Before we allow Bush/Cheney to lead us into another 'elective' war over what Iran may or may not be thinking, planning or doing...

Wouldn't it make more sense for our government to be paying attention to the two volatile countries (North Korea and Pakistan) that already have nukes and aren't that stable? Shouldn't we be concentrating on rebuilding the intelligence network for monitoring nuclear proliferation that Bush/Cheney destroyed with the outing of covert CIA agent Valerie Plame.

The fact that Bush/Cheney are concentrating on Iran, leads me to the inevitable conclusion that "It's about the OIL", again.

I always get confused by the messages on this site. On one hand some people say "give them hell Keith" or "we must fight this administration" then they end their messages with "PEACE". There is no "PEACE" in war until the end of the fight. You must be filled with hate, anger, emotion and other things or you will lose every time. I don't think many here know what it means to fight. I don't think many here have really fought except with other family members or their neighbors and little things like that but not for real....for life. Simple words annunciated loudly or with anger is not a fight. The taking up of arms and using them with extreme terminal malice is the real deal not from a behind a computer screen or TV camera. Fortunately few of us living in a heated or air conditioned house filled with all of the food and comforts we can afford will ever experience a real fight just the one they have chosen to create in our own mind.

I actually read the report...no where in it could the following passage be gleaned actual or insinuated "briefed on the "fact" that Iran abandoned its pursuit of this imminent threat four years ago -- who never bothered to mention it to his boss". No where in the report are the "facts" printed. The report simply presents a picture of what the reporters thinks they see given the information collected from the 16 different agency's. In the report one can find "policy" statements. This FACT alone should make the document suspect. The "coulds" the "may haves" the usual wording is found many times in this document. Do your home work if a "search for the truth" is your intent otherwise your words are as hollow as your credibility and simply tumble down the steep embankment and softly land at the bottom of the seeping pile of regurgitated rhetoric.

I am a Republican, since Ronald Reagan, who is sick of what I'm seeing in this seemingly
self serving administration.

You nailed it right in the button regarding Bush and Cheney's Machiavelian
tendencies. I hope someone is looking at some more Machiavelian possibilities.

We started a wars on 'Terror', with Afghanistan and Iraq.
I was just wondering, did anyone in the administration profit from this war or pre-knowledge of it
i.e. through investment companies making investments, esp before the war, in defense contractors
and/or other companies like ex. Hallibuton that would most certainly profit from a war,.

Also, look at our oil company biased energy policy. Who, besides the people in the
White House with oil industry backgrounds, stood and still stand to make loads
of money by sticking to oil as our predominant energy resource, and using whatever means
it takes, including war, to maintain our dependence on this lucrative, to them, form of energy?

I hope someone is looking at some of these coincidences and looking for and gathering evidence
on these possibilities so we can dethrone these 'crooks' and hopefully avoid, at least by them,
future self serving international conflicts and wars, not to mention harm caused
to us on our own soil.

I missed the Special Comment tonight (just got home) but Keith (and evidently Dan Froomkin of the Post) are doing important work in looking at the language Bush uses. One of BushCo's major tools has been a sort of rolling version of the Big Lie. They set out to manipulate public opinion by selling the country some whopper (e.g., we can't wait until the "smoking gun" is a "mushroom cloud"). They never actually say, out loud: We have evidence that Iraq/Iran/whoever is going to initiate an unprovoked nuclear strike on an American city so we better hit them first, because that is clearly nonsense. Neither of these countries has nuclear weapons, let along the capacity to carry out a strike on the U.S. But note that we aren't attacking any other unstable, undemocratic countries who do have nukes (Pakistan comes to mind) and who are in fact harboring the very fella who attacked New York and Washington six years ago (Pakistan again). And I can very well remember air raid drills in the early 60s in which we trooped down to the school basement and put our hands over our heads to protect ourselves from Soviet nuclear missiles. And somehow, over the 60 years since the end of WWII to the start of the disaster in Iraq, we managed to co-exist with sworn enemies without resorting to unprovoked war or even worse, nuclear attack.

The rhetoric Keith exposed tonight suggests, to me at least, that these lunatics have every intention of attacking Iran; the NIE suggests that there are forces in intelligence and perhaps other agencies who are opposing BushCo on this next imperial adventure. But there's a lot of money left in the treasury to loot, and the time to get it-- to get companies in place in the Middle East to do business, and to get control of more oil--is running out. There's less than a year. And my guess would be that the shift in rhetoric is just another wave of the Big Lie. Having convinced their base that war in Iran is necessary and profitable, they have every reason to believe that the mainstream media will pay no attention to how their rationale is changing. Because even when they are called out and revealed as the shameless liars and criminals that they are, nothing happens.

