I know I am witnessing the demise of the integrity of this country in the eyes of the world and, tragically, in our own eyes. I feel so frustrated, angry and scared. What can I do, what can I do??

Americans have become immune to the dishonesty of politicians. Manipulation and deceit have become so commonplace that people just don't seem to care anymore. The popular view is that it is ok to tell a lie as long as you are not caught. If the means justify the ends, then telling a lie is ok. I am not a fan of William Bennett, but maybe he does have a good point when he describes the present- day situation as "the death of outrage".

Mr. Clinton now rivals Richard Nixon as the most dishonest man to ever occupy the White House. The only difference between the two is that Nixon was caught. Clinton has not been formally accused and brought to trial for his treasonous conduct, but that doesn't make his crimes any less serious.

Chinagate is a serious matter that deserves more attention that it has received. Forget the Monica Lewinsky debacle. This is the scandal that really matters.

So, Pakistan is under a dictator that threw away their Constitution, killed their Supreme Court, and are arresting anybody against their dictator. Did I mention that this was not the U.S.?

With your Special Comment, Keith, I am afraid you will become like those arrested in Pakistan, soon. I will too, because of my support for impeaching this administration. I am wondering, when will our nation become like theirs? I know it has already started here, but before next years election, what will happen? Will it actually be a real election this time?

I remember when it was extremely hard to get any info from this administration. Now whistleblowers are coming out of the woodwork. It reminds me of what Princess Leia said in Star Wars: A New Hope, before her planet was blown-up. "The more you tighten your grip Tarkin, the more star systems will slip through your fingers."

Thankyou, Keith, for going after Oprah! I know it was a risky thing to do, but I am glad that someone else noticed that she is all about "me". She ALWAYS has to appear on the cover of "O". I am wondering, when she cried for 30 mins, when she heard about the abuse, how many of the rooms in her home(and in which home) can she pace in 30 mins? Her main home in Santa Barbara was bought for 50 million! It is not like she has anybody else to share it with. How many schools can she build in Africa, with that mullah?

All this pondering has made me tired, and ill. Will Gore just run so that we will have some hope? (Great! I'm pondering again.) He will win! Hillary will not! We are just going to deal with another 4+ years of Shrub and Dick-tater's reign if a GOP candidate wins.

If anyone had told me seven years ago that one day the United States of America, to include government officials and civilians, would even be discussing "torture", to include what is or is not torture; or that a future president would make the statement, “The United States does not torture”, in defending his/her policies; I would have never believed it!!

George W. Bush has destroyed nearly everything this country was founded upon; however, he has not destroyed the hearts and souls of millions of Americans. I am constantly amazed by Keith Olberman! He is the bravest man I know! To actually go on air and say all these things out loud--for others to hear! I wholeheartly agree with all that he said in tonight's Special Comment about waterboarding and the Bush administration's use of this form of torture (and God only knows what other kinds) and their denial of it! My only hope is that Bush/Cheney and the others involved in this will someday be prosecuted for their crimes.
I've posted things at work (articles from the NY TIMES mainly)about the Bush administration's abuse of power that should really worry people--but no one seems to want to get involved or even believe it. I'm just so glad that there is SOMEONE who understands how serious this is and is brave enough to speak out! Thank you Keith, from all of us out here that "get" what your talking about!! Good news, MSNBC is working on a new program starring non other than Rosie O'Donnell. She would be after KO. KO is quoted as saying the following:

"Mr. Olbermann acknowledged that for MSNBC’s nighttime lineup to ultimately work, viewers needed to be able to follow at least some common themes from one show to another. He likened himself and his fellow hosts, collectively, to the menu of a hamburger restaurant with several variations of the same dish.

“If you go into a burger place, and you go in there for the fish, you might want the fish occasionally but it’s probably a mistake,” he said. “Could you be utterly different politically and succeed in this format? You’d basically be throwing your audience away.”

