Wow. That is what I am talking about, Keith! After a Special Comment like that, how could you ever go back to reporting on celebrity gossip? Your talent, anger, and elloquence should ALWAYS be directed towards issues of tremendous importance, such as our current "debate" on torture.

For the entire length of the Special Comment, it was like I was listening to a genuinely independent, honest, non-corporate controlled voice.

Just as there was a "North" and a "South" during the Civil War, I believe we are 2 nations, 2 distinct countries tonight. There is the country of those who were wonderfully described by a couple of tonight's guests on COUNTDOWN and Keith Olbermann in his "Special Comment" as "...lazy, stupid, and pseudo-tough...", "...pathetic, ideologically bankrupt, and incompotent,..." and apologists of "...verbal flatulence...". Do these traits sound like anyone we know around here of the troll-like persuasion? And, worse yet, there are Democratic members of the Senate Judiciary Committee, namely Senators Schumer and Feinstein, who are ready to capitulate AGAIN to this ilk in an irrational fear of being portrayed as being "soft on terror" if Mr. Mukasey's nomination is derailed.

You conveniently left out the fact tonight that Levin reported after his experience that waterboarding 'might be' considered torture and illegal IF it were not carefully supervised and controlled. This is not the black/white statement you made it out to be tonight. You seem to want any tactic that causes mental distress but no immediate pain or permanent physical damage to be defined as 'torture'. Under your definition of torture, it would be illegal to tell an enemy combatant that they were going to 'rot in prison for the rest of their lives' because this would be too much of a psychological shock for them to bear. War is hell, Keithy. Is waterboarding torture? Even Levin did not say 'yes, under any circumstance.' Could it be torture under some circumstances? Of course. Is it drastic? Certainly. Is it terrifying? Probably. Does it inflict physical pain or permanent physical damage? No. Neither does sleep deprivation. Therefore, there are circumstances under which these practices do not constitute 'torture' as defined by Webster's or Geneva conventions. Therefore, prospective Attorneys General should not make blanket statements about the legality or illegality of the practice prior to their confirmation. Especially when Congress itself will not take a stance.

You are the kind of scum who is going to insure that we lose this war against terror. He holds a Masters degree in Public Policy from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government.

And as firmly as I believe that George W. Bush is an Evil, Monopolistic Fascist, I'm still waiting for
Science to figure out a way to build a new line of Democratic leaders who aren't just small-time versions of their Republican peers.

I recall with deep depression this dumbest of Presidential candidates accusing his "Democrat" opponent of fuzzy math and don't remember the opponent going on the attack and questioning George's math skills or any other skills he might have.

I'm still waiting..........................

Ultimately, if we are to continue as a country with a two or more party system, then at least one of them has to be honorable and deserving of our trust and respect.

Otherwise, can you say fascism? Ann Coulter, Karl Rove, Rush Limbaugh, Bill O'Reilly, Ari Fleischer, Dana Perrino, etc. are actually mentoring.

Bravo!
At last someone has said so eloquently what has needed to be said about the criminals who have taken over the presidency of this country. It is no surprise that Bush and his band of "handlers" and toadies have acted in this way, the surprise is that Congress has caved in so readily and so frequently even when the American public has time and time again showed them that it wants a change from the theocratic and fascist regime that has been created by this latter-day dictator. When I was a young boy I was always taught "scratch a bully,find a coward" and here we have not one but two cowards at the head of the current administration. One of which when it was his turn to offer his military service to his country, ran and hid in the Texas Air National Guard.(Complete military records NOT available upon asking!) and another who got at least FIVE deferments so he wouldn't have to bring his sorry behind to VietNam. These two cajones-less blowhards are quite willing to send young,brave,patriotic americans (all of which they are not) to die in a war they ramped up to make money for themselves and/or others like themselves. Personally, it would not surprise me if this coward would attempt to delay his departure from his presidency by claiming a martiial law situation because the barbarians are at the gate. Sort of what Giulliani explored when he was about to leave Gracie Mansion. Look for a ramping up of rhetoric against the "terrorist threat" right before he gets to the end of his term. Well shame on him for creating a false war and false reports of danger,shame on Congress for being too afraid to stop him,shame on the media for agreeing to help with the the selling of the war and and abdicating its responsibility to the public(Elmer Davis is spinning in his grave) shame on his parents for not teaching him common values and plain human decency, and lastly, shame on ourselves if we do not pursue a criminal investigation against this pretender to the Oval Office who never was and never will be a true American President.

