Any teenager who committed the most innocuous trangression was " suddenly run over by a speeding bus ". Why is it that conservatives always move faster in reverse? Nature or nurture? Could it be that we're too hard on them because they're genetically predestined to linear thinking? Is conservatism the alzheimers of the new millenium? Somehow, Billo giving anyone advice reminds me of an autistic savant with a gift for math teaching someone carpentry.

What happened at Senator Clinton's Rochester, NH headquarters was too scary; I'm glad it ended with no one getting hurt. I hope all candidates beef up security a bit at their headquarters. Regarding Bernard Kerik, the former Police Commissioner of NYC under Giuliani, has already pled guilty to two ethics violations and ordered to pay a $221,000 fine; in addition, he was indicted for conspiracy, mail fraud, wire fraud and lying to the IRS last month -- well, I’d really tell him to shut up if I were Rudy!! Then again, poor Rudy doesn’t seem to have any friends that haven’t been in trouble, the apple doesn’t fall far from “Rudy’s Tree”!!

Between Giuliani’s corruption and Romney’s flip-flopping, no wonder former Governor Mike Huckabee’s pulled ahead in the Iowa polls!! This is going to be fun to watch --Rudy’s going down and Romney can cancel his plans to redecorate the White House!!

Ciao to all! I FINALLY have the internet in my home-YAY! No more schelping it over to the base to get my free hook up!

I've seen the ads for Countdown on AFN, but I haven't seen the show yet. I know that they get it on AFN Pacific, but we also get ads for that region. It also might have to do with the fact that I'm now homeschooling my four boys, hence I don't get to watch much t.v. these days.

I hope all is well with you folks. I'm reading some back posts to catch myself up. Again, not getting a whole lot of news except for whatever AFN is offering up, I'm sort of behind the times on things-except for this God awful war.

On that note, my nephew came home last month and reunited with his wife and young son (the son that was born a month before he left in September of 2006). My bro and sil are doing as well as can be expected.

Pam the country is speaking and do not want a President with alot of baggage. That is why both Rudy, Mitt, and Hillary are dropping in the polls. They don't want the old political machines. Hillary's coverups, bobbing and weaving, and just plain avoidance of answering questions has worn on the American public.

I don't know whether Huckabee has the horsepower ($) to win the rep nomination, but it certainly would be an interesting contrast if it was Huckabee vs. Obama. I see on this site, that anti Huckabee rants have started. If this ends up being about the issues. You can compare and contrast the candidates, understand their respective positions, and make an intelligent decision. I would also say that this race would not be as negative as previous elections.

#5 - I'm still hung up on media coverage of Giuliani's Qatar business dealings vs. the tryst fund. I'll concede that both stories need attention. Arguably, the difference in significance has to do with their impact going forward. The tryst fund is something that's already happened; the business interests are ongoing. Oddly, though, it's the tryst fund story that keeps generating new details.

#4 - Even militarily, the surge is not the whole ball game. Had Murtha not bothered to mention the political failures, it would still be wrong to take his remarks as supportive of the war as a whole.

#3 - I'm pretty sure the first time Countdown played the Rove interview clip that my WHAT?! violated a local noise ordinance. Rove did say he was going to write about the Democrats' rush to war in a book. I expect it will be in the fantasy section. If he keeps changing his story, he should consider the "choose your own adventure" format.

#2 - Evel Knievel. That, kids, is entertainment.

#1 - The segment was educational. I learned that, even though they call it a coffee table, you're not supposed to spit your coffee on it.

Saw Sunday Night Football (Steelers & Bengals) and of course Olbermann did his stint giving the scores of the afternoon games and running down some plays.

The problem is when an obvious left-wingnut liberal continually slams Bush, O'Reilly, Beck and others like them on his own show (Countdown), a large part of the country has NO INTEREST WHATSOEVER in seeing him smackdown the scores on NBC's Sunday Night Game.

It's like seeing Billo doing the game. Many people wouldn't like it and would voice their opinion just like me and others do when we see KO doing it.

I know Olbermann is part of NBC television's two-bit network attack, by far the lowest rated (behind ABC and CBS), with his MSNBC cable gaffe.