The Case for George (Clooney).

On several previous occasions, I’ve tried to convince Countdown to balance Britney, Lindsey, and Paris with Ewan, Clive, and George. To be sure, Countdown has been a pretty good sport by allowing me to carp on this point. I’m sure Countdown knows I’m only kidding. Countdown fills the screen pretty well himself.

But I thought I made a good case for Ewan (political figure from a galaxy far, far away) and Clive (political pirate from the 16th Century). Although Countdown evidently did not agree with me, I still think there are some things worth trying, even though you know you won’t succeed. Now, if we could only convince Congress to adopt my philosophy.

Anyway, undeterred by my earlier abject failures, I started working out my case for Clooney. But if galaxies far, far away don’t cut it, it seemed unlikely that a desolate fantasy world like Syriana would cut it, either. Desperate for inspiration, I forced myself to see George’s new movie. (Oh, the sacrifices I make for the Newshole.) (: (: (: (: (:

Turns out there wasn’t much there, either, although it could fit in, perversely, with Countdown’s current “green” theme. But, there WAS a lot of George Clooney on the screen.

And then it came to me. The case for George Clooney is – George Clooney.

Now, unlike George Bush, I’m not delusional. I know this plan won’t work either. But like George Bush, I don’t really care anymore. I just wanted to complete my mission.

Mission accomplished. (About as effectively as Mr. Bush accomplished his.) (But with 50 percent less torture, unless you count the self-inflected variety.)

Bush must feel a great deal of kinship with these two nuclear-powered dictators who feel the only way to “save democracy ” is to destroy liberties and the rule of law and to disappear one’s enemies (if not literally, then certainly figuratively, right Mr. Levin?). And who but Bush and Musharaff could, through their own idiotic and extreme actions, make Islamists and Talibanis seem reasonable and even sympathetic. Just as only Nixon could go to China and Clinton could reform welfare; only Bush could bring Al Qaeda to power in Iraq and Musharraf, if he keeps following Bush’s model, may actually turn Pakistan into an unstable theocracy.

And I never thought I’d say this in response to a non-Court TV program, but hooray for lawyers! Between your first guest, from the JAG, calling torture the last refuge of the lazy, the stupid and the pseudo-powerful and the fact that you showed it was lawyers who were literally on the front lines of the Pakistani revolt, well, I’ve never been prouder to be a member of the bar.

They could cover the girls, the school, the actual horrible offenses instead they cover Oprah because she is rich and famous. She also traveled to South Africa to speak with every girl at the school. She had the dorms restaffed and retrained and worked with authourities to see those responsible were prosecuted. The Special Comment was outstanding-one of Keith's best. He seems to be inferring that Mukasey's nomination means Bush, Cheney, et.al., will never be prosecuted because concrete evidence of waterboarding will not likely be uncovered until after Bush has left office. I think prosecution is always possible...it may just be against a former president and vice president as opposed to a sitting president and vice president.

I remember watching C-SPAN some years back, when people who were in congress during the passing of The War Powers Act, confessed that the act was unconstitutional. Their reasons for voting for it was, "As much as I love the Constitution, I hate Nixon even more."

Reportedly, only three of the worst terrorist had been water-boarded, and no one in the past three years; and for some, that's too many. Though I will not cry one tear for them, not even a fake tear.

I don't care to come to an "understanding" with these monsters who would blow-up the schools with-out remorse, I want them defeated by the fastest, most efficient means possible. And yes, they are monsters, evil and twisted in heart and mind.

It seems to me, that as much as some who post here, as much as you may dislike these mad dogs who have stated their goal is to enslave the world with their twisted understandings of Islam, you Hate Bush even more. That to me seems to be short-sighted, and dangerous.

As a teacher, and more importantly, a parent, I was alarmed when Oprah announced that the parents of students at her African school would have limited access to their OWN children. My first reaction was how could this icon, who so often relates to her audiences tales of her own childhood sexual abuse, limit parental access and be so egotistical in believing she could be mother/father/mentor from miles away on another continent? Answer: SHE COULD NOT!

