It's the hypocrisy, Dave. If Senator Larry "I'm not gay" Craig were a Democrat, and came out the closet, like Barney Frank, then it would be no big deal.

However, after all the anti gay speeches and votes, Senator "wide-stance" deserves all the ridicule that's coming his way.

I sincerely doubt that he'll be re-elected for two reasons:
* his "fellow" Republicans are afraid to work with him -- fearing that his homosexuality may rub off.
* his constituents have been well indoctrinated to be anti-gay and won't vote for the sinner.

It's a helluva party that you've got there Dave, it's so exclusive, does it really let any one except straight white males in?

Steven Hadley of the NSC reportedly said today that the Iran NIE report proves that our sanctions have been effective............

The US sanctions have been so effective that not only they stopped the Iranian program. They actually made the sanctions work backwards all the way to 2003 ...... years before the sanctions were imposed.

These sanctions are obviously very effective tools of the NSC and should be studied by all interested in national security, foreign affairs and international diplomacy.

Maybe this sort of diplomacy could be used to go back and stop the Iraq war before it began in 2003 also. That would solve our funding problems.

I didn't care for the story on Larry Craig. The doll and the comment by Dana Millbank was out of line. I don't care if he is gay or not. It seems to me the real story is the hipocrasy that exists. A lot of people went after Bill Clinton when what they were doing was just as bad. I like your show but this one seemed way out of line. I don't think you need to share Karl Rove's nickname with the public. In additon, it seems that the comment on splaining was inappropriate. Your show is at its best when you take on the big boys and the war in Iraq. The real story is that U.S soldiers are dying in Iraq and this seems to be after thought by a lot of people. I don't mind the light stuff but keep going after the big stories.

To David Molinero--Ordinarily, I would agree with you, that the only thing that matters is whether or not the people of his state are satisfied with his service, as long as he hasn't broken any laws.
But, here's the thing, see....I've said this at least twice before on this blog, and I can't name any names or my submission won't be posted, but for a politician to be gay and in the closet, is incompatible with public service. The reason for that is that it leaves that politician subject to blackmail. This fate has already befallen one top tier Democratic candidate for president, but we will never hear about it. I think everyone knows who I'm talking about.

In re Hillary's attack on Barak's kindergarten record -- what the @#$% was that campaign thinking...? What sacrificial volunteer/intern will be compelled to fall on his/her sword over this "unauthorized release" that they're calling a "joke" on the morning shows. Classic Clinton shoot-yourself-in-the-foot nonsense that will be forgiven by supporters, sort of, in a week or two but never really forgotten by anyone. Hillary needs to shake the air of inevitability about her election to get beyond her core supporters, and that means losing Iowa and a few other low-number primaries. I don't think stupid attacks on Barak are the way to do it, however.

Thank you, Countdown, for pointing up just how repetitious is el presidente estupido's daily mantra against the "time wasting" congress. As KO said a while back, "Your hypocrisy is so vast, sir..." but I suspect that Bush, like so too many "conservatives," lacks the capacity to recognize their own hypocrisy.

And then there's Turd-blossom, who appears to be going thru media withdrawal and needs to get his face out there in a vain attempt to get the buzz back. How long before he's partying with Paris and Britney (or Larry Craig) and becomes a regular on Keeping Tabs?

It is one thing to criticize Congress and to say they are not performing their jobs and another to act as a leader and to lead this country including Congress in the right direction. Bush is not a leader. Yes, Congress has its duties and responsibilities and should act like adults and try and pass good legisltion, but the President has the responsibility to provide the kind of leadership that can inspire the American people and Congress. How on earth any President with an approval rating so low from the American people expects Congress to do his bidding is beyond me. Must be a mental or character flaw.

If you are a society of laws, you better be very careful about what laws you pass. The Republicans have painted themselves into a philosphical corner which from which there is no escape. I personally will not vote for a politician who does one of several things. First, emphasize religion because of the thoughtless intolerance and bigotry most religions engender. Second, " Law and Order" candidates because they are pandering to fear and people generally don't make their best decisions when they are fearful. Third, singling out one group as a pariah that must be dealt with. I realize that I am a minority but I am content that this is a proper way to elect a representative and to conduct my life.

I tend to agree with you David. I recall another person who was and has been slammed by the opposition for his sexual activties. His name is Bill Clinton. I could care less who he was screwing, even if in the oval office, as long as he represented the people well which it appears he did with the poll numbers he enjoyed when leaving office.

On the other hand regarding both Craig and Clinton or any other elected government official who particpates in similar activities. If you are Gay say so. If you like men say so. If you like young female interns say so. If you like both men and women say so. If you love your wife but feel the need to mess around now and again say so. The issue is not the sexual activities or preferences as much it is not being honest about your activities when and if they are made public. Dishonesty is a character flaw and does give the people of Idaho and the US some reason to consider just how well representation can be expected in a person who fails to be honest. Personally, I also have an issue with anyone who messes around on their spouse but it seems the general public is more forgiving today for such acts so I'll leave that criticism out of the equation. But my own thoughts are that if you cannot be faithful to your spouse then end the relationship and move on in another direction and allow your spouse to move on in another direction rather then trying to live a life of deceit.