You used to be so funny when you did sports. Don't know what happened or why you got sucked into the polarized political process. It's not really news since it is commentary and the reality most of the diatribes are merely Bush hating outbursts. From the comments on the diatribes the few people watching are Bush hating sycophants. I have withdrawn from the political process since I can't see the world in black or white terms which is required now. I like most live in a world of shades of gray, and can't relate to most involved anymore. You have become passionate and are eloquent but are so obviously fixated on spewing vitriole on one on person you obviously hate that you certainly cannot be trusted to be objective.

You are indirectly related to my disdain for all those in power or trying to be. I just happened to be surfing and settled on CSPAN for a moment just in time to hear Harry Reid quote you on the floor of the Senate. That was the final straw. I hope that once we get past Bush that you will join a 12 step recovery group and go back to sports where you are so good. The reality is the country is great enough to survive a bad president. I am not sure we can survive the hate filled polarized groups that refuse to try to work together though. Oh well we had a good run.

Funny how the Administration, and specifically the dear departed Mister Gonzales, crafted a definition of torture that would actually allow for waterboarding--no organ failure, no blood--no foul?

It's not only torture, it's terrorism, because it puts the person in terror of his well-being, up to and including the threat of death. Which means the war against terror is over, and the soldiers can all pack up and go home, safe in the knowledge that the United States lost the war by embracing terror. By using it to try to extract dubious information, or just getting a little revenge for 9/11, or just for the hell of it. The point is, we traded off whatever moral superiority we claimed to have at Nuremberg; we stopped being the "shining city on a hill" that Reagan invoked so often; we're no better than al-Qaeda. And somebody better start proclaiming that message--just to see if anybody's still listening.

Oh, and by the way, Keith, I forgot to mention in my previous post that I am from Kent, OH, the home of Kent State University (my alma mater, class of '79). I grew up in this town and have spent 48 of my 50 years living there, so I was a teenager when May 4th happened. So I know all too well what abuse of government can eventually lead to.

Condoning torture is abuse of our government, period, end of story. We not only set a poor example to other countries who once saw us as a beacon of hope and liberty, but we also put our own service men and women around the world in danger in a time of war.

Condoning torture also dishonors those who wear the uniform of this country, but what would BushCo know? Most of them are draft dodgers who refused to serve during VietNam because they "had other priorities". Yeah. Right. Your Special Comments last night (11/05/2007) on "Waterboarding and
Torture" was right on target!! It disturbs me greatly that there isn't
more outrage or comments in the media. When I write to my senators from
NC (Dole and Burr) about this topic requesting an answer, I get no
response, I guess I will have to give them my response when they run
for reelection. However, it may be too late, by then, for our country.

I've been spending time at a friend's a couple times every day - one of her dogs has metastatic cancer - she needs support and he needs a mid-day pill while she's at work. Last night we watched the Special Comment together. She's not a viewer and her jaw dropped. "He's pissed", she remarked.

I told her that I was, too considering what's going on and asked her why she wasn't. Click, she got it. She just hasn't been able to acknowledge it or find words for it.

Keep those Special Comments coming - people are listening.

There is so much anger at this government. Why can't (or won't) the Democrats cash in on this? If they can't stand up to an idiot with a 24% approval rating, who CAN they stand up to?

On a different note, I was happy to see both my Senators (Feingold and Kohl) vote against Mukasey. Unfortunately, there are still so-called Democrats who continue to enable the horrors this administration. Shame on them.