Steve Turner, I realize this is probably too late but if you haven't voted yet today I'd be grateful if you'd consider casting a vote for my old friend Michael Douglas, he's running for Council at Large. I had a Hunter S. Thompson moment in Cedar Falls back in the mid 70's and still keep in contact with a few folks. I had the pleasure of spending a weekend with either the "Brotherhood" or the "Sons of Silence". It was kind of a friend of a friend deal, but we got invited out to the clubhouse, an old small farmhouse really. I walked in and the guys were tearing a transmission apart in the kitchen sink. No food anywhere, no furniture save for a ratty couch with a poster of Peter Fonda above it. Beautiful choppers parked everywhere and all the beer a young man could drink (they charged me 50 cents a can, I paid it), good times in Cedar Falls, good times.

Sadly, Senator Feinstein is and always has been a republican. I lived with the horrors of her as mayor of San Francisco!!

She only assumed that role after the assassination of the late and wonderful Mayor George Moscone. Her career took off from there. She was always viewed in a negative light in San Francisco.

What hurts me more is that George Moscone was a wonderful man with a brilliant political career ahead of him; yet one crazed man and one bullet ended his life and he was taken from us.

The thought that Feinstein is where she is because of this is sometimes too painful to bear.

At least 852 U.S. military personnel have died in Iraq so far this year — the highest annual toll since the war began in March 2003, according to AP figures. Some 850 troops died in 2004.
The grim milestone passed despite a sharp drop in U.S. and Iraqi deaths here in recent months, after a 30,000-strong U.S. force buildup.

I just wanted to thank you for bringing some relief to me at the end of my day. I work in a facility that plays the Faux News Channel on all four televisions in our break room every day, all day. I work second shift and if not for my smoking habit, would have to endure Bill O'Reilly's "No Spine Zone" during my dinner break. I tried to quit smoking a while back, but found I'd rather riddle my body with carcinogens than sit in the break room and contaminate my brain with the rants and raves of a former tabloid "news anchor" turned .. well, tabloid "news anchor."

Your show helps me to see the light after hearing the darkness as I pass through the halls at work. I appreciated the commentary Monday evening (11-05-07) and hope many others did as well.

Regarding what will Keith do once Bush is out of Office. My bet is that he will keep an eye on the new administration whether Dem or Republican and use his same ripping criticism if the new administration even remotely begins to act like the Bush administration, or acts like they intend to pursue a different agenda from that desired by the American people. I don't recall the date, but when the Dems voted to approve further funding for this Iraq surge Keith ripped the Dems in a pretty good commentary as well.

DG - The only way Oprah limited access to the girls at the school was that parents had to come during visiting hours and not during class hours which they had been doing and students were forbidden from using thier cell phones in class. There was also security which limited visitors to family members on a list. Of course, this has all been worked through, because unlike our president, Oprah takes responsiblilty and works through problems. I don't understand the hate.