OK Keith, War crimes trial, for not telling the American public that good ol Iran has suspended their nuclear program. You can wipe the white froth from your mouth now. We will not be going to war with Iran. That is not going to happen. Should we continue to keep pressure on Iran, yes.

If you actually read more than the 30 second sound bite that everyone is referring to, you would see that this intelligence estimate still has a concern about Iran, just not as great. The following quotes show that.

"We do not know whether it currently intends to develop nuclear weapons."
"Iran probably would be technically capable of producing enough HEU (highly enriched uranium) for a weapon sometime during the 2010-2015 time frame."

"We do not have sufficient intelligence to judge confidently whether Tehran is willing to maintain the halt of its nuclear weapons program indefinitely…."

So while the issue isn't as grave as originally thought, Iran has in the past acted like a rogue nation. We need to be cautious with them. Pres A. is a whack job, and I know he doesn't have alot of power, but his rhetoric continues to concern me. It will be a happy day when he is gone from power. He is a destabilizing force in the Middle East.

I am not defending Bush's subtle wordsmithing on the issue of Iran. I, for one, think he has worn out his welcome at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, so I think he is just going ride out the remaining 12 months with some saber rattling, but nothing militarily will be done with Iran. President Bush, I am asking you to tone down your rhetoric with Iran a notch or two, but remain cautious in Iran.

Is it because the Hispanics come from a poorer Nation? Open the borders, become a partner with Mexico and in time the "illegal" issue will disappear. I suppose the other option is to round up thousands of illegal Hispanics (and their American born children who are US Citizens) and ship them back to Mexico. Good luck.

This may sound like an off-the-message-thread comment, but I can tie it all together: Does anyone remember a 1930's film called "The Grand Illusion"? It starred Erich von Stroheim and was set during The Great War. Von Stroheim is the commandant of a POW camp and he befriends (or rather, becomes acquainted with) an aristocratic French prisoner, Captain De Boleldieu. Von Stroheim's character opines to the Captain about the glories of war, and how they, as aristocrats, are modern knights errant - true warriors who fight for honor and glory. Not like the riff-raff grunts who only do what they're told. Von Stroheim reacts with baffled rage when de Boledieu sacrifices himself to allow a front-line grunt to escape the prison camp.

Does it occur to you, fellow bloggers, that the President and His Men have seen "The Grand Illusion" and missed the point entirely? The "Illusion" of course, is that there is anything glorious about war. But the current administration seems lost in some sort of grandiose delusion that, because we CAN make war, we SHOULD make war, and this makes us a great and honorable nation, regardless of the reason (or lack thereof) for conflict.

Actually the immigration solution is not to open the borders, but to expand the borders, as in let the Mexican people decide their own fate, legally. Of the 6 Mexican states that border the US, a population of approximately 18.7 million, let them know we would be receptive to them applying for US territorial status. Let the Mexican people decide for themselves politically. People who are in the US illegally would be encouraged to return to the territorial applicate states to help foster their political change. And then as in the days of old, when a territory has met the required conditions for statehood, the Congress can vote and create a new state(s). The people living in the newly created states naturally would be given US citizenship. This too would encourage the illegal population to return to the applicate states to prove residency, for however long it was required of them.

Is it just me or is the white house leaking the unrelated cia story regarding missing interview tapes. The whitehouse loves to blame the CIA regardless how many (16)agencies agree No doubt the next presidential spin will be blaming faulty intelligense of the NIA on the CIA. Or questioning the cia's competence. The whitehouse will try to show incompetence on the cia'a behalf with the unrelated matter of missing interrogation tapes. Then when someone states that the CIA was not the only authors of the NIA, The whitehouse will call it collusion between the security agencies. Which is really a joke because. For all the talk of sharing information between various law enforcement agencies if anything homeland security has done anything but get agencies to cooperate.

So David, to use a loose analogy, the law should not investigate criminals because if they are found guilty of doing something, because a jury might find them guilty, but they might be let off by a technicality, the truth should not come out? This Administration is criminal. They have committed impeachable crimes. The absolute truth of what this Administration has been doing, ALL of it, must come out, whether anyone gets punished or not. No more hiding skeletons in the closet, no more sweeping lies under the rug, no more spinning the truth and acting fast and loose with the American people. I for one am sick of the whole mess, but I want to hear it ALL. I will make up my own mind about what is said. But seeing as how what is known so far, and has been proven so far, being passive about it just doesn't cut it. I too am disgusted. The Democratic Congress for having no spine. I was hoping by now they would have grown some.

There are only two shows I watch and one of them is you, KO. The day you go off the air I will shut my TV off and never turn it on again.
