I don't remember anyone saying anything about this during the Kosovo conflict during the Clinton administration, but what would I know about the subject... stick with Sports... you seemed to be good at the subject.

Dear Mr. Obermann:

I praise your articulate description of the waterboarding and the political cowards who hide behind a thesaurus for protection. But a better "rendition" of the facts would show that torture is routinely used to soften up every prisoner by different individuals than those who actually interrogated them.

According to a Wall Street Journal article of summer about 3 years ago, torture was used to soften up all prisoners. That is, torture was used before questioning and before there was any refusal to talk to interrogators!

Indeed, the purpose was to give "plausible denial" to the questioner that there was no torture during questioning. Thus, universal torturing has been the on-going policy and the underlying premise that is used only to evoke a refused answer is far to limiting and actually minimizes the scope of this horror.

I also note that article found that money for "pre-torture" (my term) was funneled through the Dept of Agriculture in a budget item for contract translators. Perhaps translating begging for mercy into state secrets revealed.

Nice try Mr. Olbermann. That was a great piece of acting. Hopefully, you got the writers to write your little "tantrum" if you will, before they went on strike. The camera angles were particularly moving tonight.

You, as usual, are blowing this way out of proportion. Your suggestion to basically stop the government before "caving" in on the Mukasey nomination. I applaud Schumer (never thought I would say that) and Feinstein to have the political courage to approve the nomvination of an accomplished judge as attorney general.

I now believe that KSM and Al Qaeda are more important to you than the citizens of the United States. We don't live in this wonderland where there are no threats to our homeland, but we live in a world where a terrorist group is hell bent on killing us. They were hell bent before Iraq, and they remained determined.

No one condones the casual use of waterboarding, but in an extreme circumstance such as a senior member of Al qaeda is captured, and he has access to valuable information that will save American lives, then we have to use all means to gather that information.

Keith, you are as bad as a caller into a radio show this afternoon, saying that the Pakistan emergency is a dry run for the Bush presidency to declare martial law and maintain the presidency.

Mr. Olbermann, this is a desperate attempt to garner ratings and to rally your base. I am not buying it. We are not impeaching the president, nor is he going to jail.

Sooner or later the people of this nation will know the real reason of Sept. 11, 2001 and the march into Iraq. So far it has snuffed out the lives of 3,854 of are "All Volunteer Military and Citizen Soldiers" and caused 28,650 to be wounded just to build a "COLOSSAL EMBASY" and a Nation in the Middle East and to boot there isn't any nations that has aligned with the US effort.
Only my thoughts, Sept. 11, 2001 should have been prevented. All it would have taken is a direct call to all agencies after recieving the PDB of Jul. 10 and Aug. 6, 2001 to increase security. That would have save Patrick Fitgerald nearly three years of investigation into the Valarie Plame CIA that was to cover up the real reason that distroyed the WTC.
Keep digging Keith as sooner or later the real AMERICAN are going to want to know the truth. I'm a former Democrat that has switch to Independant and will not vote for anyone that will not take the USA out of the "WAR ZONE". Iraq was not involved in Sept. 11, 2001.

They didn't burst into the apartment, but I did have a 4:45 am visit from police officers who were preparing to knock the door down because I didn't get to it fast enough. When I opened the door, I had a gun about 6 inches from my nose, and that weapon was not lowered until I produced valid ID in my own residence. They were looking for a tenant who moved out of the apartment at least three years before they showed up. Nice investigative work, boys.

Those who try to justify torture tend to assume that the person being tortured is guilty of something. You cannot make that assumption. Law enforcement makes mistakes -- in reality, not just in theory.

If Nancy Pelosi is any indication of how the first woman in a position of leadership will prevail we may need to pause our exuberance on this landmark achievement for equal rights. Note Democrats now have majority of the house and Senate and can win over a few Republicans if they were “organized”.
- No oversight investigation into Halliburton no bid contracts.
- No investigation beyond Mr. Libby on CIA disclosure of Valerie Plame.
- No special prosecutor has been appointed to investigate to what extent the constitution was violated by the president and/or vice president.
- Make a congressional resolution defining torture and restore our good standing with the rest of the world regarding common article III of the Geneva Convention. Leaving Turkey out of it.
- Stall or stop funding for the war. If not, at least obtain some compromise for your own congressional dignity.
- Examine why the capture of Saddam Hussein was more important then capturing Osama Bin Laden.
- Make a powerful inspirational speech that all men and women are subject to our nations laws and our nation’s leaders are held to a higher standard than the rest.
- Call out the obvious. We are in a recession just because a financial analysis says it didn’t hit his penthouse apartment on Wall Street doesn’t mean the majority of Americans stagnant or declining wages should be ignored.
- Return the Justice department back to a semi non-partisan status.
- Waterboard Mukasey until he agrees that this is torture.
I can only hope that the next president Man or Woman will have the leadership to inspire the three branches of government to work together for the betterment of all Americans. Maybe if that is accomplished more people will begin to have faith in our Government.

To the torture loving trolls that linger here, consider this: Watch the 60 Minutes report online on "Curveball" the Iraqi "informant" who formed the basis for the WMD claims that took us to war. He lied about WMDs to get a German visa to leave Iraq. So to confirm his lies, we grabbed Ibn Sheikh Libi from Afganistan, renditioned him to Egypt and tortured him for three weeks until he "confessed" that Saddam had WMDs. In truth, all he knew was that if he confessed, they would stop torturing him. So our entire justification on going to war in Iraq was based on a lie that was confirmed by a tortured confession. So how did that work out for ya? The best definition I have heard to distinguish a liberal from a conservative is a liberal is willing to burn the flag to defend the constitution and the conservative is willing to burn the constitution to defend the flag. Without the constitution, the flag ain't worth spit. And speaking of lies, here is the biggest one George Bush told seven years ago: "I do solemnly swear that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my Ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States."

Sharon, don't you recognize the obvious self-contradiction in that argument? You claim to support free speech, but the minute someone uses that right to disagree with the government, you disagree apparently only on the principle that he's disagreeing with the government. If the only speech that's allowed is speech that agrees with the government, then that, by definition, is not free. So you sound like you are opposed to free speech.

Of course this argument (which is repeated almost verbatim all too often by many of the other 24% who haven't yet shaken off the effects of the kool-aid) also jumps to the utterly unfounded assumption that Keith and others who disagree with the government have no experience living in countries that aren't free. Your arguments need to be supported by facts, not just by stuff you imagine to be true.

The fact of the matter is, it's not what we as Americans have ever stood for--a direct violation of the Geneva Conventions, and should not be tolerated today. In other words, the man whom Olbermann believes "should have a statue in his honor in Washington right now" for making a liar of Bush about torture apparently thinks that, in principle, waterboarding is perfectly legal.

It's worth noting here that water seeks its own level.