Keith's special comment last night has catapulted him up to hero status in my book, along with another patriot hero that we have in Denver. Joyce Meskis. I don't know how much national coverage this received but it was covered here quite extensively. The short version, after the Patriot Act was signed the feds wanted Joyce, the ownwer and proprietor of a wonderful bookstore called The Tattered Cover (in a new location these days) to supply them with a list of titles that customers had purchased! After she reminded the police that would violate the first amendment they come back with a warrant! She won, but it cost her a lot of time and money. But, like torture, it should never even of had to happen. Excederin headache # 43 and his slimy ilk are doing everything they can to frighten you into giving up your rights, rights that have been paid for with our fellow countrymen's blood and lives. If people like Keith and Joyce don't stand up and say "You're wrong", we will be in that place that Pakistan is today. Congress refuses to do their job, so we need people like Keith and Joyce, now more than ever. This is our responsibilty as Americans. I believe Pam Bignardi is correct in a previous post today, about how long it will take "we the people" to undo the damage Excederin headache # 43 has wrought, probably longer than we want..."sigh"....and Pam, thanx for the quotes, very apropos. Amber (2:33 PM Post): I agree that using torture is wrong, but if one were going to use a technique to get what might be reliable information water boarding is the absolute worse technique. Water boarding defeats it own purpose (to get reliable information). It defeats its purpose because it is seen by the victim (as you have stated) as a life-threatening act. Those who undergo water boarding or dipping, which is a similar technique, feel at the time they are in fact going to drown, to die. It matters not if they are telling the truth as they feel their suffering will soon be over anyway. Techniques that will get you more reliable information however are those used where the victim knows the act is not life threatening, but rather are so painful that the thought of your captor keeping you alive as long as they please under such conditions is too much to bear. And knowing that you will not be killed but rather under constant pain induces one to be a little more truthful. The victim also knows that such acts will intensify if the captor finds out you were not telling the truth. Such tenchinques work even better when complimented with false promises to the victim of total relief and/or even freedom. The constant mental battle of pain versus possible permanent relief or even freedom will get people talking much quicker and with much more reliable information then water boarding. The victim sees an end to their life in water boarding. The victim sees no end to their life but yet no end to their pain using other more effective non-life threatening techniques of torture.

Hey all bloggers, if you're so inclined check out Fronline on PBS tonight. Its a documentary by Stephen Grey entitled "Extrordinary Rendition". People that were "picked up" flown to other countries and detained in prisons called "black sites" for months, then tortured including waterboarding and having their genitals beaten, thrown back in a cell and then let go without ever being told why they were interrogated are going to tell their stories. If our government can do this now, what's next?

I still keep playing over and over again in my head an interview where Donald Trump (never liked him) was asked, “Do you think O J is the most hated man in the country?” His response, “No, I believe that title goes to President Bush!!”

I still don’t care for him, but I do agree with him; imagine being more reviled than a man who slaughtered the mother of his children and an innocent man and got away with it? Kevin, you are incorrect in your assumption that Mukasey could not respond. Mukasey was simply asked if waterboarding was torture . . . since it is established law (the link I posted yesterday affirmed that cases have been tried to a conviction in THIS country, in fact, in my home state) that waterboarding IS torture, he would simply be affirming established law. It would not prejudice any future cases. His refusal to answer was more that adequate reason to oppose his appointment.

As for a better choice . . . not sure. I have a dear friend who is a U.S. District Court judge in Dallas . . . he was a tremendous D.A. and is a very fair, very CONSERVATIVE (in the true sense of the term, not the bastardization of the term) prosecutor. That's the kind of person we need . . . fair and one who adheres to the Constitution.

How do you explain that China which had a limited space program in 1990 was able to put a man in space prior to the end of the decade, and is now prepareing a manned mission to the moon this decade.

CA- I'm a little stunned by you. Are you saying thumb screws give accurate information or electrifying genetalia? Torture doesn't work because people in pain will say anything they think you want to hear. It also confirms thier belief that you are evil. It assumes the torturee actually knows the answer to the question you are asking. It's lazy and cowardly. Using torture gives credit to "terrorists" as being somehow more than the mortal men they are. Giving up the moral high groud to these thugs, says to the world and the Islamofacists, whoever they are, that they are a bigger threat to America than the Soviet Union during the cold war. Sure the tactics that do work are not as sexy. Threats, building report and trickery don't make for interesting TV but they do actually get real information.

Kevin, I wanted to add to my post above that the Attorney General doesn't decide what laws he should or shouldn't enforce . . . his job is simply to enforce the law. Since waterboarding has already been declared a crime in this country and has been adjudicated as such . . . he really has no choice but to enforce it. That's why his dodge was disingenuous. As Attorney General, he is not charged with interpreting the laws, simply enforcing it. It's up to the courts to interpret.