KO is better suited for the Sportcenter type stuff instead of trying to immitate O'Reilly, Hannity, Limbaugh and Beck, and trying it left-handed at that.

Keep the game of football out of politics and controversial talk show hosts out of NFL games.
Period.

Regarding Huckbee, perhaps it is all there in the eyes, but the anti-Christ? Don't think scripture indicates that the anti-Christ will come from Arkansas. Besides, although a matter of interpretation, near the end, there is little mention in scripture of the US playing any kind of major role. Perhaps Bush has laid the foundation and will now be followed by future self-serving inadequate leaders whose lack of leadership will bring about the demise of the US as a world power before the beginning of the end. Note how the recent polls in Iowa have the candidates in a close race (on both sides). Iowans are just a reflection of what the rest of the country feels. Don't know who they want as President because there is no one they really do want. They are trying to once again decide between the lesser of two, three, four, five, etc evils.

Perhaps if we all begin posting comments that relate to the thread, with the exception of a "late breaking" story, etc., the moderators will take us more seriously also!! Just my two cents, but I have seen this blog deteriorate and I believe it has happened, in part, as a result of the foolishness, attacks and outright stupidity posted by some!!

I don’t wish to offend anyone but I am going to state my opinion with regards to the blog of late!! I don't really care what color Keith's eyes are; I care about discussing relevant political topics that are critical to our country's future. Sadly, what was once an incredibly brilliant blog, with just enough levity, has become consumed with off the wall topics, hate-filled rants and bigoted comments that have absolutely nothing to do with "TODAY", let alone the topic of the thread!!

As I stated, my goal is not to offend anyone; however, I think many here, myself included, need to take this blog more seriously!! I want to say THANK YOU to the people that consistently have –you know who you are!! This blog is not the place to discuss fairy tales or Harry Potter. I’m sure there are blogs for that. All, for some reason, "The Moderator" (Larry's Mom?) refuses to post my response to Larry's rather derogatory comments towards veterans who disagree with his POV. They've got my email address, and my response to Larry has been ignored/rejected for several days now despite several postings. Anyone else suffering from this kind of treatment or is it just veterans "The Moderator" doesn't like?

Regarding Lou Dobbs, he’s a bigot who has target one border, the Mexican border. He has targeted one race, the Mexican race. There are millions of undocumented workers in this country from other parts of the world. Lou Dobbs has not only singled out the Mexican population, he has exploited them for personal financial gain!! He’s a disgrace in my opinion!!

Frankly, and pardon if I offend anyone, but I find not only zealots but all orgainzed religion scary. There is not one Bill that does not to a degree try and tell people how to live. And many if not most use man-made rules to do so. Spirituality on the other hand simply means that one acknowledges there is something greater then themselves and that once having learned this that person does not require man made rules or organized religion to lead a harmonious and peaceful life. There is not necessarily a name to that greater being or entity. It could be a God or some other source that provides the person with that sense of peace and serenity. But whatever one calls it (if one even applies a name to it and some do not) a truly spiritual person is one who will try to practice humility and love towards others, to share the same, and to be an example of that which is greater then themselves. I mean, what else is needed among us all? It is easy to spot those who do not have spirituality, even among those who might be firmly committed to their religion.

Clinton had NOTHING to do with this program, it was a program instituted by the County of San Diego designed to prevent welfare fraud (as a direct response to the Reagan era crackdown on welfare fraud) and the people who were the "victims" of warrantless inspections signed documents acknowledging that their homes could be inspected without warrants . . . they waived their rights in order to obtain welfare funds. Just because the case occurred during Clinton's presidency doesn't mean he had anything to do with it.

Look up San Diego County's "Project 100%."

If you are voting for the Republican party because you are against abortion or against homosexuality, then you are exactly the kind of ignorant voter the Republican Party likes.

When your good paying job is outsourced and your pension fund has declared bankruptcy and social security and medicare have been completely gutted, maybe just maybe you'll understand that being "pro-life" and "anti-gay" are very stupid reasons to vote Republican.

