I think the problem goes much deeper and the water boarding issue is just one of many as of late that if considered by themselves would not be mountains but as you said mole hills. I truly think the underlying and larger issue here is the lack of trust this administration has created with many Americans. You may agree or disagree that is fine, but anything this administration says, did, or does in the future is not going to be supported by a large number of Americans. Why, because agree or not, this administration has damaged its creditability. You don't have to take my word for that. Just review the Presidents poll numbers. And I would bet, given a more honest and forthcoming administration that has maintains its creditability, more Americans would support such techniques if required to save American lives in the future. Like I said, the problem is not necessarily water boarding or Mukasey. The problem and the issue is GWB, this administration and their loss of creditability. And for those who support such techniques, if you think about it, GWB has been your worst enemy in regards many Americans now making what you refer to as mountains out of a mole hills.

Special Comment Tonight

I'd like to make one thing very, very clear: I am against torture not to spare the murderers in Al Qaeda (who should light themselves on fire and fall down a flight of stairs for all I care). I am against the torture of potentially innocent people. I'd like to think that if I, or someone I know, is at the wrong place at the wrong time, we wouldn't be kidnapped and tortured for only being guilty by circumstance.

And if we take the small step to accept waterboarding, what's going to stop us from sliding down the slippery slope? Malnutrition, sleep deprivation, 'simulated' suffocation, dismemberment, mutilation, electrocution...where does it end?

Will we let an Inquisition hold people in fear? Will the motto of the justice system change to, "A plea of innocence is guilty of wasting my time." What are we willing to do to innocent people so that this nation remains 'safe?'

Special Comment Tonight

As to David Molinero's posting, here is a slightly different take on the torture issue. I sincerely hope that this question is asked of the Republican nominee for President. His response will be enlightening.

Let us assume our intelligence agencies uncover the possibility of a major terrorist attack on NYC. In custody is a person who has knowledge of and is involved in the planning of this soon to be executed attack. The decision is made to torture this person, after he refuses to cooperate. Waterboarding, sodomy, whatever you can think of is inflicted, as a result of you the President authorizing this torture. The terrorist finally buckles and gives precise leads again conforming that NYC is the target of the attack and those leads potentially allow the attack to stop. While investigating those leads provided by this terrorist, who provided this information while undergoing torture, the terrorist attack goes off, in Los Angeles, not NYC. The information provided under torture was false, and it led law enforcement down the exactly wrong path. Would you as President feel personally responsible to the citizens of Los Angeles, because your decision to use torture on this suspect prevented you from uncovering exactly where it was actually happening, and led to the attack on Los Angeles?

Special Comment Tonight

I'm with Pam..my DVD is going during Countdown anyway. Make yourself clear CA. Sorry, but I was being interupted when I was writing that reply. My point is this. Much of what this administration argues now will not be accepted simply because they lack creditability. Ask most people that you come into contact with in your community. How many will say they truly trust GWB? That is the problem, not the water boarding issue on its own merit. Ask people if they would forgive or understand if it were found that George Washington had to water board a few Tories to get information that would save the lives of Americans during the revolution. By treating it as a law enforcement issue, he essentially washed his hands of it and left it to the Justice Department to track down terrorists, a task for which the department was not prepared. As a result, Osama and his cohorts had free rein to kill Americans all over the world, until finally the country woke up to the war we were in on September 11, 2001. Clinton knew Osama was a threat, yet other than bombing empty buildings and deserted training camps, he did nothing. That would be difficult, you see, a distraction from his important work of pardoning rich fugitives and getting Hillary elected to the Senate.
Think Clinton was responsible for the booming economy of the 1990s? Nope - the recover was underway before he even was elected. Think he erased the deficit? Wrong - gushing tax revenues did that, and a Republican Congress that imposed a slim veneer of fiscal discipline. Think he was serious about "reforming welfare as we know it?" Think again - he signed that bill only because he thought it was necessary for his reelection, and then he vowed to supporters that he'd fix it, though he never did. Think he was an innocent victim of a vast right-wing conspiracy? Hah - he brought all his troubles on himself and has no one else to blame. Think he was tough on crime? Hardly - he nominated a clueless Janet Reno attorney general, the Queen of the Bunny Planet. Think he helped bring peace to the Middle East? Not even close - he strengthened Arafat, whose refusal to accept generous concessions from Israel led to the current bloodshed. Think he cared about the people of Africa? Not so fast - he not only did nothing to stop the genocide in Rwanda, his administration actively opposed any UN effort to send more troops there

Special Comment Tonight

Krista Swisher, thanx for the civics lesson. Tomorrow is election day where I live too. I'd practically forgotten, but I won't be heading to the polls, cuz I mailed my ballot in last week.

Special Comment Tonight

I'll say it...conservatives can be hypocrites but at least they will admit it.

Clinton was a lazy president - he preferred talking about tough issues to actually doing something about them. He avoided any action, no matter how justified, necessary, or right, that he thought might cost him a dip in the polls, while taking action only on issues that he thought would help him politically, or were just easier, like school uniforms and the V-chip.
Because of that, one could almost conclude Clinton was an inconsequential president, except for one major issue: terrorism.
Special Comment Tonight

Sharon, NY, NY (Sent Monday, November 05, 2007 4:58 PM)

Great Idea Sharon, why don't we drop you in the nearest communist country, where any ideas you don't agree with can be immediately censored and/or erased completely so you don't have to be offended. I know there is a lot of controversey about waterboarding and wether or not it is torture, but to listen to him talk about torture like he has any clue to what he's talking about when it comes to subject... I guess because he USED to be "THE" Navy JAG so he must know everything... I mean he must have read about it in a memo. After all he was appointed by Congress. He was right that this has been happening for a long time, but in my 10 year military experience during 3 different conflicts I don't ever remember ANY JAG especially the BIG CHEESE anywhere near the front lines. In language which would make Shakespeare weep for it's sheer strength and flawless construction, he has once again hit the Bush Administration right in the teeth. "Verbal flatulence"? My god, that's priceless as well as appallingly apt. I do, however, begin to worry for my hero's personal safety. No one to date has so clearly articulated that the emperor not only has no clothes, but also that he has no brain, soul or ethics of any kind. Putting it so clearly that the entire nation has indeed been "waterboarded" by this President(and with something a good deal less aromatic than water) might not be in the interest of one's health. My favorite was the use of Scopolamine. The SS and the GPO, found that subjects were ready and willing to tell everything they knew, but they couldn't remember anything. The most top secret bits of info, were invariably held by subjects who would die before telling, and in fact did. Look no further than our own prisoners of war in Vietnam. After repeatedly having their arms and legs dislocated from the sockets, and then forcibly reinserted, they would eventually confess...to anything. Upon returning, they were treated as pariahs for shaming the USA, by Chickenhawks who whined about a hangnail from a bad manicure. Torture doesn't work and only a fool believes it does. The fact of the matter is, it's not what we as Americans have ever stood for--a direct violation of the Geneva Conventions, and should not be tolerated today.