Although I'm not sure I would put it exactly like you have I will agree that if the Dem base stays away from the polls the Dems are in trouble. However, the same could apply to the Republican base if they do not get a nominee that meets their agenda. They too are in a state of confusion among their candidates as to who will best represent their agenda. The confusion does not lie just on the Dem side but also on the Republican side. If we could just eliminate or at least down play the desires of the extremes on both sides perhaps we could end up with a responsible, mature and compromising leader. But as you say if the Dem base stays home it could lead to an outcome that appears to the be a Republican (in your words) victory. But as I see it if the wrong candidate is elected (whether Dem or Republican) rather then a victory for the Dems or the Republicans the result will be a defeat for the American people. For the serious division in this country that Bush and Company have created that has resulted in an extreme dislike (even hatred) for the same by those on the extreme left will be maintained rather then substituted for a more workable and positive coalition between the American people.

I just sat through Dubya's press conference. The usual self-serving whiny stuff. He really got me with his ingenuous response to all questions about the revelation that Iran actually suspended its nuclear program four years ago; sort of like, well, yeah, they stopped THEN, but what's to stop them from starting it again yesterday? And they probably did, if we are to believe the way all his people spin the news.

As for his scolding of Congress over the work he says they need to do, allegedly to take care of the troops but in fact to make him happy, not one word of his diatribe from yesterday's Rose Garden shindig did he change. Dates me badly, I guess, but IS IT DUBYA OR IS IT MEMOREX?

No doubt this is too blatant an insult to be allowed up, but he reminds me of no one so much as an elderly spinster cousin of mine, oldest and only girl of a family of four, fond of bossing her brothers around: she would frequently lament, "Everything would be so much better if they would just mind me when I tell them what to do!" Sounds like she and Dubya had a lot in common; sadly, she now has Alzheimer's and can no longer boss anyone around, while he still has--how many days is it, Carol from NJ?--to try to boss Congress and the American people around. What's annoying, though, is the bulk of the information had to be known at least to the majority of the inner circle as well as Bush for a few months now and he still made the World War III comment back in October. Another black eye for American credibility in the international community thanks to this ignorant little martinet who talks the talk but can't walk the walk. I wonder if Bush can even spell integrity.

Bush said in his first speach on Iran shown last night that Iran "Wanted" to have Nuke Weapons.

Just because Iran "Shelved" their Nuke Weapon Program doesn't mean that they no longer want to have Nukes. Just that they put a hold on it, until they feel that it's ok to proceed.

After hearing that the N.I.E. says that they've shelved their program, they just might think that they could start back up quitely as it would take time for the N.I.E. to be revised.

I just can't count Bush saying that Iran "Wants" to have Nuke Weapons as a Lie. Or "Shelving" as anything more then merely a delay.

Folks, you are being played for fools. Karl Rove utters a few lines of nonsense, and it becomes "news" for days and days. Don't fall into this trap. All the left / right, democratic / republican, liberal / conservative garbage is meant to distract you. It's a staged event, a rigged fight as real as any pro-wrestling event.

People like Karl Rove will say/do something ridiculous to cause a media circus, thereby taking the focus off real issues. Wake up! His absurd comments deserve no attention! NONE! Yet here we are, wasting our time and energy.

So what happens? In a news world dominated by false left/right paradigms and celebrity gossip, real investigations take a back seat in pursuit of the latest trash. In this case, researching the criminality of Rudy Giuliani gets swept aside for the week to complain about a fat-faced, blabbering fool?

Give me a break! Wake up my friends! Certain issues such as 9/11, and a CRIMINAL of that very day now running for president(!), should NEVER be bumped to express "outrage" about Karl Rove's remarks!

Every momment that a newspaper or television show focuses on this filth is a victory for the liers, the crooks, and the deceivers who don't want you to check Rudy's criminal ties to 9/11, or anything else that truly matters.

Bush saying the NIE doesn't change anything sounds alot to me like during the aftermath of the Iraq invasion. They started by saying there was "no doubt" Iraq had WMDs but then when they couldn't find them they justified the invasion first by saying they had WMD related programs and when that also turned out to be a load. Well stated James and quite a bit of truth to what you state. We have to get beyond allowing the strategies of others like Rove or the news organizations to control our futures and what we think (and when) and learn to act rather the react. I am reminded of companies and those training workshops on Crises Management. I had always thought that if people were to act instead of react perhaps there would be no need for crises management training. I do follow your thinking regarding our comments here. Maybe that is why we as the American people cannot achieve the kind of leadership in our political officials that we desire. Instead of acting on these issues we react to the same. And reacting means the sled is already a quarter or halfway down the hill. Perhaps if we reallly emphasized and concentrated our efforts as to who gets on that sled and when we could avoid many of the pitfalls that come with having to put out so mamny fires that we can't control what will happen in the next minute, hour, day, week. But maybe that is not how we are made. If we were designed to act rather then react who in their right mind would have allowed GWB to act as head sled driver. It also may be the reason why most comments concern what has been reported as being wrong with someone or something rather than how we can make them right from this day forward. Boy, the ole mind is just spinning away here. Hope I didn't confuse anyone.