Let me follow up. I am strongly opposed to our government approving or being involved in torture. It sends the very message you have stated. But as for me, and a personal circumstance, I am not the government. And as I stated, if it came down to an attempt to secure information to save the life of my sons I would use whatever means necessary to do so. There is truth to the argument that persons undergoing torture will say whatever they think you want to hear. But there are also techniques and processes that can be used to make sure the information is more reliable. And most likely, to be completely honest, I would probably in the end kill the terrorist as well. Afterwards, if you so desired, I would give myself up to await whatever sentence you felt was appropriate for my behavior.

In any case jen’il, don’t be stunned. I tend to support and will defend most positions taken by the majority of bloggers here. But there are issues and personal beliefs I have that will at times be in direct opposition. It is my personal neutral ground as well as some positions that may even lean to the right from time to time. But I will always respect the opinions and positions of the others here no matter my beliefs. As you see, when it comes to my sons, I would break from the norm to protect their health and well-being. Such a personal position does not have to be that of our government, but it is my position. And if that makes me a thug just like the terrorists, so be it. Dear Mr. Olberman, you are right about torture and this was a very powerful and needed commentary. Kudos for saying it, BUT I have a few questions for you:

1. When are you going to hold Democrats accountable for not impeaching these criminals and for continuing to fund and support and illegal war? By aiding and abetting, they are war criminals too !

2. When are you going to open your eyes and recognize the many, many. many experts, insiders, witnesses, whistleblowers who have come forward on 9/11, and the reams of physical evidence, as well as video and audio evidence, implicating these very same war criminals in the 9/11 attacks (as a pretext to set up these illegal wars and the Orwellian police state that you rail against) and the subsequent and very obvious cover up of the facts - by both parties. When will you stop covering for them and demand a new 9/11 investigation?

You know they lied about WMDs. You know they are lying about al Qaeda and "looking for Osama", about "spreading democracy", the SPP/ NAU and virtually everything else including the real state of the dollar and the US economy, which threatens to destroy the USA forever, with a whole lot of calateral damage for the rest of the world.

Facing 9/11 facts and evidence, more than anything else, will stop this evil regime and get to the root of the problem in America and in this world.

Until you do that, you have no more credibility than the other coverup artists: Limbaugh, O'Reilly, Hannity, Beck and Maher et al who are making fortunes shilling for criminals, and allowing the USA to be destroyed from within.

70% + of Americans have a lot of righteous anger against this current administration, not because the one's in power are Republicans, but because they are liars who are ignoring and altering not only our Constitution, but every international law they can thumb their noses at. You cannot tell me that if Clinton had signed Executive Orders at the rate of Dubya, appointing cronies in recess to bypass Congressional approval, pardoning someone who lied for his administration; that the Neocons wouldn't have been screaming from every rafter.

Just this week, after waiting weeks for its release, I received the update version (the original was released in 2004) of "Bush on the Couch" by Justin A Frank, MD. Dr. Frank is a pyschoanalyst who done a study of Bush. It's a depressing, disturbing and frightening read, but, I'd recommend it to those of you on the blog who either work in the psych/social fields, or are just interested in it. I'd recommend that you read it, C A, since you seem very astute in your observations of the public persona of Bush. I would agree that, with over a year to go, a lot of very scary things could happen to our country with a nut at the helm.

Kevin in NJ . . . a dear friend returned from Iraq recently. He confirmed what I already knew . . . our troops are not fighting, per se. He said that the majority of their time is spent patrolling neighborhoods, acting as policemen and trying to avoid being blown up by the IEDs that are EVERYWHERE and to avoid being caught in the crossfire between Iraqis. That's why the Marines are being withdrawn from Iraq and sent to Afghanistan, where there is REAL warfare going on. He said that people shot at them, but it was simply because they got between the two groups of WARRING Iraqis. We have no war in Iraq and haven't for a very long time. Our troops are being killed and maimed simply because they are THERE. The reason that the numbers have decreased is not so much the result of the surge, but because of the ethnic cleansing which has been going on between the Iraqis. The Shi'a have run the Sunni out of their neighborhoods, or killed them and vice versa. The "surge" was simply another game of wack-a-mole. Hit them here and they pop up over there.