Any one who votes Republican in the next election -- who is not making more than $200k/year -- is a fool. The Republican party has set out to systematically destroy the middle class and weaken the agencies that protect regular folks from the abuses of big business. It started with Saint Ronald Reagan and his union busting and continues to this day.

It's going to take a long time for the middle class to recover, IF they ever can. The backers of the Republican Party are laughing at you as they merrily count all their money.

I believe she'll bounce back; and NO, I DO NOT support her, I am just looking at things realistically. I will vote for her if she gets the democratic nomination though; she's better than any GOP candidate running!!

Gennifer Flowers and Monica Lewinsky were consensual affairs, Paula Jones was allegedly sexually harrassed but the case was settled out of court with no admission of wrongdoing, and the Kathleeen Willey allegations were untrue. Where are the "many others" you refer to? Bill Clinton may not be a saint but when it comes to leading the country I'll take him any day of the week and twice on Sunday over Bush or any of the GOP bozos making their pathetic attempts to succeed him.

Whether it's Hillary or Barack or John Edwards, you'd better get used to it Larry. A Democrat will be in the White House starting in January 2009. To tell you the truth, I haven't heard any such thing taking place. Having given up scripture for the most part shortly after graduating from high school (except when necessary to pluck a good line for a funeral or a wedding or a blog), I know I haven’t read it anywhere near as closely as you probably have, C A. But I do suspect a few republicans think the LAST president who was also a governor from Arkansas was (and is) the anti-Christ. At least judging from their unwillingness to let go of their hatred for him (transferred now to his wife).

All kidding aside, I don’t know what it is about Huckabee that sets my teeth on edge. I suppose it’s the fear of the zealot I mentioned earlier, and that Bill from Rochester picked up on in his post (11:42 AM). Your observation about Mr. Bush and his followers being the little mini anti-Christ representatives is uncannily close to what really I think, C A. Satan was, of course, God’s closest lieutenant until the fall from grace. One hopes that God would have chosen a lieutenant who was smarter than to make the anti-Christ look like the anti-Christ, until the very last moment.

I’m hopelessly confused about the “lesser of” the many evils I see out there right now, but as for your knowing about unconditional love, I never doubted it, C A.

Well, Dubya's at it again. The bill to adjust the Alternative Minimum Tax is getting jerked around because he doesn't want to let Congress make it revenue neutral. Like the deficit needs to be any bigger. The IRS says if it doesn't get passed and signed soon that won't have time to adjust their computer software and tax filing season will not start until February. I actually hope it doesn't get done at all. That way those 5 million people who have to pay AMT this year can vote against the Republicans next year and we could have a filibuster-proof Senate. You are wasting your blog time. Countdown is not going to investigate sex or morality issues with the same intensity against those on the left as they will those on the right. After all this time and knowing the political dogma of Countdown and Keith I would have thought you had learned this by now. For example, I have learned that it would be a waste of your blog as well to ask those conservative TV and Radio pundits to investigate and report sex scandals and other moraility issues regarding those on the right as fervently as they will against those on the left. Quit beating your head against the wall Larry. That is the way it is. If moraility was to be a big deciding factor in these races one might have a better arguement for fair and balanced reporting of the same. But the fact is Larry people don't care. Voters have become less sensitive to this stuff. Take Rudy for example or that famous bathroom Senator. Without the specifics these guy are no Knights in Shining Armor Larry, yet Rudy leads in some of the republican primary polls and the Senator remains in office. Go figure. And I thought the right was supposed to have ownership to high morality. At least that's what they and you say. This stuff occurs on both sides Larry. Let's just recognize that and move on.

I’m just wishful thinking, Bill. I know Mr. Gore is not going to get into the race. A long time ago I actually posted something where I expressed the opinion, which I still hold, that he shouldn’t run.

Alternatively I have three or four candidates I can support, all of whom would do nicely, as far as I’m concerned. But I’m afraid that, by the time they get to the primary in my state, it’ll be pretty much moot. That’s what discourages me right now, and has made this primary race a little less interesting for me than it should have been.

I do find your point about spirituality, although actually directed to C A, to be quite interesting. I agree that not all “religious” people are “spiritual.” In fact, in my experience, I would venture to say that not that many religious people are spiritual. To me, what holds any society together is shared values, which might equate to spirituality, and might not. In any event, like you, I mostly fear zealots and those who try to dictate what others think and how they live.