Mr. Clinton was impeached for lying about sex in a CIVIL LAWSUIT . . . do you KNOW how rare perjury charges are in a civil lawsuit? I do . . . I've been in civil litigation for almost 23 years. I've seen ONE and it was so blatant there was no choice. Most DAs will laugh you out of their office if an attorney requests that perjury charges be filed in a civil case.

Civil litigation by its nature requires that there be two or more sides or positions to every case. I've read literally thousands of depositions over the years and can guarantee you that I've never read a single one in which at least one of the deponents didn't lie. The impeachment of Bill Clinton was a travesty of the law . . . and an embarrassment for our country. Because of that travesty, our Congress is reluctant to propose articles of impeachment against the current administration which HAS committed crimes which meet the test of "high crimes and misdemeanors."

For the record, since my defense of the law will cause some uniformed folks to call me an ignorant liberal, Clinton supporter, etc., I never voted for Bill Clinton, did not support him and do not support his wife. I just felt, as did many in the legal profession, that the impeachment of Bill Clinton was one of the lowest points in the history of this country . . . not for what Clinton did or was accused of doing, but from the joke that a very partisan Congress, intent on removing him, made of our Constitution and the laws of this country.

They broke several laws . . . they are just as culpable as the criminal they were chasing. Carol . . . here is a link to the jury verdict in the subject case. Also, I might remind folks that attorneys do not hand down verdicts or judgments. Only a judge or a jury has that responsibility. To blame Sutton for a jury's verdict is a bit misplaced. Sutton simply presented the evidence . . . the jury handed down the verdict . . . a unanimous one, I might add.

If you plug in the case no. or the appeal no. and style into Google, you can find other information of all kinds on this case, but my recommendation is to read the court filings. News reports and articles are most likely jaded or incorrect.

Regarding the border patrol agents, Chaucer had a good point with "If Gold Rust, What Then Will Iron Do?" While their past service and such may be mitigating circumstance/evidence, their crime is abuse of the power we gave them to keep us safe.
I'm pro-cop, and anti-criminal. That being said, when it comes right down to it, I have more respect and understanding for honest criminals than dishonest cops.

DesertStormVet: As the neighbor of 'criminals' , not unlike that drug carrying SOB that those agents shot in the back (read: major drug dealing cartel that has their car shot up within feet from my sleeping chilrens bedroom), he is not honest-he is a scum from Mexico that helps the scum in our country corrupt and hurt our children.

I suppose for him he's just lucky that he was able to get his a$$ up and testify with immunity. BTW, I'm not some neocon nut job (actually a very left progressive Navy veteran), just a Mom born and raised in SoCal that has seen what our agents are up against. I'm still out when it comes to those two, but to say that his crimes were less, well, I disagree whole heartedly!

Actual Samuel, I DO have perspective on this situation. I also said that I'm still out on these two agents, and in no way did I defend them. However, as you will note, this lovely 'gentlemen' has recovered nicely and has once again been arrested for smuggling. Ain't that grand?

BTW, I hate guns, but I also hate drugs equally. I also hate the fact that people in certain positions take advantage of that position, howver, when it comes to drug dealers, I have no pity for them whatsoever.

Maybe when this guy gets out of jail again, he'll manage to get 75lbs across the border and into the lungs of children everywhere.

Oh, Carol . . . not ill-informed. I'm just really leery of reports regarding cases which have been tried to a unanimous jury verdict as being big mistakes by the prosecutor. These border patrol officers broke the law (several of them). It doesn't matter that they broke the laws in the apprehension of another criminal (who, by the way, was running BACK across the border) . . . they broke the laws, that makes them just as criminal as the criminal they were chasing.

I hear where you're coming from, and agree with much of what you say. I don't think kids should be doing drugs...whether it be meth or pot, tobacco or alcohol, caffeine or cough syrup. Adults, however, don't need a nanny-state to watch over our every breath and heartbeat. The war on drugs is a failure in large part because of the absurdity of prohibition. Yesterday was Repeal Day - the anniversary of the ratification of the 21st Amendment. The failed 'noble experiment' did far more damage to our society and families than did the alcohol they were trying to ban. The prohibition against pot and other relatively harmless drugs is much the same, with much the same result. Bottom line, just say no, kids...but learn responsibly what, how, when, and where it's safe and sane to imbibe in your favorite entheogen or neuron-shifter.
Still, bad cops piss me off far more than standard run-of-the-mill criminals...if gold rust, what shall poor iron do?