I have spent less time analyzing Cheney and frankly would find it quite frightening to even consider looking deeper into that man's character and motives. I will say it is apparent that Cheney is a very bitter man and has been for quite some time. As to what drove him into this abyss of always seeing the worst in people rather than the good I cannot say. I have some ideas but will not state them here. In any case, take Cheney's bitterness and Bush's need to control everything he touches like a child who has not yet learned to share his/her toys with playmates, and you have a very dangerous combination. Minus the few checks and balances that rise up to bite these guys in the rear now and then, I assure you, there would be no social order in their thinking processes. Their 0 tolerance attitude towards any form of opposition both here at home and around the world would be ten times ten worse then it is now. The emergency of removing them from office is a true emergency and hopefully this will occur before the few checks and balances that are left are completely destroyed. This is what the Dems do not understand. Every time they give in to Bush, no matter how much noise they make beforehand, it removes one more brick from that wall that up to now has kept these guys in check. If those last few bricks are removed before these guys leave office, well, say your prayers.

First off, I am glad your friend came back safely. You may be partially right about why the casualties have decreased, but one of the other reasons for the decrease is that we are having an impact on the foreign infiltration, eliminating Al Qaeda and other foreign fighters from Iraq. Most of that is a result of the surge. I tend to agree that we are starting to see evidence that we can start a slow withdrawal of troops from Iraq. Our usefulness in the middle of the fights between the various sects of Iraq is diminished. Way back when I said that if we are going to being withdrawal of troops, it has to be done cautiously and not hastily. I still believe that is true. We will always have a presence in Iraq, more as a peacekeeping force. Some of the evidence does suggest, that while Iraqis have a long way to go to have a peaceful country, progress is being made, and the US should be able to start a slow withdrawal. We don't need to announce it to the world though.

This little piece shows how worthless torture is when used for interrogation purposes. This cable, which was reported over two years ago and got NO press, showed exactly how the government obtained some of its FALSE information which it used to take our country to war with a country which had NOTHING to do with attacking us on 9/11 . . . yep, torture. Seems like when you bury somebody alive . . . they start making crap up that they think you want to hear. Imagine that!

(I might add that our government KNEW this was fake information before we invaded Iraq. Powell still used it in his U.N. speech.)

A lot of what you are posting above is simply propaganda . . . you are aware of that right? The majority of it was occurring BEFORE the surge. For instance, in al Anbar . . . that was occurring LONG before the surge began . . . the people of al Anbar got sick of the crap and ran out the VERY small number of foreign fighters who where there. The only reason that the numbers are falling is because most areas have been "ethnically" cleansed, either by bombing or evacuation.

Our troops need to be home NOW . . . there is no reason for another American soldier or Marine to die or be maimed unnecessarily in this totally unnecessary military action and occupation.

Oh, please. It's not as if the US hasn't sponsored torture in the past. A form of waterboarding was used against the anti-imperialist (yes, anti-American) forces in the Philippines after the Spanish-American War, and was reportedly important in our killing of General Aguinaldo. (It might also be noted that this has become an embarrassing moment in American history, and there probably aren't 100,000 people in the US who could identify General Aguinaldo.)

But people should remember who Dan Mitrione was; Costa-Garvas made a movie about his capture and execution. And while the US tried to claim that he hadn't done anything to deserve it, a number of sources have proved that he spent his time in Latin America training the local constabularies in the fine points of torture.

What's most disturbing is that the fact that the US promotes torture is news to anyone.