Zealots of any stripe, as you so rightly say.

Religions now have become institutions, developed their own inertias and agendas which have pretty much nothing to do with the welfare of their adherents. As institutions, the hierarchy determines what dogma is adopted to advance the well-being of the organization. They require the obedience of their followers and their money. No human enterprise can survive without wealth and influence which to preachers of eternal damnation or paradise figured out a long time ago. Spirituality, while admirable, doesn't have the marketability of fire and brimstone or 72 virgins in heaven. But I could be wrong.

Nope, Scary Larry, I though we covered this previously. 'phony' means false (like Faux Noise, Compassionate Conservative, Bush's military service, and Larry's sense of honor and duty). I, sir (and I use the term loosely), served my country honorably for about 17 years, with 6 months in Saudi/Iraq during the war, 7 years in Germany when terrorists were blowing stuff up, etc. My DD 214 (real veterans know what that is...ask one, Larry) didn't come out of a vending machine. (Oh, in case you were wondering why I didn't do 20 (and Larry is, he's looking for a way to slam me instead of my points. I'd use the term 'ad hominem', but he'd just think I called him 'gay')...when I moved to Iowa in 2001 I tried to join the Guard here. They wouldn't take me...as I'm a 50% service-connected disabled vet (life member of DAV (and VFW), too). That's why.)
I didn't go to Iowa State (nor UIowa, nor UNI or any of our fine Regents schools, for that matter...and as none of 'em have a hockey team, they're irrelevant to me) so slamming a school I've never been to is...well, par for the course for you, it seems.
Even the VMI wankers I served with picked on the Spitadel...I'm not at all surprised you're proud to be an alum of that 'fine institution' (emphasis on 'institution').
I was never a grunt, either. Army, yes...in signal corps, quartermaster corps, chemical, and intel. I was offered a position with the White House Communications Agency, but I chose Germany instead...I wanted to be where the action was, not where the brass was.

Be it far from me to correct anyone here on the facts of an issue. junebug does well at that as does Pam and many others here, including yorself. I will admit the vast majority of my comments are opinion and based on personal beliefs. Some folks get tired of seeing these types of comments and that I can understand. Because if we were in any kind of debate where one had to present only facts to prove their position I would lose. So you do not need me to look out for your comments, thoughts and opinions. They are yours and that makes them just as right as they may be wrong (as with mine), but they are ours. As junebug states facts do have their rightful place, but I have found that with most bloggers, and people, their internal emotional personal belief system is what guides and drives their lives. One can quote facts all day to those on the extremes of the right or the left but to no avail. It would be similar to presenting facts to those who are devouted to their belief in God that there is no God. It will not work. Appealing to their emotions and giving to those who have no specific internal belief system something to believe in is what influences people. So in reality how does one correct anothers belief system. Can't be done and I certainly wouldn't try. Perhaps influencing others by giving them something to believe in, or something better to believe in, would be more up my isle. But I can't see the need to look over your shoulder.

Thanks for the comments. You and I have seen a great deal on this blog and have met a great number of fine people. All of them (because they do post here and do express their thoughts) do believe in something. My concern would be for those we do not see on blogs and who do not otherwise express themselves because they lack something to believe in. I think the key is that first a person believe in themselves and then to understand that they are only a part of something greater. Yes, I have seen the growth you have shown on here Pam and you are to be commended for it. But dont ever lose that spirit that has always been part of you and that most bloggers in here also have. It is what makes all of you special. Might be heck living on a secluded island with you guys from time to time (I'll keep that in mind with just the Dog, my thatched roofed hut and hammock, some good books and a cool island drink now and then), but it certainly would not be boring.

Some of the commercial time for every program is reserved for the channel distributing it. In your case, either the cable company or the satellite dish company have sold commercial time to Faux News on Countdown's show. I didn't see those commercials, so it was local to your environment. It's one of the things that I miss from my old C-Band satellite dish -- we would see the nationally sold commercials but the "local" commercials were missing (a dark gray screen would appear). There were no local political ads. It was great.
